Ever wanted to learn to play guitar and/or bass, or if you already know how, to play certain songs?
A couple years ago I bought a "video game" called Rocksmith, 2014 Edition. You plug in a real electric guitar or bass and use the game to learn guitar/bass and play along with, as of now, around 900 songs. Each week some downloadable content (DLC) is released of generally three to five songs. These are the actual studio versions released by the artists. A few weeks ago the "Rush Song Pack II" was released, giving Rush a tie (with Jimi Hendrix!) for the most songs in the game at 12. This coming week is a Dream Theater 3-pack (but 26+ minutes total!), so I thought it was time to give the game a plug on this site. While the prog content is fairly low, there are still a lot of good songs. Also, they are releasing a "remastered" version of the game in October (http://rocksmith.ubi.com/rocksmith/en-us/remastered/index.aspx). It's not a new game, but its a retail "re-release" with some enhancements to the 2014 version. If you don't already own the game (if you do you get "Remastered" as a free "patch") you will be able to buy this updated version and also get six new DLC songs for free. No prog here, but they are: “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley & The Wailers “Hey Ya!” by Outkast “Drops of Jupiter” by Train “Suspicious Minds” by Elvis Presley “Some Nights” by fun. “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5 I have no connection with the game other than being a fan of it. Below are all of the prog and "related" songs in the game (assuming I didn't miss any). Progressive Rock and Progressive Metal Rush - Tom Sawyer - Red Barchetta - YYZ - Limelight - Subdivisions - Headlong Flight - The Spirit of Radio - Free Will - La Villa Strangiato - Working Man - Fly By Night - Closer to the Heart Dream Theater - Metropolis — Part I: "The Miracle and the Sleeper" - On the Backs of Angels - third song TBA, but very likely "Pull Me Under" Focus - Hocus Pocus Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son - Dust in the Wind Mastodon - Blood and Thunder - Colony of Birchmen - Oblivion - Black Tongue Between the Buried and Me - Selkies: The Endless Obsession Queensr˙che - Silent Lucidity - Eyes of a Stranger - I Don't Believe in Love - Jet City Woman Radiohead - High and Dry - Bodysnatchers - Paranoid Android - Creep - Just - Optimistic - Karma Police - My Iron Lung Sigur Rós - Gobbledigook The Dear Hunter - Stuck On A Wire Out On A Fence Hail The Sun - Eight Ball, Coroner's Pocket - Burn Nice and Slow (The Formative Years) Santana - Black Magic Woman - Oye Coma Va - Smooth Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party Prog-related / Proto-prog Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze - The Wind Cries Mary - Manic Depression - Foxey Lady - Bold As Love - Castles Made Of Sand - Little Wing - Freedom - Fire - If 6 was 9 - Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Red House The Who - My Generation - Baba O'Riley - Behind Blue Eyes - Who Are You - Pinball Wizard - The Seeker Styx - Renegade - Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water - Highway Star Iron Maiden - The Trooper - The Number Of The Beast - Run To The Hills - Aces High - 2 Minutes To Midnight - Fear Of The Dark Muse - Unnatural Selection - Plug In Baby - Knights of Cydonia - Hysteria - Time Is Running Out - Supermassive Black Hole - Stockholm Syndrome - Muscle Museum Queen - We Are The Champions - Bohemian Rhapsody - Keep Yourself Alive - Killer Queen - Fat Bottomed Girls - Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Another One Bites The Dust David Bowie - Rebel Rebel - Space Oddity - The Man Who Sold The World - Ziggy Stardust Queen and David Bowie - Under Pressure Asia - Heat of the Moment Steve Vai - For The Love Of God The Doors - Light My Fire - Roadhouse Blues - Riders On The Storm - Break On Through (To the Other Side) - People Are Strange - L.A. Unfortunately, that doesn't teach you how to play an instrument.
It teaches you how to copy things. |

There should be a free game like this that would use some kind of tabs instead of a proprietary file format.

No stuff from Fred Frith or Sonic Youth? What a shame!

They have a place to request songs. What would you suggest? (Don't know how likely Fred Frith would be, but I am quite sure Sonic Youth has been requested.)
