Dig this group a lot, especially their latest...which should be on my AotY list. Mary's Blood - 'Fate': My favorite all-girl metal act are back with some shiny razor speed/thrash with a bit of hard rock catchiness thrown in. Saki is such a great guitarist...love that woman. Real happy with this. Neil Diamond - 'Tap Root Manuscript': Side one is kinda pants except for the flawless "Cracklin' Rosie", but whoa, side 2 is this concept world-beat thing ahead of its time. Some of it works, such as "Soolaimón". Vektor - 'Terminal Redux': Nothing quite like outer space thrash. Some Voivod, some latter era Death, some tech death/thrash and sci-fi themes up the wazoo. Long as hell but lots of fun regardless.

Cool! I'm not sure if Eclectics will like it, though, they might find it a bit to electronic and not really all that prog. Definitely a hard band to classify, but IMHO Progressive Electronic is the place for Zacht Automaat. But that's just like my opinion, man, the choice is down to the collaborators, of course. Elton Dean - Just Us This is a great album, because it remains the experimental Facelift-esque spirit of the Soft Machine, despite being a purely free-fusion album. Sometimes, the atonality gets over your head, but then, just at the right time, the atmosphere is mellowed out by a Bitches Brew-like jam. Circus - Movin' On It was different than I expected after hearing "Dawn", the track that Kevin linked over at his Assorted Obscurities thread. It's an interesting band, but there is something I find difficult to get used to. The vocal parts sound a little obvious to me, but the instrumental passages are great and original-sounding. East Of Eden - Snafu One of my favorite albums of all time. You have got everything here from Charles Mingus, to Arabic music, to tape experimentation predating The Residents, to Irish jigs, to free jazz, in jazz-rock framework. This is a great album and if you are into creative, original music, you need to check this out. |

Tymon - that Elton Dean album is insanely good. Neo-Caliban Grides and Blind Badger absolutely blow. And I love the drumming of Phil Howard. You ought to invest in a copy of Soft Machine's live album called 'Drop'.
Oh yeah - Snafu is the only Eden LP I have, and it's a beauty. I had another many years ago, I think a s/t with a grainy photo of 3 guys on the cover. It was very bland and unexciting so I got rid of it. Edited by Tom Ozric - November 04 2016 at 13:55 |

"Neo-Caliban Grides" and "Blind Badger" are indeed one of the better tracks, I also love "Ooglenenovastrome", the opener. I will look for Drop, it's probably indeed worth having for a Soft Machine fan that I am. I have only heard bits of it. Isn't it the only live album with the Ratledge-Hopper-Dean-Howard line-up? I think it is. I'm currently really digging Alive in Paris 1970 and I think I might even be getting a DVD, as I have watched the concert a thousand times and I'm still not bored. I wish Lyn Dobson stayed with the Softs, he plays together with Elton incredibly nicely! As to that East of Eden album you are talking about, it must've been their third release, which is indeed pretty boring and uninventive. The debut is equally good to Snafu. |

I might argue Close To The Edge for that, actually. I've found the first half of the title track be mildly spring-y, And You And I is more summer-like, The more sentimental Seasons of Man goes nicely with autumn, And Siberian Khatru, of course, is winter.

How very fitting to the discussion my iPod's shuffle is... only one album today, but what an album it was!
Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans - Very quickly becoming one of my all-time favourite all-time favourites, up there with Anabelas and Si On Avait Besoin d'Une Cinquieme Saison. 80+ minutes of gorgeous music, ranging from grand, majestic, and colossal to simple, naive, and nostalgic, to spacey, avant-garde, and abstract, to cheery, bright, and upbeat. There's something here for any occasion! Looking for something to meditate to? Got it. Looking for something to put in cruising down the highway? Got it. Looking for something to put on for a lazy day at the beach? Got it. And despite the vast range of material and all its versatility, it still works so well as one coherent listening experience. In fact, I don't really like to think of Tales as listening to an album, it's more like watching a movie; the music has such a cinematic quality at times, and the whole thing is just brimming with beautiful imagery. Love it!

Yepp, it's almost always a new sensory adventure when I play it. Unlike so many other albums, its not an album that is easily assimilated. |

Ian Carr with Nucleus - Belladonna Outstanding album, I am really digging Nucleus recently. Although this is one of their lower rated albums from the classic era, I probably even like it even more than Elastic Rock. Great ballance between all of the elements that make the band. Great keyboard playing and magnificent guitar work from Allan Holdsworth himself.
Aksak Maboul - Onze Danses Pour Combattre la Migraine What a great band! Another RIO treat I've been missing out on for much too long. The music is very varied, which I really like. It has bits of danceable electronic (with drum machines and all), chamber pieces (not as dark as Univers Zero, though), bright Hatfield and the North-esque tracks with great Fender Rhodes, a small child singing a capella, and many different shades of full-on avant-garde. Terrific music! Jan Garbarek - Sart I'm not really impressed. I like avant-jazz and most of the stuff that has been released on the early ECM label, but this one just does not seem to click for me at this point in time, but maybe it's just "this point in time." Coloristically, it's really nice - Terje Rypdal's electric guitar sound give great results blending with the more traditional ensemble. |

These guys are playing in Melbourne on December 8th (a day after I finish my next nightshift block, so technically I'll be on days off). I'm seriously considering going if I can convince a mate, the only thing putting me off is that it's been years since I've heard one of their albums. Heh, and Krakatau is the support act, which would make it even sweeter...I might be able to ask them in person what the F happened between their Tangerine Dream/krautrock-flavoured debut and that recent calpyso whatever EP they just put out! Oh yeah man! I love Nucleus and I'm not even a huge jazz head. Great stuff. I only have a couple of their mid 70s albums so far. |
