Im with these two kings. I find that Big generator contains some very cathcy songs that i enjoy. NOt as much as many of Yes' other albums but i dont mind it all the same.

Nice criticisms, I was afraid I was going to get railed like that. I've actually been quite attached to the tune "open secrets" off of Hold Your Fire for quite a while now... but I didn't want to just have Big Generator and Invisible Touch, because Big would blow away Touch easily... so I wanted to level the playing field a little bit. So yes, I'll grant you that... but I don't know what I'm listening to or talking about? . Thats a little harsh, don't you think? I mean certainly there are good moments to be found on virtually any record made by those three groups, but I'm trying to compare equivalents... all three were made in the mid to late 80s and are pretty low down in the ranks of those bands' discographies. You can't say its totally irrational to be putting HYF on that list, can you?

Even the president of the Genesis fanclub in England at the time thought IT wasn't suited as anything other than a frisbee. I'm sure the band thought that with friends like that,who needs enemies? All of the 70's prog bands turned more or less horrific in the 80's,but none more so than Genesis. After IT,I renounced my former fanship ( there's an interesting new word!) of Genesis,I was just too embarassed to be thought of by anyone as a Genesis fan anymore. "Big Generator" I also thought was horrible and it hasn't exactly improved with age!

Now Rush on the other hand is the sole exception to what I said above. They didn't turn crappy in 80's,in fact I think they went from strength to strength. What Yes and Genesis did was sell their souls to MTV and not change for natural reasons,but for entirely economic reasons. Rush on the other hand changed naturally. If you play "Signals","Grace Under Pressure" and "Power Windows" in succesion,you'll hear that they lead quite inevitably to "Hold Your Fire".

Yes maybe that was harsh and yes I'm saying it was totally irrational to put HYF on the list.  However if that is what you feel about HYF some tells me you are not listening to it correctly.  HYF highlights there symphonic era (what you call 80's) and gets you ready for their best live album "A Show of Hands".  Is it 'cuz it's keyboard heavy.  Peart said they got tired of the norm which was drums, bass, a little mimi-moog and guitar.  Why not this approach to music?  There is a FULL Rush experience within HYF.
