I have to agree.

1. Riverside!

2. Happy the Man - The Muse Awakes

3. Salem Hill - Be (It may be 2003, but very late 2003.)

Dark Matter? Surely in the top 12-25.

It would have been better to have a poll of 20 choices of 2004 releases. I can't remember what came out this year, CRS for old proggers trying to act kool.

I don't know much new releases myself, I wanted to make it a pole initialy, but was afraid to leave some essentials out, this way everything can be added, I can alway's calculate the outcome afterwards.

One of the reasons I started this, was to learn about good releases I did not know about anyway.

Of the few I've heard, "The Human Equation" (Ayreon), "One" (Neal Morse), and "Out of Myself" (Riverside). Sorry to repeat, but they're gooooooood.

now then: the best album of 2005? i vote for spock's beard's upcoming "octane". It'd better be good. (preview at their website)

Without a shadow of a doubt, the best album of 2004 is Ayreon's The Human Equation.

As for 2005, I'd say the best will probably end up being Porcupine Tree's Deadwing or The Mars Volta's Frances the Mute.

That will be my choice- thanks for reminding me! I never really liked Marillion (until I heard "Ocean Cloud", that is) so choosing them for album of the year appeals to the prankster in me.

Ayeron seems to be quite popular, eh? Is "The Human Equation" better than "The Dream Sequencer"?

Actually,I was also very impressed by the album "Once" by the Finnish band Nightwish. Their earlier albums are ok but this time they've come up with a true masterpiece in the symphonic metal genre. Great songwriting and surprisingly intelligent lyrics, tremendous production with a huge wall of sound, fabulous musicianship,a singer with a classically trained voice that blows the competition off stage (and out of the studio, presumably),fantastic vocal arrangements with a big choir and amazing orchestral arrangements make this an album that will stand as a benchmark for this type of music for many years to come,I'm sure. Something to aspire to for other bands in the genre, although I doubt if any one of them will manage the heights of excellence that Nightwish have attained with this one. If you're unfamiliar with Nightwish, give "Once" a try.

Matthew Parmenter's Astray.

I can't believe I forgot it. Astray is a great album. Easily top three.

Blackfield should be in the top ten.

Marbles? Top 25-30 with a bullet.

Personally I think 2004 has not been a vintage year for new prog and if come to that any of the other genre I really like. From what I've heard,of th straighter prog  IQ Dark Matter stands above a mediocre lot.  Unicorn Records released a couple of metal come jazz rock albums earlier in the year: Uptight and Alkemy's Da 64 Project. British indie label Burning Shed  continue to be eclectic with their range of releases. Occasional Steve Wilson collaborator Tim Bowness's My Hotel Year was one of my records of the month (as was Alkemy), similarly Hugh Hopper's The Stolen Hour. Cuneiform Records similarly offered an eclectic and often musically challenging list of records through 2004, of which Richard Leo Johnson's Trio's Applicance of Poetry (in suggesting electric folk instrumentals, doesn't cover the complexity of many of the tunes???), has been a real favourite taking some time to grow on me.  Also found Univers Zero's Implosion and Daevid Allen's Univerity of Errors' Jet Propelled Photograph to bepretty good.

By a landslide.  It's more varied in styles, the concept is better, the compositions are more interesting, the vocalists featured are better, and it's really just way better in every way.  If The Dream Sequencer was your introduction to Ayreon, I'm sorry for you.

Regarding Delirium Cordia, it's a good album, but I'd consider it the weakest Fantomas album yet.  It seems they're starting to forsake listenability in favour of pure experimentalism.  It's in my top 20, but far from one of the best.

And regarding Marbles, it's a very good album, and certainly in my top 10, but it has too many weak moments for me to really consider it worthy of being one of the best.  Ocean Cloud and Neverland are both fantastic though.

Dark Matter - IQ     and seeing IQ perform this album back in October was the high light of my year!

Pain Of Salvation - Be

I didn't even know they had a "Best of" album and anyway they are rather disparaging about some of their earlier stuff these days. As I said,it's ok but no more,it's "Once" you should check out. that's why I edited it (after searching for the exact meaning of trice), left the remark bad english, for it would be cheating to alter after a response, making the response less valid/more valid.

The vocals are weak admittedly, but there are some spots where they fit in quite well. Brad S. did all the intrumentation and singing for the cd except Parmenter's violin role in one of the songs. Too bad he couldn't have given this guy the lead vocals. Those songs would have sounded great then. Still an unbelievable 1st attempt. I haven't heard anything proggier released this year.

Since Nightwish has been described as Opera Metal there are quite a few who have a problem with the vocals,I know. At times it does sound a lot like Wagner had come back to life and decided to start a metal band.

Unless you've listened to every prog release this year then it's hard to make a judgement - Ands it's subjective yet again - Maybe this forum should contain a profile of each member based on the following categories...

These categories are all from 0 (low) to 100 HIGH

1 - Preference for melody, 2- Preference for dischordant din 3 - Acceptance of concept sounds 4- Preference to 70's prog 5 - Preference for Prog/Metal 6 - Classical preference 7 - Hard rock/Thrash preference 8 - Pop preference 9 - Jazz Preference 10 - Folk preference - Thus giving a good indication what you like....

Alright, here's a more complete list.  I've decided to omit non-prog albums, since no one really cares about them.

10. Valley of the Giants - Valley of the Giants (A supergroup featuring members of Godspeed You Black Emperor, they're not listed on here but they should be.)
9. Rush - Feedback
8. Blackfield - Blackfield
7. Fantomas - Delirium Cordia (As I've said over and over again, I think it counts)
6. Therion - Lemuria
5. Marillion - Marbles
4. Paatos - Kallocain
3. Riverside - Out of Myself
2. Dead Soul Tribe - The January Tree

Prog album of the year for me was '5 Suns' by GUAPO. Gig of the year as well.

Other groovy stuff - 'Le Pas Du Chat Noir' by Anouar Brahem and 'Electric Sufi' by Dhafer Youssef.

Strong offerings also from Nick Cave, Elvis Costello and Morrisey.

Not a vintage year, but looking back not bad at all.
