Thank God someone else puts Court at the (near) bottom. The issue now is, how low is your bottom?

Three stars:

A consistently very good band. I think their output in the 90's and beyond was better than anything any other classic era prog band released at that time.

In my collection so far:

Red (5/5)
Larks' Tongues In Aspic (5/5)
Absent Lovers (5/5)
In The Court Of The Crimson King (Strong 4/5, weak 5/5)
Islands (4/5)
Lizard (4/5)
In The Wake Of Poseidon (4/5)
Starless And Bible Black (Very strong 3/5, somewhat weak 4/5)

Let's see:

1. In the Court
2. Red
3. Lark's Tongues
4. Lizard
5. Thrak
6. Discipline
7. In the Wake
8. Islands
9. Three of a Perfect Pair
10.Starless
11.Power to Believe
12.Beat
13.Construction of Light
14.Scarcity of Melodies

Only 14 do I truly not like. All of the first 10 I love and 11-13 all have their moments as well. That last one (I know it wasn't officially called a Crimson album, but that's what it was) was a real stinker.

Which one? The Starless And Bible Black one of the ratings as a whole?

For the former, I wasn't too fond of the improvs (outside of "Trio"). For the latter, the ratings were based on the album rating system this site uses.

1. Red
2. Larks’

And then it gets more complicated. The bronze medal could go to Court, Lizard or Discipline. Islands and SaBB come close – they are both solid 4 stars albums in my book. Wake isn’t bad but the trouble is that … well, you know. They sound like their own epigones.

Beat and Three didn’t catch my attention in the same way Discipline did. When Discipline was released, we were all amazed. This was truly progressive rock for the new decade. And though their next albums weren’t bad, they didn’t really bring anything new. At least that’s what I felt at the time, and then I started studying classical music, so I sort of lost track of what Fripp and the gang did later.

1.   Wowsa, I'm shocked no one else has listed SABB at #1! Am I one of the few fans who would put side one as one of the greatest album sides of all time? The sonic attack of "The Great Pretender", winding back down with "Lament", & possibly the greatest guitar piece of all time on "The Night Watch". This was the album you broke out to impress friends with your system. Granted, difficult listening, accessable as a diamond but just as valuable!
2. Lizard was possibly their most accessable record and completely unique with the manic/panic/schitzoid vocals and clever song writing. Again, side one.
3. ITCOTCC would just barely edge
4. Larks Tongues in Aspic, gotta love that "outer limits" atmosphere the thing generates.
5. Red
I also have auditioned most everything else and have clean copies of Discipline, Beat and TOAPP yet rarely find myself wanting to play 'em.    Fripp was a rare genius!

I actually struggle with this, although I'm a moderately big Crimson fan, because I pretty rarely listen to the studio albums. It's all about the live recordings for me, basically. For which we are rather well served! Cool

Having said that, of the 69-74 albums, Larks and Red are tops. Starless, Islands, Court and Lizard after that.

The 80s and onwards albums seem to be in a different category and I find it hard to make comparisons with the earlier groups.

I dont know King Crimson discography so good, but I do know that I cant understand the low rating to "Starless and Bible Black" and the great rate to "Red" - the two album are so close in musical terms...

Love both, by the way.

I feel that the reason that the album Red is preferred by most listeners to Starless and Bible Black is that they feel Red was more advanced and forward thinking, anticipating the next phase in the '80s.

My viewpoint is 73-74 was a higher peak than the '80s.

On a tune-to-tune comparison:

I like Fractured better than Red:  It's complexity transports the mind, while red just rocks.

I like The Mincer better than Providence:   The mood of this improv and the applied lyrics....one of a kind!

The updated Starless from the 2014 Tour takes that tune to another level.

I've got about 35 King Crimson albums, of one sort or another, but I can't grade all of them. So I'll do the top few and the bottom few.
1) Red
2) The Night Watch (Live at Amsterdam)
3) The Great Deceiver (4-CD set)
4) USA (30th Anniversary Edition)
5) In the Wake of Poseidon
6) THRAK
7) B'BOOM
8) Absent Lovers (Live in Montreal)
.
.
.
31) Summit Studios, Denver
32) The Construkction of Light
33) The Power to Believe (I don't)
34) Live at the Marquee - 1969
35) Earthbound

'69-74 Crimson is, has been, and always will be the best Crimson of all!

4) Islands
5) Larks Tongues, Starless and Bible Black, Red  - pick em

Pretty bizarre seeing Scarcity rated so highly. I find it a very different cat to their discography, more like a Crimson influenced Jakko solo album. It's technically not a Crimson record.

No doubt you have a view point that resonates with most people, from reading many reviews of A Scarcity of Miracles.   But to my ears, this album sounds very much like a King Crimson work.   I love the mood this album produces, reminding me very much of songs like Islands, Book of Saturday, Exiles, and the Night Watch while at the very same time, being a different cat altogether....that is exploring an uncharted area of the musical map.  (I bet you find the saxophone texturing distracting, but I feel it adds one more layer of richness and depth.)  Indeed, this is a pretty sounding album, but the tone expresses angst, the lyrics are multi-dimensional and for me create an atmosphere of an Eden-esque landscape during a time when one hell of a storm is approaching, with wind and rain damage foreshadowing the probability of more to come.

Regardless of my opinion Fripp still classifies it as a ProjeKct rather than a full band release.

I still basically agree with this. I'd move Red up one and the middle bit (TOAPP, ITWOP, and SABB) are more or less interchangeable.

Ranking KC albums is something I find hard to do, in fact I drew a blank, apart from a few exceptions. Generally I find most of them to be 4 star albums with a handful reaching 5 stars. And the 4 star albums would be 5 stars as well, if that handful didn't exist, so it's not a quality- but a comparison thing.

Here are my fivers:

- Lizard
- Islands
- Power to Believe
- Thrak
- Red

Yes, in that order.

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I posted an opinion here 3 years ago admitting I rarely listened to the 2nd trilogy (Discipline, Beat, Three Of A Perfect Pair) and am here to report that since then I've come to appreciated those three albums in a huge way. It would seem at the earlier time I was using single full-range drivers (which I love) and I've discovered since then KC calls for large speakers with 2 or three drivers and high-quality crossovers. It would seem compression sets in otherwise and muddles the sound.
Yes, accessibility is not a factor when one is served up such dazzling musicianship. At this point I consider all three equal and each complementing the other two. I understand the Chapman Stick will put off some(Evoking memories of 'Seinfeld") but one person's wart could be a beauty mark to others.
Buford's 'batterie' here shows he did indeed evolve and mounted the summit reserved for the finest world-class drummers of any genre. Likewise der Frippmeister could not have played his instrument any better. Though not quite as good as that 1st trilogy I'm very pleased overall and fortunate to have re-explored the KC cannon.

I'll rate only the albums that I've listened to from start to finish.

1.Lark's Tongue In Aspic 20/20
2.Lizard 20/20 (Could easily be in #1 but decided to put it second due to the fact that I listen to LTIA more)
3.Red 19/20
4.Islands 18/20
5.In the Court of the Crimson King 18/20 (I didn't enjoy I Talk to the Wind even though all the others were         amazing. Even more than many songs above this but due to this fact I had to rate it down)
6.In the Wake of Poseidon 17/20

Interesting!  TOAPP as the second best KC album and ITCOTCK as the second worst.
I guess everyone's taste is different, but I think your ranking would be considered "non-standard".
I agree with you that Discipline is a great album though, and great to see Beat ranked higher than some others on this site would rank it.

I enjoy prog but, to be quite honest, I've fallen out of love with the type of bombast you might get out of symphonic prog records that you'd find on the Greg Lake era. I think a lot of ITCOTCK is a bit dated. Influential, important and essential yes. But just for me I find it in 2019 to be a bit... well... silly.

I enjoy prog with more modernity (it is in the genre's name after all) and a more current political and social consciousness as well as a more pop and rhythm based aesthetic.
