Wow!

That's around £22 for 20 ciggies...

Sin tax or reasonable policy..?

Should such increases be applied in the UK and beyond and should enormous tax increases also apply to booze and unhealthy food to force people into better health?

Is it a basic right to be unhealthy, even if the public has to pay for your medical treatment?

Would huge tax hikes simply help the black market get a foothold?

I don't have a problem with someone killing themselves by smoking; it's their choice... but sadly second hand smoke is just as bad.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Even though governments say they want people to give up smoking, the loss of tax revenue if everyone did so would cripple the NHS; smoking revenue benefits the NHS more than we cost same for smoking related diseases.

actually, it's not as bad as first hand smoking.  And this is one issue that's easily solved - smoking has been banned in almost all public places in many countries.

I was saying it's not as deadly as smoking first-hand, but people who smoke make that choice. Smoking in public places is banned so that people who do not choose to smoke can avoid even second-hand smoke. That does not mean that it is the same as smoking.

In my opinion it's unfair that people who smoke aren't allowed to smoke in public places but people who do not smoke are free to not smoke anywhere. If instead we made smoking mandatory in public places it would be equal for everyone.

I would take this up with your local elected representative.
 
Kentucky actually has a law that you cannot discriminate against smokers, as long as they follow all applicable ordinances.  You cannot fire someone because he/she smokes.

 I agree that it should not be allowed in 'public places', but my point was that I  don't care if someone smokes in private or out of doors in  open spaces  where it won't affect others. We have so much pollution now from industry and cars that you're more likely to be affected from that.
