Unbelievably crazy sad news.....It's insane to think Chris is gone. Prayers and thoughts to his family....

I got to meet Chris twice. He was a very nice guy. I am proud that I not only have had the pleasure of listening to his music for years and years now, but also the honor of meeting him in person and getting the chance to tell him how much his music meant to me. Pink Floyd and Rush were my "training" progressive rock bands. When I first Yes, that's why the wide world of progressive rock fully opened up for me, and my journey truly began. It was like an awakening, as I'd never heard a band that was so dynamic, so melodic, and so damn tight! My heart is very heavy today.  With the way Yes have been operating for the past 7 or so years, I wouldn't be surprised if they continued without him. Apparently they are still going to do the Toto tour this summer, probably because they are contractually obligated, but beyond that, who knows. Chris Squire and Jon Anderson are Yes. Steve Howe and Alan White should lay it to rest

Not good, not good at all but thanks for what he gave us. What a great life he must have had. The cornerstone of one of the giants. Would that I could have achieved a tenth as much. Yet he seemingly remained a nice chap.

Just heard the news. It's a huge shame - I hadn't heard about his illness but it seems to have overtaken him awfully suddenly.
As odd as it seems to talk about a band in the wake of a human being's passing, it feels impossible not to speculate about what will happen to Yes at this point since Squire and Yes were integral parts of each other for so long. I agree with those who've said that it's high time Yes took a serious look at putting the "Yes" brand to bed for good.
A final tribute concert or mini-tour might be appropriate, but I don't think any of us would welcome the idea of a Yes studio album without Chris on bass. His bass technique was so individual to him and such an essential component of the Yes sound that if you took it away it wouldn't feel like Yes music any more, and if you tried to get someone to play in a comparable style it'd feel like an impersonator or a tribute band rather than the real deal.
The best idea I've heard so far on this thread is micky's: get the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe lineup back together, call in Tony Levin, and do one more round of "Evenings of Yes Music" in honour of Chris before drawing a line under the whole deal. Chris should be sung out with music - preferably his music - but if Yes keeps chugging on without him it will increasingly resemble the proverbial axe that's had its handle replace three times and its head replaced five times. I've never known a band that's undergone that level of personnel churn that hasn't ended up resembling the butt of a joke more than whatever they represented in their glory days. Let the elders enjoy a few final rounds of solo tours before the sun sets on their careers, and let the younger musicians go and carve out their own musical destiny rather than living in the shadow of their forebears. |

I came across the news right before leaving my house for dinner this evening; I'm still at a loss for words.
I was quite literally playing "Heart of The Sunrise" on bass (the intro riff is my daily warm up, and I was considering doing a cover this week for YouTube), put my bass away, checked my FB real quick, and that was the first thing on my feed...
I had a long conversation with my father after dinner, whom got to see YES in 1972 on the CTtE tour, front row, center stage. He got to chat with the roadies for a bit, and has been a YES fan since they debuted. Words cannot describe how devastated I am to learn my single-most favorite prog musician of all time has passed.
THE reason I picked up the bass was this man. He's influenced everything for me. Innovative is a common term used to describe him, but I feel like we can't even truly language how magical this man was.
On to The Heart of The Sunrise...
RIP Chris Squire.

The above quote is a wonderful testament to Chris & YES' multi-generational legacy. I personally believe
that YES music will go on forever thrilling each new generation that breaks out into the world.
For me, I was absolutely spellbound by YES in 1975 with the first prog LP I bought: "Yes - Yesterdays".
I quickly bought all the classic YES and have been enchanted, enriched & enlightened ever since.
RIP Christopher Squire. You are loved and will be dearly missed.
The world is now a lesser place with you gone.

Oh, what an incredible loss, and what a massive contribution he made to all of music, not just rock. Chris what will we do without you-- In effect, Yes is over. He, in many many ways, was the band.

Holy Crap! I just heard about his health issues about two or three weeks ago. While I know by the sounds of whathe wass struggling with he would most likely not survive, I had no idea it would take him this quick.
RIP Chris, the world of music is a much thinner world without you in it.

I am shocked and saddened at his death. He was truly legendary. Roundabout is my warm-up on bass, and he was one of my biggest musical heroes and inspirations. I almost saw him live twice, just missing out, and now I never will. If angels could make music, they would sound like Yes.
