I hope I made this one difficult and painful enough for all of you

I'm going to have to choose Hold Your Fire. Although all three are 80s sellout albums, I think Rush did the best job of working the 80s sound into their music.

Not on your life... thats not just Yes's worst album... but one of the worst ever...

I'd rather be caught dead with Invisible Touch... thank God there's not any electricity on that island...

LoL i know threefates...i think no matter who you vote for its going to be cringe worthy

Well, as there will be no electricity supply to plug in a music system, it wont matter.

I would use the shinniest cd and use it as a reflector to attract attention to my stranded body on this island.

What's supposed to be wrong with "Hold Your Fire"? It's one of my Rush favourites.

I'll take any of them - I just won't bother with anything to play them on.

I know I'm swimming against the tide here, but "Big generator" rocks my boat.

I think it suffers a lot from prejudice and preconceived notions. Musically it's well performed and very enjoyable. "Close to the edge" it ain't, but that doesn't automatically make it unworthy.

I love Hold Your Fire. It's one of the first CDs I bought.

Smile  I'm with Easy. I just don't see why BG is supposedly so gawd-awful bad. As far as "prog meets the 80s," or simply as MUSIC, it is not bad at all.

I tend to judge albums in isolation, as music, first and foremost....

(Thus, I also don't mind I.T, or bands changing their styles over the years.)

You'll see perpetual change....

Sweetnighter

How are you gonna put "Hold your Fire" in a list among "Big Generator" and "Invisible Touch".  I think "Hold Your Fire" is in there because it has an 80's sound and you don't know what you are talking about and don't know what you're listening to (however you did it's your favorite).  If "Hold Your Fire" didn't fly way over your head (granted you listen to lots of GREAT music, I'll give you that one) like an A.F.I. poser listening to CTTE you would certainly hold HYF in a more respected light.

None of the above..

Oh ok, if I have to choose one it would be 'Invisible Touch' I could use it as a frisbee. As there would be no one to throw it back I could accidentally lose it. If I find it again, I'll mould into a bowl shape in the hot sun and use it as an ash tray.

One of mine too. I find it's a really good album. It's not a "sellout" album at all, because Rush always did just what THEY wanted to do.

Ermm I find these bands, and most prog in general, to be much like pizza or sex -- even when it's "bad," it's still pretty good....Tongue

I reserve my most disdainful loathing for popular artistes in other genres like: speed/death/disease/genocide/suicide/patricide/matricide/reg icide me(n)tal, (c)rap, disco & assorted diva dance sh*te, etc....Dead

I'd willingly listen to even (gag) Styx or Starcastle before much of that stuff, but I won't name any individual acts (besides Celine, Christina Aquilera, Marilyn Hanson, Eminem, Slipknot, & that ROOT OF ALL THAT'S WHOLESOME AND EVIL, ABBA!), because I don't want any fights with the diverse membership out there.Stern Smile

Really, to each his own, but PLEASE, try this strychnine first -- it's quicker, and less painful....Wink

Nice criticisms, I was afraid I was going to get railed like that. I've actually been quite attached to the tune "open secrets" off of Hold Your Fire for quite a while now... but I didn't want to just have Big Generator and Invisible Touch, because Big would blow away Touch easily... so I wanted to level the playing field a little bit. So yes, I'll grant you that... but I don't know what I'm listening to or talking about? . Thats a little harsh, don't you think? I mean certainly there are good moments to be found on virtually any record made by those three groups, but I'm trying to compare equivalents... all three were made in the mid to late 80s and are pretty low down in the ranks of those bands' discographies. You can't say its totally irrational to be putting HYF on that list, can you?

Even the president of the Genesis fanclub in England at the time thought IT wasn't suited as anything other than a frisbee. I'm sure the band thought that with friends like that, who needs enemies? All of the 70's prog bands turned more or less horrific in the 80's,but none more so than Genesis. After IT,I renounced my former fanship ( there's an interesting new word!) of Genesis,I was just too embarassed to be thought of by anyone as a Genesis fan anymore. "Big Generator" I also thought was horrible and it hasn't exactly improved with age!

Now Rush on the other hand is the sole exception to what I said above. They didn't turn crappy in 80's,in fact I think they went from strength to strength. What Yes and Genesis did was sell their souls to MTV and not change for natural reasons, but for entirely economic reasons. Rush on the other hand changed naturally. If you play "Signals","Grace Under Pressure" and "Power Windows" in succesion, you'll hear that they lead quite inevitably to "Hold Your Fire".

Yes maybe that was harsh and yes I'm saying it was totally irrational to put HYF on the list.  However if that is what you feel about HYF some tells me you are not listening to it correctly.  HYF highlights there symphonic era (what you call 80's) and gets you ready for their best live album "A Show of Hands".  Is it 'cuz it's keyboard heavy.  Peart said they got tired of the norm which was drums, bass, a little mimi-moog and guitar.  Why not this approach to music?  There is a FULL Rush experience within HYF.
