Sounds like something I would really like! Will have to check this one out. Henry Cow - Western Culture One excellent album to start your day! I went to bed really late yesterday and I couldn't fall asleep, but this album got me on my feet effectively. I am appreciating this so much right now, especially when I think of all these melodies, rhythms, and harmonies. Great, great album. Ash Ra Tempel - Join Inn The recent Ash Ra Tempel albums poll got me wanting to revisit this album, which I had not investigated to a great extent. It's good, but I see, why I had not been thinking of coming back to it - there is something really one-dimensional about it, something kind of flat, despite Manuel's fantastic guitar work and Klaus Schulze's synthesizer playing. Art Ensemble of Chicago - People in Sorrow Very good album. It's free-jazz, but it's on the mellow side, it's more ambient. There are no loud overblows nor pounding on the drumkit like mad nor anything sounding like a cat walking on a piano. This is very mellow, deep, spiritual music. Flute is one of the great instruments here, double bass gently accompanies in the background. John McLaughlin - Extrapolation One of John McLaughlin's first album appearances. It's 1969 and he sounds nothing like he would even one year later on Bitches Brew or Devotion. It's electro-acoustic post-bop for the most part with fusion melodies and harmonies, but rather traditional arrangements. Nice album! |

Ophiucus - Ophiucus - A folky French album from 1971. I saw a 5 star review for it on the front page the other day with a lot of Harmonium comparisons, so I was naturally very intrigued. The production is unsurprisingly rough, but the music itself is not bad at all. Plenty of calm acoustic sections, fine melodies, and the singing is quite pleasant. No Serge Fiori, but still a nice voice and very appropriate for the music. In fact, I have to give these guys credit for having a surprisingly wide sonic palette. Though most of the music is pastoral folk, there are some vaguely eastern sounding moments and some heavier psychedelic sections. Not essential, but a nice blend of music altogether.

That's an album I hold in very high regard, David. It's a really brave effort for 1969. The track "Caledonia" is mind-blowing. Egg - The Civil Surface I love this album and have loved it since the very first time I heard it. There is something so playful and whimsical about these melodies and harmonies here and they are at the highest technical level. This mixture of many different influences, jazz-fusion, 20th century classical, avant-rock, is incredibly effective. Acid Mothers Temple - In C I am big into minimalism and I was curious what kind of stuff Acid Mothers Temple, a band I had investigated very briefly a while ago, might be able to conjure up with such a title. The music is interesting to say the least. Very original, although the framework is mostly krautrock/space-rock-inspired, this is actually minimal and I liked this album. John Surman - Tales of the Algonquin John Surman is a musician I really like, same goes for this album. It's a great representation of his and his band's capabilities. It's similar to many British jazz records of the early seventies - on the edge of post-bop, rhythm and instrument-wise, and fusion, harmonically. Really nice! Isotope - Illusion Aaaand now we travel to more jazz-fusion oriented territories. This is a great album. These energetic rapid grooves are, in my opinion, quintessential of fusion. Hugh Hopper has some excellent bass parts, especially on the title track. Gary Boyle on guitar is a wizard. Keyboard work is also spectacular. This band played together really well. Teddy Lasry - E=MC² Sam, this is indeed a very original album. I really liked it. It's electronic for sure, but you can't tell if it's jazz-oriented or what. There are influences of jazz, folk, and ethnic music and they blend really well. For what I know, this is very well-crafted melodic progressive electronic music. Klaus Schulze - Mirage Definitely my favorite Klaus Schulze album. All of the elements of his music that I love click on this album. It's so emotional, so atmospheric, so beautiful, this is a jewell. Even from my computer, it sounds so sharp, these soundscapes are really delightful. I am definitely looking into getting the record. |

Cool, I knew you'd like it. Yes, it's a very difficult album to categorize, really not the usual PE stuff. Yesterday: The Doors - Full Circle (Quite different from the previous album, who was clearly a follow-up of LA Woman. I think I liked this one slightly more. Sure it has some filler but even the Morrison albums had IMO, except maybe the debut.) Eloy - Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes John Coltrane - My Favourite Things |

Moondog - Moondog I really like Moondog. His music is inexplicable - you would say it's classical, but there is something theatrically folk-y about his music here. Odd rhythms portraying a viking ritual on Saturn... I know it sounds mad - but that's exactly the way this album is. If highly original music interests you, you need to hear this album.
Henry Cow - Unrest I love this album. First few months of my time with Henry Cow, I could not get into it anyhow - it just seemed too strange and awkward. My opinion has changed drastically. Intricate, atmospheric free-improvisation-informed avant-jazzy chamber rock is what this album is. Really love it. Art Ensemble of Chicago - Phase One I have been really digging Art Ensemble of Chicago recently. It's free-jazz, but as I've mentioned before, it sometimes even borders with ambient music. This album is generally noisier than what I came to know from AEoC, but is very original nonetheless. L'Infonie - Vol. 333 This is interesting. I had never listened to this band before, having heard of it only from Keishiro's reviews and several RYM lists. It turns out these guys play something very much up my alley, avant-jazz-rock in the vein of LegEnd-era Henry Cow, just a bit simpler. Nice! |

Alpha Wave Movement – Transcendence
Alpha Wave Movement – Kinetic Ashra – Inventions for Electric Guitar Oresund Space Collective- Music for Pogonologists Oresund Space Collective – Ode to a Black Hole Deuter - Aum Alphataurus – s/t - was half asleep at work with only four hours sleep, so the forceful loud vocals on this woke me up! Always a ripper of an album. Promenade - Noi Al Dir Di Noi - Definitely one of the standout new Italian discs of the year! Insanely frantic and busy sax-dominated Italian prog with a youthful energy. |
