After Geddy he was the first bass player I had heard who was very upfront in the mix and a huge part of a band's sound. I still think of Fragile when I hear Squire's name. He was a huge influence on Geddy and so many other bass players.
I mentioned on another site that i'm sure Geddy will mention Chris at their show in New York City tomorrow night. I was at the Toronto show by Rush in 2003 and Geddy dedicated a song to Entwhistle who had just passed back then.
Such sad news.

I'll never forget hearing Fragile for the first time, when I was in high school. It was the bass guitar that drew me into this music - this entire genre of music. It was so different than the music I was familiar with.
Thanks for all the great music, Chris. And thanks also for the other things - the excitement of tracking down cheap Yes LPs in the used record stores of Amherst, Massachusetts; the thrill of attending Yes concerts; the friends I've made over Yes music. You'll be missed.
RIP

From the band....by the way does anyone know the date/location of his last show?
It’s
with the heaviest of hearts and unbearable sadness that we must inform
you of the passing of our dear friend and Yes co-founder, Chris Squire.
Chris peacefully passed away last night in Phoenix Arizona.
For
the entirety of Yes’ existence, Chris was the band’s linchpin and, in so
many ways, the glue that held it together over all these years. Because
of his phenomenal bass-playing prowess, Chris influenced countless
bassists around the world, including many of today’s well-known
artists. Chris was also a fantastic songwriter, having written and
co-written much of Yes’ most endearing music, as well as his solo album,
Fish Out of Water.
Outside
of Yes, Chris was a loving h usband to Scotty and father to Carmen,
Chandrika, Camille, Cameron, and Xilan. With his gentle, easy-going
nature, Chris was a great friend of many … including each of us. But he
wasn’t merely our friend: he was also part of our family and we shall
forever love and miss him.

I really couldn't believe this when I heard it - such an innovative and important bass player who influenced many progressive and non-progressive artists. If it weren't for him, I can't imagine Yes being quite so adventurous, as he was something of a driving force in the band, and those seminal records like "Close To The Edge" and "Fragile" introduced me to progressive music, more so than even King Crimson, Pink Floyd, or Genesis at the time. I'm so glad I managed to see Yes with him while I still could last year, and I feel he's one of those musicians whose death I won't ever truly get over. I'm sure I'll be listening to a lot of Yes in the coming weeks - Rest in peace Chris.

Anyway, thanks to this I will now feel down and out for the rest of the day now knowing of this passing. Chris is definitely a part of the Yes sound, and a part of the reason why I adore these guys so much!!! Despite that, I WILL STILL continue to support the band even with its many lineup changes. My feelings are like I lost a close person. Chris Squire has been one of my biggest musical heroes, from the age of 11 (I am 29 now). He lead me through fairy tale-like perception of music in my childhood, with his emotional bass/vocals in otherworldly pieces like Starship Trooper, Ritual or Safe - Canon Song and many many others. Later, becoming musician myself, I developed endless "rational" admiration for his musicianship. He has been a part of some of most precious moments thanks to his music. Despite my affection for Jon Anderson and others, I feel he was the heart of Yes.

R.I.P Chris, one of the most inventive and influential musicians in the progressive music genre, who completely changed the way the instrument could be played. I was lucky to see him perform live several times here in Australia, and despite the band getting on in years, Chris' bass playing was as grumbling, thick and dynamic as always. I love this photo I took of him at Yes' show in Melbourne last year, he looked like the damn Lion King to me, and he was a king amongst progressive musicians!

This is also the WORST news of the year. Now a mountain has returned to the sky from which he came. Today, there is thunder in western Washington state. Perhaps it is Chris giving us a fond farewell; the man knew the nature of thunder. Condolences to family, friends, and fans.

Squire was a towering influence on not just progressive rock, but also rock music as a whole. I can only think of Entwistle as a bass player of equal stature.
Squire spent many years putting music to the spiritual musings of Jon Anderson. He is now in heaven, living the endless dream.

I know today isn't the time and place for that discussion, not here, and surely not with however is running Yes now. I think reason will prevail and they will call it a day.. or possibly.. if possible considering their various healths and schedules.. we might see a final tour.. the original classics (Anderson, Wakeman, Bruford, Howe) team up the ultimate bassist for hire. Levin. And do a final tour in Squires memory..and a final chapter for the band. Perhaps dreaming.. but I'd actually go see that. To honor him, and the band.

One of the true masters.
Without the likes of him, a site like this would look much, much different.
Such an innovative, powerful performer, and, lest we forget, an astonishing harmonist.
Have to say that his solo album has long been of deep value to me. The CD carousel has already been filled, and will be filled, with Yes today, but Fish's album will get a few spins as well.

What a shame. One of the true masters and leaders of progressive rock and his signature bass sounds will echo throughout the future.
RIP to one of the greats.

Agree 100% the worse thing they could do is carry on....they should call a day--your idea of ABWH is amazing with Levin--that would be a dream come true--or even Howe or ANderson touring randomly with a great prog band---which they have both done--just don't call it Yes.

RIP to a great bass player
------------- All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I wouldnt be surprised if something like that does happen.. he and his bass were the foundation of the sound of THE band.. why they were able to, could, and did replace everyone else over the bands lifespan...not to mention the first real giant of prog we have lost. Really only Fripp and Emerson compare for what they meant to the genre, not just their groups.
