"Penumbra" opens the album up all tense and frantic, and features Sound Chaser two years before Steve Howe rewrote that lick, only to settle into a powerful and well-paced heavy psychedelic jam. Good stuff!

Glad you enjoy Steamhammer! There was indeed something in the air at that time, I don't know, maybe the stars aligned somehow? Very creative period. I am not familiar with Culpeper's Orchard, will have to investigate some of their music. I also like Speech, I think it's a very original album. Fabulous guitar work there.

Return To Forever - Light as a Feather

Apparently I was in the mood for demented, noisy, borderline dadaist collages of sound today

Yesterday:

Nucleus - We'll Talk About It Later As good as jazz-fusion gets. What a fantastic album this is! For some odd reason, I had not associated the riff from "Song For the Bearded Lady" with the phrase from Soft Machine's "Hazard Profile", though I knew Karl Jenkins did transport some Nucleus material to Soft Machine. Really amazing, creative, well-balanced music.

Sun Ra - Secrets of the Sun A really good Sun Ra album. I find it really defines what Sun Ra has been up to at the time. I had not been familiar with the version of "Love in Outer Space" from here and was quite surprised to find out how it originally used to be very dissonant. "Solar Symbols", the percussion-led closer, is phenomenal, as well. Just wish the recording quality was better on this album, but what would Sun Ra's music be without the noisy background?

Partick Vian - Bruits Et Temps Analogues This is some very well-arranged, jazz-fusion-informed electronic music. I really like the blend of atmospheres and contrast on this album. It goes from dancable new-age a la Tim Blake to Wendy Carlos-inspired orchestral synth melodies to jazz-fusion sort of in the vein of Weather Report.

Larry Young - Lawrence of Newark However, this is the album of the day. What an absolute monster this is! It's experimental, uncompromising, highly original and very pleasant at the same time. Larry Young's overdriven Hammond works really well in this avant-spritual-world-fusion context. Terrific music!

Saw Lustmord live The amazing Lustmord played here in Lublin the other night and his show was excellent. There was so much deep bass, I could feel my guts shaking, as was the whole building. The film projection was beautiful and complimented the music really well. Those 60 minutes went by very quickly. Great concert.

Truly quite original in its own way, it really grew on me! It was a blind-buy that turned out really well. Actually, an older friend of mine heard my CD of it earlier this year and flipped out over it, so I've actually bought her the CD for Christmas!

Indeed, Michael, "truly original in its own way" is the way to put it.

Sun Ra - Lanquidity Yes, this is my favorite Sun Ra album. I like inaccessable music, but in Sun Ra's case, the less "difficult" part of the discography wins me over. However, that is not to say that this album is not weird. It is! It is very weird. It's phenomenally orchestrated, unorthodoxly composed, and originally performed. And that's what I value the most.

Stomu Yamash'ta with Come to the Edge - Floating World Beautiful, beautiful music. Similarly to my previous listen, this is also "phenomenally orchestrated, unorthodoxly composed, and originally performed." The band makes some beautiful textures using this Farfisa organ, vibraphone, and electric piano. Melodies shake hands with free-improvisation and exotic percussion workouts. Another excellent album.

Klaus Schulze & Günter Schickert - The Schulze-Schickert Session This is your usual early Berlin School period Klaus Schulze recording, but it's very interesting nonetheless. Sadly, there is not all that much Günter Schickert on this album, it sounds mainly like Klaus Schulze playing alone with some really fresh ideas. I like this album, though. Recommended!

Miles Davis - Live Evil Oh boy, this might be my favorite Miles Davis album. I think it is. It takes everything I like about his fusion period and puts it into a lengthy, fulfilling, energetic live performance. Every musician does such amazing work on here. And the cover is lovely. A near-to-perfect album, if I ever heard one!
