I choose DARK MATTER - But I haven't heard ANY of the others that have been listed......How many CD's do some of you buy !!!!! And how do you get time to listen to them thoroughly ??

My favorite Cave's album since THE GOOD SON (the most favorite!) is THE BOATMAN'S CALL. THE MURDER BALLADS is on my second half...

That will be my choice- thanks for reminding me! I never really liked Marillion (until I heard "Ocean Cloud", that is) so choosing them for album of the year appeals to the prankster in me.

Ayeron seems to be quite popular, eh? Is "The Human Equation" better than "The Dream Sequencer"?

Actually,I was also very impressed by the album "Once" by the Finnish band Nightwish. Their earlier albums are ok but this time they've come up with a true masterpiece in the symphonic metal genre. Great songwriting and surprisingly intelligent lyrics,tremendous production with a huge wall of sound,fabulous musicianship,a singer with a classically trained voice that blows the competition off stage (and out of the studio,presumably

),fantastic vocal arrangements with a big choir and amazing orchestral arrangements make this an album that will stand as a benchmark for this type of music for many years to come,I'm sure. Something to aspire to for other bands in the genre,although I doubt if any one of them will manage the heights of excellence that Nightwish have attained with this one. If you're unfamiliar with Nightwish,give "Once" a try.

Matthew Parmenter's Astray.

I can't believe I forgot it. Astray is a great album. Easily top three.

Blackfield should be in the top ten.

Marbles? Top 25-30 with a bullet.

Personally I think 2004 has not been a vintage year for new prog and if come to that any of the other genre I really like. From what I've heard,of th straighter prog IQ Dark Matter stands above a mediocre lot. Unicorn Records released a couple of metal come jazz rock albums earlier in the year: Uptight and Alkemy's Da 64 Project. British indie label Burning Shed continue to be eclectic with their range of releases. Occasional Steve Wilson collaborator Tim Bowness's My Hotel Year was one of my records of the month (as was Alkemy), similarly Hugh Hopper's The Stolen Hour. Cuneiform Records similarly offered an eclectic and often musically challenging list of records through 2004, of which Richard Leo Johnson's Trio's Applicance of Poetry (in suggesting electric folk instrumentals, doesn't cover the complexity of many of the tunes???), has been a real favourite taking some time to grow on me. Also found Univers Zero's Implosion and Daevid Allen's Univerity of Errors' Jet Propelled Photograph to bepretty good.

By a landslide. It's more varied in styles, the concept is better, the compositions are more interesting, the vocalists featured are better, and it's really just way better in every way. If The Dream Sequencer was your introduction to Ayreon, I'm sorry for you.

Regarding Delirium Cordia, it's a good album, but I'd consider it the weakest Fantomas album yet. It seems they're starting to forsake listenability in favour of pure experimentalism. It's in my top 20, but far from one of the best.

And regarding Marbles, it's a very good album, and certainly in my top 10, but it has too many weak moments for me to really consider it worthy of being one of the best. Ocean Cloud and Neverland are both fantastic though.

Id have to say Ayreon but im sure there must be better this year.

Glad to see Evergrey got a mention, Great band.

Not to keen on Nightwish i brought one of there "best of" albums "tales from the elven path" and the women who sings just annoys me. I was also really disapointed with the extras, a crappy 2 page booklet with advertising for their ohter albums.
