Dream Theater, musical masturbation? I may have stopped listening to them nearly a dozen years ago, but I don't remember their style as "masturbatory": "Pull Me Under" or "6:00" are really good songs (and I insist that I stopped listening to them a long time ago, because their music was a bit too much "clean" and mainstream for me).
If you want musical masturbation, go listen to Behold The Arctopus or Upsilon Acrux (there are also some noise-rock and math-rock bands which are guilty of such behaviours). |

Try listening to instrumental shred albums, I dare you or albums that Malmsteen released after 1996. I don't think anyone would complain about DT that much anymore.

Are you talking about Öystein Malmsteen ? Honestly, I donīcare of any Malmsteen. And as for instrumental "shredding" I know many artists more interesting and better than DT. Have a great day there.

Metropolis is DTīs most mature and interesting work for sure. I donīt actually listen it anymore. Believe or not I once owned all the best DT albums (CDs and DVDs) recommended by a very good friend way back circa 15 years ago. DT was his "best" ever band. I really tried to get their thing/music but never did. Because of their neverending soloing, from ALL players who ALL are VIRTUOSOS as such, technically but NOT MUSICALLY IMO. Even the bass player gets soloing all the time, the bassist should concentrate on basic in music, the low notes that cement rhythm, for goodness sake ! And that bassist is not Chris Squire, not even close ! Music is much more than endless soloing. I sold all my DT albums and havenīt looked back ever since. I have three thousand albums so I wonīt waste my time anymore. Life is short.
Btw, Iīm NOT REALLY insulting anyone here on PA and I never get insulted. But sometimes man has to defend himself from direct hostility, hasnīt he. In general I mean. I just say what I really think. Like we all do, I think ? This is just music, no more no less. And for othersī opinions about music, art, social issues, politics, religions... I really donīt give a damn. Why on earth should I, especially when the other is totally opposite ?? It very seldom leads anywhere and is not constructive. And the singer, I just couldnīt stand his voice at all. All that dream theater hassle... what a bloody waste of time

^ thanks for explaining I don't get it how you thought I was hostile; also, no one should find insulting when someone ask for an argument for their statements. Is asking someone to explain why they dislike a band such a big deal? Two DT albums I hardly ever listen to anymore are Systematic Chaos and Six Degrees (and it's usually the short ones, not the epic). SC is like an endless show-off. Still calling it "masturbation" is exaggerated IMO. Their last album was a huge disappointment, if they continue on this path, I'm kinda done with them. I will always love the Kevin Moore albums, for me they never got old. They never topped those albums if you ask me (unpopular opinion, I bet
