Jeff Beck - Wired - An oldy but a goody. Classic jazz fusion with phenomenal synths by Jan Hammer and Jeff Beck's typical pyrotechnics.

Steamhammer - Mountains - Yep, this is some top notch blues rock. There are some great players in this band. There must have been something in the air around 1969-71, because you really can't go wrong with any of the psychedelic/proto-prog/blues albums from those few years.

Steamhammer - Steamhammer - Tymon, are you familiar with the Danish band Culpeper's Orchard? Their self-titled debut from 1970 is very much in the same vein as the Steamhammer I've heard so far, except veering more towards the psych/prog side than the blues. I think you'd like them if you're looking for an early 70's psychedelic/blues fix. As far as this Steamhammer debut, I'd say that it's just as well done as Mountains. Very fine band.

Steamhammer - MK II - Now this is some fine music! Love the wind touches, and the guitar playing is superb as always. Thanks for the recommendation, Tymon!

Steamhammer - Speech - When you've got the momentum going, why stop? Man, this album is pretty good! I have no idea why it has such a low rating on this site; it might just be my favourite Steamhammer album. "Penumbra" opens the album up all tense and frantic, and features Sound Chaser two years before Steve Howe rewrote that lick, only to settle into a powerful and well-paced heavy psychedelic jam. Good stuff!

Buckethead - Teeter Slaughter (Pike 19) - My very first time listening to Buckethead, and it's every bit as weird as I expected. This is certainly an eclectic record, just as siLLy puPPy had forewarned. I do like the fine balance between the softer parts, the upbeat funk, and the bat-s*** crazy metal sections, but the changes are often a bit too sporadic for my tastes. Generally a pretty good album, though, even if it's not something I'd ever pick up. Maybe I should try out some of the mellower pikes next.

Buckethead - Halls of Dimension (Pike 27) - Another highly acclaimed pike by siLLy puPPy. I'm not nearly as keen on this one; it seems to rely a lot more on metal riffs and endless shredding, which isn't my cup of tea.

Buckethead - Roller Coaster Track Repair (Pike 47) - Man, he is not messing around here! This may very well be one of the most aggressive, unrelenting shred albums of all time. The man (if he's even human) cannot be stopped! It's a good thing this wasn't out when I was 14, or I would have deafened myself endlessly replaying it for all its ludicrous guitar antics. Either that or I would have broken some joints trying to air guitar along.

Buckethead - Twilight Constrictor (Pike 75) - Well it's certainly nice to have something with some semblance of pacing again after the craziness that was Pike 47. There's a cool industrial vibe to this one that kind of reminds me of Joe Satriani's Engines of Creation. Not sure if I like this as much as Roller Coaster Track Repair, as the ambient stretch at the end tends to overstay its welcome a bit, but it has some cool moments.

Buckethead - Orange Tree (Pike 165) - Yeah, these pikes are all starting to blend into each other now. Maybe I should give Buckethead a little rest for a while.

IQ - Subterranea - Is it just me, or does each subsequent IQ album get less and less interesting? There really aren't as nearly many riveting instrumental sections like their first two 80's albums had, and Peter Nicholls seems a bit too reserved in his delivery. This really just feels like an overextended AOR album. Not terrible by any means, but simply not that interesting.

Alive in Paris 1970 (the whole concert is on YouTube), Live at Henie Onstad Art Centre, and Grides are my favorite live Soft Machine recordings. Breda Reactor is not great, but it's very interesting due to the "in-between-Volume-Two-and-Third" repertoire. Live at the Proms 1970 is also worth a listen, because they do the Terry Riley-esque opening to "Out-Bloody-Rageous."

Glad you enjoy Steamhammer! Smile There was indeed something in the air at that time, I don't know, maybe the stars aligned somehow? Very creative period. I am not familiar with Culpeper's Orchard, will have to investigate some of their music. I also like Speech, I think it's a very original album. Fabulous guitar work there.

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet

I'm trying, guys, year after year...but I still don't like them that much. I do feel Steven Wilson is overrated as a prog artist and underrated as a pop musician. I think Stupid Dream is PT's best album.
Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - "Tinderbox": I like the fact that this is a pretty well mixed guitar-based rock release, especially for something that came out in 1986 when a lot of producers thought "glossy and sterile" would never one day sound terribly dated. Starts off real good with "Candyman".

Siouxsie and the Banshees - "Peepshow": This '88 followup is a lot more poppy, but still retains a bit of goth flair (though not a lot). "Peek-A-Boo" remains one of the weirder pop tunes out there to this day. Vaudville Betty Boop with a "reverse" horn section and 80's borderline industrial drums. It's alright but not a fav album.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - "Superstition" - Funny how this early 90's release hasn't aged well production-wise compared to much of their 80's stuff. It's okay though since some of these poppish ditties are real gems ("Kiss Them for Me", "Shadowtime"). Besides, not many pop albums have such a great haunting gloom-monster such as "Drifter" on their track-lists.

Yesterday:

Nucleus - We'll Talk About It Later As good as jazz-fusion gets. What a fantastic album this is! For some odd reason, I had not associated the riff from "Song For the Bearded Lady" with the phrase from Soft Machine's "Hazard Profile", though I knew Karl Jenkins did transport some Nucleus material to Soft Machine. Really amazing, creative, well-balanced music.

Sun Ra - Secrets of the Sun A really good Sun Ra album. I find it really defines what Sun Ra has been up to at the time. I had not been familiar with the version of "Love in Outer Space" from here and was quite surprised to find out how it originally used to be very dissonant. "Solar Symbols", the percussion-led closer, is phenomenal, as well. Just wish the recording quality was better on this album, but what would Sun Ra's music be without the noisy background?

Partick Vian - Bruits Et Temps Analogues This is some very well-arranged, jazz-fusion-informed electronic music. I really like the blend of atmospheres and contrast on this album. It goes from dancable new-age a la Tim Blake to Wendy Carlos-inspired orchestral synth melodies to jazz-fusion sort of in the vein of Weather Report.

Larry Young - Lawrence of Newark However, this is the album of the day. What an absolute monster this is! It's experimental, uncompromising, highly original and very pleasant at the same time. Larry Young's overdriven Hammond works really well in this avant-spritual-world-fusion context. Terrific music!

Saw Lustmord live The amazing Lustmord played here in Lublin the other night and his show was excellent. There was so much deep bass, I could feel my guts shaking, as was the whole building. The film projection was beautiful and complimented the music really well. Those 60 minutes went by very quickly. Great concert.

Great album, Tymon! Truly quite original in its own way, it really grew on me! It was a blind-buy that turned out really well.

Actually, an older friend of mine heard my CD of it earlier this year and flipped out over it, so I've actually bought her the CD for Christmas!

Sun Ra - Lanquidity Yes, this is my favorite Sun Ra album. I like inaccessable music, but in Sun Ra's case, the less "difficult" part of the discography wins me over. However, that is not to say that this album is not weird. It is! It is very weird. It's phenomenally orchestrated, unorthodoxly composed, and originally performed. And that's what I value the most.

Stomu Yamash'ta with Come to the Edge - Floating World Beautiful, beautiful music. Similarly to my previous listen, this is also "phenomenally orchestrated, unorthodoxly composed, and originally performed." The band makes some beautiful textures using this Farfisa organ, vibraphone, and electric piano. Melodies shake hands with free-improvisation and exotic percussion workouts. Another excellent album.

Klaus Schulze & Günter Schickert - The Schulze-Schickert Session This is your usual early Berlin School period Klaus Schulze recording, but it's very interesting nonetheless. Sadly, there is not all that much Günter Schickert on this album, it sounds mainly like Klaus Schulze playing alone with some really fresh ideas. I like this album, though. Recommended!

Miles Davis - Live Evil Oh boy, this might be my favorite Miles Davis album. I think it is. It takes everything I like about his fusion period and puts it into a lengthy, fulfilling, energetic live performance. Every musician does such amazing work on here. And the cover is lovely. A near-to-perfect album, if I ever heard one! Smile

Bubu - Anabelas - Ah, how satisfying it is to know that objective perfection exists in this world.

PFM - Storia Di Un Minuto - How about that for a follow up, courtesy of shuffle! Again, a fantastic journey from start to finish, all in a tight, little 35-minute bundle.
