Well...there are many kinds of dirt. Wink
But I knew what she meant and I agree. People I know used to say that the Stones would sound better if their earlier stuff wasn't so dirty sounding . And I always responded that that was their charm and the muddy production sound was what made their rock n roll interesting and their trademark so to speak.
For me the death growl vocals and the chug chug guitar sound are not pleasing to my ear but other types of prog metal especially the more melodic stuff is ok with me.

I agree with ol' man Wu.

I do not like the death growl vocals but at the same time I want the vocals to be as heavy and gritty as possible. To me, there's no place for honey coated vocals in hard rock/metal, even on the ballads.
I also prefer the screaming limited to occasional accent or emphasis.
I never get tired of vocalist like Pepper Keenan from C.O.C./Down or James Hetfield.

Both excellent singers! Clap

I like some prog metal bands, but I agree that it can sound too clean. Prog metal in a sense is like the new hair metal, it loses some of the grit that is part of the listening experience to a heavy band. Imagine a Black Sabbath album or a Slayer album with a squeaky clean production, wouldn't sound too good would it?

I think I feel the same ... it often sounds too technically perfect, as if the smallest inaccuracy was corrected in post production. I wish the sound was more raw and crunchy.

Because the term includes the word "metal." Also, to my ear, there's little subtlety. There's little to recommend it either although I've heard a few standout numbers. I'm sorry. I came up as a teenager during the '70s.
