Yeah, I read that QVL interview a while back. Great read. I tried looking for the old house they jammed in on google maps (with limited success). If I ever go to Italy I'd really like to check it out, assuming it's still standing, of course.

Today:

Jukka Gustavson - Valon Vuoksi - A surprisingly riveting album given that it's almost exclusively one man playing keyboards for 45 minutes. Plenty of pastoral moments, and some very moving sections. Very lovely music, actually; it kind of reminds me of listening to a Sibelius tone poem, only with jazzy touches.

Il Rovescio Della Medaglia - Contaminazione - A very creative album loaded with classical influences. Incredibly stately and elegant, loaded with beautiful passages. Very nice!

Edit: One more for tonight:

Nuova Era - Il Passo Del Soldato - Plenty of prime keyboard goodness for symphonic lovers to be heard here. This has definitely piqued my interest in discovering some of the more contemporary Italian groups. Simply fantastic.

Terje Rypdal - Whenever I Seem To Be Far Away BRILLIANT! Oh man, this is outstanding. This is exactly what I love about ECM records from the early 70's. It's most definitely jazz-fusion, but it has a progressive spirit. There are evident influences of Messiaen and Stravinsky, especially on the orchestral arrangements. The atmosphere is very dark, yet warm. Love this album.

Tangerine Dream - Zeit I don't know, I always thought this was one of the better Tangerine Dream albums with Stratosfear, Phaedra, and Alpha Centauri. I cannot understand how a few people were able to write one-star reviews of this album. It's difficult, but four distinctively different soundscapes on four distinctively different "suites" are among one of the most atmospheric and original that I've ever heard.

Placebo - 1973 That's an interesting band. Michael, I think you wrote a review on the self-titled album by this Belgian band Abraxis a while ago, haven't you? This is a related band. And it does sound really good. The horn arrangements are big and the music shows strong influence of Soft Machine. Loads of synths, which sometimes add an almost krautrock-esque feel.

Moebius/Plank/Neumeier - Zero Set I generally don't really like the "eighties" sound, but this is really good. It's dance music, for the most part, but it's of really high quality. Mani Neumeier's drumming is phenomenal and I like the sequencer work by the two other gentlemen.

Dreams - Dreams I am not very much into vocal jazz-rock a la Blood Sweat and Tears, which this is, on most days, but it's great background music and it's pleasant. It's well written, well arranged, and varied. Instrumentally, it's really interesting, there are many layers of sounds and many sounds to be heard. Recommended!

Yeah, those 1-star reviewers sure are something, aren't they? It's been a while since I actually listened to Zeit, but I remember it certainly wasn't awful; pretty nice, really. I guess the people who take jabs at Zeit are the same kinds of people who hate on stuff like Tales From Topographic Oceans, or Moonchild. Some people just want immediate gratification from their music and can't stand to listen to something that takes its time to develop. 

I'll have to check it out again. I wasn't huge on progressive electronic stuff last time, but I've been listening to a lot more TD lately and really loving it. I don't think anything will top Phaedra and Ricochet, though; those are awesome albums!

How do you think Zeit compares to Klaus Schulze's Cyborg, the other classic four-sided ambient album from 1972? The two albums are pretty close, I'd say, but Schulze just edges it out. And anyone who thinks Zeit is too difficult or "unmusical" should give Irrlicht a try. Maybe throw some Tony Conrad or La Monte Young in there to really mess with people Thumbs Up

Ricochet the best TD album? Above Electronic Meditation, Alpha Centauri, Zeit, Atem, Rubycon, and Phaedra? Nah... Fine album though. 

Anyway only one album for me today, Sonny Criss' Sonny's Dream (Birth of the New Cool). Too many research papers to work on to get much listening done.

Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow - Ah, love me some good ol' Jon Anderson kumbaya sun worship "changing-the-world-with-the-power-of-song" music! This is a very beautiful album, and though it may not have quite the firepower of Yes' music, it has all the spiritual appeal and equally divine melodies and harmonies. Always a delight when I put this one on, especially if I have the LP gatefold storybook to peruse while I listen.

AC/DC - High Voltage - And now for Olias of Sunhillow's polar opposite. I can thank Eddie for this one with his Aussie rock poll. Sweet and simple, gets the job done. That bagpipe solo, man...

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood - I don't really care for listening to full blues albums since they start to sound repetitive after 3 or 4 songs (such is the nature of the genre), but I can't help but crack up every time I hear Pride And Joy. Some very funny memories of that track back in high school.

Ramones - Ramones - Yeah, who needs to listen to complex music, anyway? This one is probably my favourite album from the Ramones, though I really only listen to them on a song-per-song basis 95% of the time. Choice cuts: Blitzkrieg Bop, Judy Is A Punk, Havana Affair.

Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band - That's How We Roll - A super fun piece of big band revival, with some latin, funk and other miscellaneous jazz subgenres thrown in. Man, the sax solo in the title track absolutely rips! Love it.

Beatles - Let It Be - This is probably my favourite Beatles album, actually. Love the bluesy touches that they added to the material here (Dig A Pony, I Me Mine). I don't care for the ballads like title track or The Long And Winding Road, but the more rock-oriented material on here is pretty sweet.

Supertramp - Crime Of The Century - One word: School. If you wanna get me up on my feet air keyboarding like my life depended on it, just put on this song.

Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida - I'm not a super huge fan of the early heavy psychedelic stuff, but this isn't too bad to indulge in every now and again.

Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning(My favorite HC album now, Dagmar Krause voice it's too powerful and mixes really well with the compostions)
Samla Mammas Manna - Samla Mammas Manna(My favorite SMM album, it's so different from the others more analytic and technical albums from them, this one is so much more energetic and different!)
Etron Fou Leloublan - Batelages(The first song is the best from this band, soo many different styles fused with a beautiful language that is french!)
Frank Zappa - Absolutely Free(Favorite one from Mothers of Invention phase, outstanding individual little songs and the absolutely masterpiece Brown Shoes Don't Make It in the end, simply wonderful)
Art Zoyd - Häxän(The most challenging album that i've heard hands down, i've already tried 2 or 3 times in different times this album, but i don't give up because i really fell that's something really mindblowing in this one.)

Well, my day was it! :)

I do have the `Growing Up' DVD, got it the day it came out, but sadly blu-rays hadn't quite kicked in at that point, otherwise I would have just bought that! Aaron Lewis-- Sinner
Thelonious Monk-- Monk's Dream ( incredible 1963 recording. )
The Police-- Live at the Boston Orpheum 1979
Magadeth- Rock Icon Greatest hits ( Hangar 18 is way too satisfying. )
Mark Knopler & dire Straits-- Private investigations (disc 1) ( the holy grail of pure hi-fi recording magic. )
Depeche mode-- violator ( a deadly 5.1 mix. Not much better done than this disc. )
Muddy waters-- Folk Singer ( the emotion on this record is a thing of beauty. )
Threshold-- European Journey ( DW's vocals are just as strong live. )
IQ-- Dark Matter ( a staple. A classic for me. )
Tool-- Lateralus ( amazing arrangements on this one. It's their best I feel. )
Fields of the Nephilim-- summerland EP. ( best EP of 1990 for me. )
The Beatles-- Love ( the use of pro tools for an intensely great remix and cross fading is just amazing. Great listen. )
Genesis-- Duke ( 5.1 surround mix. This was probably my favourite album that I heard this week. Got a lot of enjoyment from this one. I highly recommend grabbing the 5.1mix.)
Nick Cave & the bad seeds-- Skeleton Tree ( simply one of the very best albums I've heard this year. )
Slipknot-- the gray chapter. ( getting better with every listen. )
Sacred Arias & Choruses-- Ave Maria ( beethtoven, Mozart, Bach, Bizet, Handel and Francis are all present on this album. )
The mission-- The Brightest light. ( Wayne Hussey never stops trying new things. )

I really like Cyborg very much and it would be hard to pick which one I prefer. A few weeks ago, it would have been Cyborg, now it's Zeit. It just changes.

I did not say Ricochet is "the best" TD albums, I just added that it is among my favorites that I listed earlier. As for now, my favorite is probably Alpha Centauri, "Fly and Collision of Comas Sola" is undoubtedly my #1 TD track.
