Last nights choices: Can – Monster Movie Caravan – If I Could Do It All Over Again… Fuchsia – s/t Soft Machine – Third Asgard - Tradition Et Renouveau Steve Roach - Arc of Passion - Did you grab the free download of this one when it was offered, Sam? It's a great one, I just had a discounted CD of it arrive the other day. Oh, and I've managed to rearrange my Roach tower, so now I'll be able to get a few more years out of it if Projekt keeps issuing his CD's in those slimline cardboard sleeves!

I really enjoyed reading your excellent 5-star review of Edge of Time yesterday, Michael!  I need to write one of it, too (for me, it's also a 5-star album), I've been out of the review-writting business for a longer while now. And great choices there! That's my favorite work from Caravan there, actually. Also, I still need to finally listen to that Fuchsia album. It's that time of the year when I enjoy folk and psychedelia very much, it's always that way from around late January to April. |

Jean Sibelius - Symphonies No. 2 & 4
Can - Future Days - I haven't listened to much Can, but I can see why Jaki is so dearly missed; his work on here is very inspired, to say the absolute very least. In all, this was a very calming, meditative album to get the weekend started! I'll have to listen to these guys more often. Pink Floyd - Ummagumma - Well, if Careful With That Axe, Eugene doesn't wake you up, I don't know what will! Yep, this period in Pink Floyd's career was no doubt the most interesting. Certainly a lot more so than the soporific Dark Side days. This stuff is awesome. Experimental enough that you can appreciate it on an intellectual level, but trippy enough that you can feel good losing brain cells to it. Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick - Every once in a while I'll revisit albums that I don't really care for to see if there's anything I missed the last time around. This is one that I've trying on and off for a few years now. I've gotta say, if Tull was an instrumental outfit, this would actually be a pretty darn good piece of work. The passages where they actually let loose and rock out instead of confining themselves to Ian Anderson's boring nonny-nonny Englishness are actually pretty darn awesome. I'm not too concerned, though; there were a whole bunch of bands putting out bluesy prog around the same era that had far more expressive singers. Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts - What the heck; I thought I hated this album! Maybe after listening to the "plain Jane" vanilla prog of Jethro Dull I just consider it a breath of fresh air to hear something that pushes some kind of boundaries!
Nope, I've been much too hard on this album in the past. It's not an easy one to get into, and I'm still nowhere near considering it a masterpiece, but it definitely has a dimension all its own in terms of sound, which is something that I'm increasingly becoming appreciative of. Oh yeah, that and the chaotic sections just rock, plain and simple. |

I'm glad you liked Future Days, Kevin. This one was a good album to start with, Tago Mago and earlier works have a bit of a thougher edge to them that I personally love, but some might find a bit too raw. Keep on listening, one day you will listen to Pawn Hearts and realize it is a masterpiece, as was the case with me. I really love this album, it's probably in my top 10. But you summarized it well - it does have that unique dimension of its own, that's what makes it so special for me. A.R. & Machines - A.R IV I had forgotten just how beautiful Achim Reichel’s music is. I think he should be listed alongside Manuel Göttsching and Michael Rother as one of German guitar wizards. Absolutely mesmerizing music, sounds we all know, but this one really captures their spirit. Cosmic Sounds Of Gandharva - Energy A very interesting U.S. acid folk obscurity from 1977, approximately ten years after the genre gained popularity in the youth culture. This album is characterized by skilled and quite original, yet familiar songwriting and interesting use of percussion. Emtidi - Saat Definitely a gem. This one is quite similar to the recently-discussed Edge of Time by DOM, though not as dark, experimental, and, ultimately, groundbreaking. It’s more firmly set in the psychedelic folk tradition, but it’s not unambitious by any means. Loads of lush, varied spacey keyboards, beautiful sounds, great compositions, and wonderful female vocals – excellent album! Emerson Meyers - Provocative Electronics Interesting early electronic experimentation with an academic approach, quite typical of the late sixties and early seventies. Nothing distinguished, but it’s entertaining to listen to what Emerson Meyers was able to come up with. Gigi Masin & Charles Hayward - Les Nouvelles Musiques De Chambre Volume II Beautiful music, very easily flowing, a lot like sea waves on a calm days. Although I really like Charles Hayward, I must admit, I enjoyed Gigi Masin’s melodic side of the album a bit more. However, both musicians did a fantastic job on this one. Placebo - 1973 The synthesizer use on this album really saves it from being a bland jazz-fusion work that would get lost in the sea of so many, even if of very good quality. Very interesting horn arrangements, and, as I’ve mentioned, keyboard work. |

Do you have any recommendations on where I should move forward as far as getting into the Can discography? And yeah, I have no plans to stop listening to Pawn Hearts any time soon. I think that getting to appreciate Peter Hammill's voice was the biggest hurdle, but I've come to like his unorthodox delivery thanks to The Least We Can Do and H To He, which I both consider to be fantastic. Freeing oneself from the constraints of polished melody is very liberating indeed! As per Pawn Hearts, though, I think that side one is just about perfect. Lemmings has no faults that I can tell, but I'm not quite "vibing" to it just yet. Man-Erg is certainly a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned, though. That track is simply an adventure from start to finish. Very dramatic! Right now my contentions mostly lie with Plague of Lighthouse Keepers. It starts out strong, but seems to lose focus a little by the end, which is fitting in a way, but it's not quite up my alley just yet. Anyhow, I'll definitely give it more time, because I think the artistry on display certainly deserves it.

I would suggest you now move on to the previous album, Ege Bamyasi, which is a bit different stylistically, but equally rewarding. Tago Mago, the first of the great trilogy might be the hardest one to really start enjoying (or at least it was for me), because it has a bit of that raw edge, but it gets better with every listen. The first two, Monster Movie and Soundtracks, are different, a bit more rock-y and event proto-punk-y at times, but definitely worth checking out once you've made friends with the sound of Tago Mago. Hello gentlemen. Was adrift for a little bit, but of course at peace. It looks like everyone's sonic libraries are...well...still progressing. Nice to see/hear.
For the weekend. More of an Italian Dark Wave scene. Dperd-- Io sono En Errore Fear of The Storm-- madness Splinters (anthology 1991-1996 all 3 discs) Dperd-- Regalero' il mio tempo ( Michael. You'd love this one. No doubt. I do as well!) Mythos-- The reality of a Dreamer (Canadian electronic duo that can give Boards of Canada a serious run for their money. ) Shadowland-- Mad As A Hatter ( not a masterpiece but tracks like USI and Flatline are very very good. ) Saviour Machine-- Legend Pt1 (wow. It'll never get old. ) Hibernal-- The Dark Of The City. ( this is my first love of 2017. What an incredible album. Thematic masterpiece along with some of the most engaging atmospheric guitars you'll ever hear. 10/10. For fans of Balderunner, resident evil and Westworld you best get on this one. ;) Dperd- Kore ( went more heavy in this one. Solid listen though. ) IQ-- TFTLA (2013 remix. ) IQ-- Scrape The Sky ( Yes! I finally got IQ's first ever Blu ray concert. The stage..the lightening...the Band....it's all perfect. Another 2017 gem. Bela Bartok - Mikrokosmos - I'm not sure if this is something that I'll ever listen to again, but it was cool to hear it the whole way through. Essentially just a collection of etudes starting with "Hot Cross Buns" levels of simplicity and ending, 150 pieces later, with some quite technical piano workouts. Definitely a cool development to behold if you have the patience.
Bela Bartok - Cantata Profana - F*** that sure as hell woke me up after 2 hours of Mikrokosmos! This is not music for the faint of heart by any means. It starts off subtly enough, but this piece really erupts quite explosively. It's interesting that Robert Fripp was listening to a lot of Bartok around the time he was working on Larks' Tongues In Aspic because you can really hear those sorts of chaotic and dynamic influences quite prominently in here.Bela Bartok - The Wooden Prince - Another very interesting Bartok work. Just the right combination of craziness and sensibility; very nice. Ichthyander Dad's Only Dolphin - Playing Live At One Music Fest - A cool modern eclectic release. Nice blend of styles and good interplay in the band. I think that this should satisfy anyone who really digs the live material King Crimson put out between 1972 and 1974; the first several tracks are very much in the same style. Heavy, chaotic, complex, with prominent violin parts. Later on, though, it mellows out, even having some new age-like moments. Joe Satriani - Engines of Creation - This is growing to be one of my favourite Joe Satriani albums, if not just for the fact that it sounds completely different from everything else he's ever done. It also has two of his best tracks: the uplifting, bluesy Champagne? and the techno rock masterpiece Devil's Slide, which is simply awesome. Every time I put it on it makes me want to spike my hair up like an anime character and have a chase scene and ninja showdown through some cyberpunk industrial yard. |
