Just curious as to how many musicians, prog or otherwise, that you know of, who are Freemasons? I cam across Rick Wakeman in some pictures from the Chelsea Lodge in London.

Pete Townshend was shocked when Freemasons turned up at John Entwistle's funeral as it turned out John had been a Freemason for ages without any of the other band knowing.
Also Chas Smyth, the songwriter and dancer for Madness has been reported to being a Freemason.

Did not know that about Rick Wakeman though! So that's why he's the BBC go to guy for presenting documentaries about 70's music!

His dad, Cyril Wakeman, was a businessman in London. I dare say he got into it through family connections.

yes he was. actually his opera "Die Zauberflöte" ("The Magic Flute") is all about freemasonry, right from the very first notes of the overture.

Joseph Haydn was a mason as well, in the same lodge as Mozart

i know Roland Orzabal in Tears for Fears is influenced by masonic philosophy and spirituology and its featured on Tears for Fears third album, but i don`t know if he is masonist

this is a Freemason concept album sorta

What's the deal with this?  Seems like a rather creepy "secret society" thing to me.  And too close to religion (cult?).

I was invited an event a local lodge about ten years ago. The father of my girlfriend at the time was a freemason and got her to invite me to the 'ladies night' I made my excuses and declined, having convinced myself I was being sucked into a world of drinking chickens blood and rough orgies with kidnapped drugged local virgins..

I was being foolish of course, but even so I have no desire to have anything to do with secret societies. If something is secret it's secret because someone feels it needs to be hidden. IMO..
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Free Masonery is not a secret society, it's a discreet society: in Paris, they have a museum open to the public, from tuesday to saturday, from 10.00 to 18.00.
Not exactly a dark and elusive sect...

I was asked to join DeMolay (youth version of Masons) when I was a teenager but never went past the first meeting. One of my friends joined the local Masonic lodge  as an adult and told me it was no big deal and he eventually got bored with it.
The 'Illuminati' who did exist at one time (18th century) allegedly infiltrated  Masonic Lodges in Europe and were disbanded by the authorities in Bavaria or Austria..?  This has been written about many times . The conspiracy fans believe they went underground and are still active today and control various orgs like the Bilderbergers , RIIA, CFR, Tri-lateralists, etc.
Some like Jim Marrs believe they essentially control the planet or at least those nations that matter... for a real entertaining read try Rule By Secrecy by Marrs. It's out there but very interesting.

Maybe not there but in Canada it is. All their windows are boarded up or blackened and I know someone who was a part of it and it's no wonder they don't want the public to see their ridiculous traditions.LOL
Every little town here seems to have one of those good old boys clubs and if you leave like my friend did you might as well move out of town(he did) 'cause you are treated as an outcast. They probably fear you will spill the beans on their embarrassing antics. Cute outfits too by the way.

It is a secret society as it operates within government and justice. There is nothing discreet about the nefarious back-room favours among fellow masons.
