It was alright. A handful of songs were pretty well written but the rest were a tad underwhelming. They've got some talent but they don't do anything very exciting or especially interesting.

I agree, I think "In My Tribe" is their most boring. If you have a chance try those earlier albums. They were more exciting like Hope Chest.

Loads of studying, so only one today, even though it's Saturday.
Frank Zappa - Lumpy Gravy I'm really liking it, I can't see why it gets such low ratings. Almost seems as if because this music is quite esoteric and simply difficult, more fans used to Zappa's more accessible classic works dislike this. Very strange music and I love it that way. Not only is it really original, but it's also incredibly entertaining. |

Midday study break:
King Crimson - In The Wake of Poseidon - One of my all-time favourites, I don't even compare this one to Court anymore since it just stands so well on its own. Pictures of A City - man, is there anyone out there playing stuff this hectic these days? Michael Giles kills on this one, and Fripp and Collins just go berserk, especially at the end when they just start trashing their instruments - I love it. And Cadence and Cascade must be the sweetest collection sounds I've ever heard. Collins' fluttering flute, Keith Tippet's impressionist piano touches, even Gordon Haskell sounds divine here, and this is no doubt some of Fripp's most memorable acoustic work. The title track is monumental as always, with the sumptuous layers of mellotron and Greg Lake's powerful voice creating such evocative imagery. I adore the drum sound in this one; Michael Giles fills sound so full and fluid. And side two is just as great, with the gorgeous Peace: A Theme, scathingly funny Cat Food and The Devil's Triangle. I'll be honest, I prefer Holst's original Mars, but in the context of the album, this does a great job at freaking you right out so that Peace: An End sinks right into your soul and clears your head; it's very therapeutic in a way. 10/10 album, no doubt. Edit: This evening: Weidorje - Weidorje - My first listen of this album, and the next instalment in the "expanding my zeuhl horizons" series. This may be one of my favourite finds from the genre so far. It's the first zeuhl I've ever heard that rocks and grooves like this one does! The opening track is so funky; I can see myself putting this on when I'm partying with some aliens in some kind of intergalactic party UFO with an orgy-fuelled warp drive. Awesome stuff! Acqua Fragile - Acqua Fragile - Another first listen, decided to pick this one on a whim. I'm not really feeling it tonight, though. The instrumentalists in the group are tight, with some nice keyboard and guitar trade-off licks going on, but the singer kind of kills it for me. For now, at least. This is one I'll have to revisit. Alas - Alas - See my latest review. I'm not quite as keen on this one as their second album, Pinta Tu Aldea, but fans of Argentinian prog should check certainly check out both.

Word! It's one of my favorite non-Magma zeuhl albums. Have you already tried Eskaton's 4 Visions? It's equally amazing! Edited by ALotOfBottle - October 16 2016 at 00:50 |

I was actually just about to put that one on, but then I decided to go to bed early. I've added it to my to-listen list, though!

miRthkon - Snack(s) It's a nice album, but I think it would be even nicer without thrash metal-esque rhythm guitar and insanely heavy drumming, which sound very out-of-place here, in my opinion, and vocals, which sound like western swing to me. The compositions are great, though, and horn arrangements are very tasty!
Terje Rypdal - Terje Rypdal Love this album. One of my favorite ECM releases of all time. Just shows how inventive and creative jazz-fusion can be. Excellent! |
