Steve Hackett - Wolflight - Perhaps not the most original or innovative album out there, but a very enjoyable one nonetheless. Plenty of great melodies on display. I especially love Hackett's nylon string work on here.
Billy Cobham - Stratus - Man if there was ever the essential album for cruising the city streets on a summer night, this one would be on the shortlist. This album was recorded in 2 days and the spontaneity shows, especially in the uptempo tracks like Quadrant 4. And the more laid back numbers, Stratus, Le Lis, Red Baron, almost too smooth. Love it, love it, love it. Sea Level - Sea Level - Love me some breezy coastal southern rock fusion. I don't like the debut quite as much as Cats On The Coast, but both are phenomenal in their own respects. The instrumentals on here are absolutely killer.

Ozric Tentacles - The Yumyum Tree
Il Paradiso Degli Orchi - Il Corponauta Klaus Schulze - Picture Music (Much more accessible than any previous work, sounds like a good place to start.) Yugen - Death by Water (It's really good indeed, Michael. Very diverse for a 40 minute album too.) Carlos Paredes - Guitarra Portuguesa (After all the instrumental confusion of Yugen, just portuguese and classical guitar. Pure magic on record )

Darkthrone - "Under a Funeral Moon": In a loopy alternative universe, Darkthrone actually existed well before Black Sabbath, and the album cover of Paranoid was a clever drunken parody of this Darkthrone album.
Renaissance - "Prologue": Remains my favorite Renaissance album, followed by the debut. My preferences may be at odds with quite a few, but oh well. The title track is such a great rush and the closer is trippy greatness. Sir Lord Baltimore - "Kingdom Come": Awesome stuff, though as far as proto-metal is concerned, I actually liken this album as a mix of blues rock with the hyperdrive of early 80's Black Flag in terms of the guitars.

Considering this is friday and I just got off work I have managed to listen to quite a good chunk of music. I entirely blame the man next door and his drill showing off at about half past six this morning. Oh joy! I may just have to blast Trout Mask Replica or some wild electric Miles some time after 11 tonight...see if he digs a little weirdness with his shut-eye.
Aaaanyway: Metá Metá - MM3 (one of the finest discoveries of 2016 for me. Sensual Brazilian music meets psych, post-punk and a wild saxophone lead type of jazz) Tangerine Dream - Boxset Mannheim gig (first one. Brilliant track and I just love the ferocity of the sequencers) Bent Knee - Say So (Yep because I said so) Now listeing to Metá Metá's sophomore release MetaL MetaL though there's no trace of metal but a sumptious soup of the aforementioned ingredients. This band is outstanding! I feel like dancing...and I'm on the bus! Edited by Guldbamsen - November 25 2016 at 08:23 |

Today: EYE - Vision and Ageless Light (A very cool new retro Space Rock album ) Steve Roach - New Life Dreaming (Do you know this one already, Michael?) Oren Ambarchi - Hubris (I read something about this new album and was intrigued... and then I noticed his relation with Fire!. Side A reminds me of Göttsching's E2-E4 and side B doesn't sound too far from Fire! but focused on electronics.) Sergei Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 3, 4

I thought of you today just because of the Portuguese lingo funneling through my cabeza. I think you'd dig it big time. Their sophomore album is also really tasty, which, btw, is the only one I can find any samples of: http://metametabrasil.bandcamp.com Oh and I am currently listening to some Samuel C Love the electronic vibe my friend but perhaps even moreso your gentle guitar manners. Sweet. |

Sam, I've just checked out some Oren Ambarchi and am wondering why I had never heard him before! Hubris is very much in the vein of E2-E4 indeed, but it's very original nonetheless. Amazing music. Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 is one of my favorite classical pieces of all time. That opening is so majestic, so beautiful. |

John Hassell - Power Spot Some really nice ECM ambient/experimental-jazz. Great emphasis on rhythm with ehtnic stylings. Nothing extremely exciting, but very good music for some morning maths.
Embryo - Steig Aus Love this album! I am getting into Embryo recently and the band is amazing! Their mix of Eastern influences, stoned krautrock jamming, and Miles-esque jazz-fusion is addictive! Area - Are(A)zione This would be a great album if not for low quality recording of a few tracks, namely the title piece. Otherwise, it's excellent - Area must've been a phenomenal live act. Art Ensemble of Chicago - Reese and the Smooth Ones Great free-jazz. Similarly to 'Trane, these musicians go to their African roots, mix them with free-improv and come up with magnificent results. |
