I dont know King Crimson discography so good, but I do know that I cant understand the low rating to "Starless and Bible Black" and the great rate to "Red" - the two album are so close in musical terms...

Love both, by the way.
- From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

I feel that the reason that the album Red is preferred by most listeners to Starless and Bible Black is that they feel Red was more advanced and forward thinking, anticipating the next phase in the '80s.

My viewpoint is 73-74 was a higher peak than the '80s.

On a tune-to-tune comparison:

I like Fractured better than Red:  It's complexity transports the mind, while red just rocks.

I like The Mincer better than Providence:   The mood of this improv and the applied lyrics....one of a kind!

The updated Starless from the 2014 Tour takes that tune to another level.

I've got about 35 King Crimson albums, of one sort or another, but I can't grade all of them. So I'll do the top few and the bottom few.
1) Red
2) The Night Watch (Live at Amsterdam)
3) The Great Deceiver (4-CD set)
4) USA (30th Anniversary Edition)
5) In the Wake of Poseidon
6) THRAK
7) B'BOOM
8) Absent Lovers (Live in Montreal)
.
.
.
31) Summit Studios, Denver
32) The Construkction of Light
33) The Power to Believe (I don't)
34) Live at the Marquee - 1969
35) Earthbound

'69-74 Crimson is, has been, and always will be the best Crimson of all!
I am one of only about 1,800 people in the world with an original M400 Mellotron!

I'm very traditional  Tongue  I rate them pretty much in order of appearance.
1) in the court
2) In the wake
3 Lizard
4) Islands
5) Larks Tongues, Starless and Bible Black, Red  - pick em

I didn't much listen to the stuff post 1980. I did have "Beat" and didn't like it

Pretty bizarre seeing Scarcity rated so highly. I find it a very different cat to their discography, more like a Crimson influenced Jakko solo album. It's technically not a Crimson record.

No doubt you have a view point that resonates with most people, from reading many reviews of A Scarcity of Miracles.   But to my ears, this album sounds very much like a King Crimson work.   I love the mood this album produces, reminding me very much of songs like Islands, Book of Saturday, Exiles, and the Night Watch while at the very same time, being a different cat altogether....that is exploring an uncharted area of the musical map.  (I bet you find the saxophone texturing distracting, but I feel it adds one more layer of richness and depth.)  Indeed, this is a pretty sounding album, but the tone expresses angst, the lyrics are multi-dimensional and for me create an atmosphere of an Eden-esque landscape during a time when one hell of a storm is approaching, with wind and rain damage foreshadowing the probability of more to come.

Regardless of my opinion Fripp still classifies it as a ProjeKct rather than a full band release.

  2. Islands
  3. In The Wake of Poseidon
  4. Larks' Tongues In Aspic
  5. In The Court of The Crimson King
  6. Red

Least best

I'm not familiar enough with their other studio material to rank it, and I chose not to include any live recordings, either.

I still basically agree with this. I'd move Red up one and the middle bit (TOAPP, ITWOP, and SABB) are more or less interchangeable.

Ranking KC albums is something I find hard to do, in fact I drew a blank, apart from a few exceptions. Generally I find most of them to be 4 star albums with a handful reaching 5 stars. And the 4 star albums would be 5 stars as well, if that handful didn't exist, so it's not a quality- but a comparison thing.

Here are my fivers:

- Lizard
- Islands
- Power to Believe
- Thrak
- Red

Yes, in that order.

Surely, Earthbound is the worst album I ever owned so it'll easily win the "worst" contest.
