On of the best bass player has passed away. This is such sad moment for me I can't express it in any possible way. Thanks for a lot of great music and R.I.P. :-((

I suppose I don't have the adequate words what Chris Squire and Yes have meant to me for the past 25+ years - the Fragile album awakened something in me, it was the first music I really fell in love with. He was one of the greatest to ever play bass guitar and he left an indelible mark on progressive rock and rock music in general. Thoughts and positive energy to his family.

"Don't doubt the fact that there's life within you,
yesterday's endings will tomorrow's life give you, all that dies, dies for a reason, to put its strength into the Season, Survival, Survival" Yes, "Survival" (1969) Out of context, yet somehow fitting |

Yes was a huge part of my life when I began playing bass back in '77 and Squire was always an inspiration and an example of someone who totally mastered his instrument. We've lost one of, if not the greatest bass player in history

This article says: Squire's death makes Alan White, who joined Yes in 1972, the longest-tenured member, according to Ultimate Classic Rock. They are mistaken, Steve Howe predates White!

Incredibly sad... I genuinely feel empty and deeply melancholic. The big man has passed on and it's so depressing to know I'll never hear anything new from him, or see him again on stage. Yes have always been there and Chris and Jon seemed like the immortals who would survive all the changes and obstacles they came up against. Didn't think Jon would outlast him. God, what memories....I played 'The Yes Album' on my very first day at University, as I unpacked at my hall of residence, after seeing off the parents. 'Yours is No Disgrace' still holds those memories every time I hear Chris's huge bass notes! Hearing 'Hold Out Your Hand' for the first time at a friends' party. Watching 'Yessongs' at the local cinema on a one-off late night showing. Playing my bootlegged BBC recording of Yes's October 28th 1978 on my battered cassette player as I revised for my A 'Levels! Making 'Run with the Fox' a must on my Christmas selection tape. Numerous concerts watching the great man bounce and jump about the stage in flowing coats. The 'Fish' solos.....the start of 'On the Silent Wings of Freedom', the bass line on 'Parallels', the underlying control he gave to 'Heart of the Sunrise' etc...etc... Thank you Chris for supplying the soundtrack to so many good parts of my life. RIP

Steve Howe does, indeed, predate White, Charles, but White has not left the band since joining, whereas Howe had a fairly lengthy couple of sulks out of the band. White is, thus, the longest tenured member. Whilst this news is appallingly sad, I take a great deal of heart and love from the incredible tributes that have been paid to him these last couple of days. The news has made all of the major news outlets, testament, I think, to the massive influence Chris Squire had on the music world as a whole, not just our little progressive corner of it. |

Yes world has a growing list of tributes, this is worth glancing at! Steve Hackett, Adrian Belew and others pay homage.
p.s. Thanks for pointing out the "longest tenure" aspect of White! I tend to forget Howe's stint in Asia for some reason!

^Wonderful tributes, Charles. Thanks for posting them.
I'm surprised with how Squire's death has hit me today. Perhaps it's a case too many icons passing away recently. Sort of like seeing all of your old school friends pass away. A very tough day for me, so thanks again for posting these tributes. I truly appreciate it.

This isn't the most pertinent thing to raise here, but was anyone else genuinely surprised to learn that Geddy Lee and Chris Squire never met?

You are very welcome regarding the Yes World tributes! I see that more tributes are being constantly added, so keep an eye on that link. I'm at peace with his passing...we've lost so many good friends recently. I'm glad he didn't linger on in pain and misery. RIP, Christopher Squire, and thanks for the many bass lessons you gave to me!
