Indeed, an excellent, but underappreciated artist. Although the music is
much different, I feel like there is a certain similarity between his
musical vision and that of (my absolute favorite) Sun Ra in terms of
that whole far-off-ness and paradoxically familiar one-of-a-kind-ness,

Sun Ra would be my second favorite jazz artist; the two left the rest of the jazz scene in the dust. Interestingly enough, we seem to enjoy entirely separate eras of Ra. My favorites are Strange Strings and Atlantis, and in general I've mainly listened to the 1960's New York albums. Meanwhile, you generally seem to favor the later 70's recordings. Either way, if there was ever an artist that deserved to be considered his own genre, it was Sun Ra.
