I'll never forget hearing Fragile for the first time, when I was in high school. It was the bass guitar that drew me into this music - this entire genre of music. It was so different than the music I was familiar with.
Thanks for all the great music, Chris. And thanks also for the other things - the excitement of tracking down cheap Yes LPs in the used record stores of Amherst, Massachusetts; the thrill of attending Yes concerts; the friends I've made over Yes music. You'll be missed. RIP |

Thank you for all the music, Chris: now you live in the North side of the sky, beyond the wheel of perpetual change.

RIP This is terrible news, Yes was one of my favorite bands at one point, one of the early favorites of the progressive rock genre.

Today we've lost an irreplaceable part of music's history. Few players could play with as much passion and drive as he, and he was absolutely essential in the Yes sound, a band that we all hold close and dear. He will be missed. RIP.

Very, very sad news. I first saw Yes in 1971 at Gaelic Park in Bronx, NY and was immediately amazed. Squire's playing and sound was a tremendous contributor to the success of the group. May he Rest In Peace.

From the band....by the way does anyone know the date/location of his last show?
It’s with the heaviest of hearts and unbearable sadness that we must inform you of the passing of our dear friend and Yes co-founder, Chris Squire. Chris peacefully passed away last night in Phoenix Arizona. For the entirety of Yes’ existence, Chris was the band’s linchpin and, in so many ways, the glue that held it together over all these years. Because of his phenomenal bass-playing prowess, Chris influenced countless bassists around the world, including many of today’s well-known artists. Chris was also a fantastic songwriter, having written and co-written much of Yes’ most endearing music, as well as his solo album, Fish Out of Water. Outside of Yes, Chris was a loving h usband to Scotty and father to Carmen, Chandrika, Camille, Cameron, and Xilan. With his gentle, easy-going nature, Chris was a great friend of many … including each of us. But he wasn’t merely our friend: he was also part of our family and we shall forever love and miss him. |

I really couldn't believe this when I heard it - such an innovative and important bass player who influenced many progressive and non-progressive artists. If it weren't for him, I can't imagine Yes being quite so adventurous, as he was something of a driving force in the band, and those seminal records like "Close To The Edge" and "Fragile" introduced me to progressive music, more so than even King Crimson, Pink Floyd, or Genesis at the time. I'm so glad I managed to see Yes with him while I still could last year, and I feel he's one of those musicians whose death I won't ever truly get over. I'm sure I'll be listening to a lot of Yes in the coming weeks - Rest in peace Chris.
