About my favorite non-prog bands...well, too many to mention...
- jazz: Joshua Redman (amazing sax player), Bojan Z (great pianist from eastern Europe) and Thelonious Monk
- blues: SRV, Gary Moore (blues era)
- rock: Toto, Queen, Hendrix, Dire Straits...
- metal: old Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Symphony X, Nightwish, Steve Vai, Angra
- french singers/groups: Jacques Brel, Alexis HK, Noir Désir, Louise Attaque
- others: some disco music (yes, and I'm not ashamed!), and about everything good

Great shredding is cheddar cheese on a taco (Ron Thal).

I can't hear all those stuffs made by (and for) young extremists & schizo...moreover I can't consider this sh*t as music or art...those bands make me want to throw up.

Don't be ridiculus.. Really.. I appreciate forgotten tomb maybe more then some prog.. And I know that it is just an opinion, YOURS.. Go and listen to it before you can judge it.. And eventhough you don't like it.. you can still say it on an normal way.. because I think this way is just offending me, and you meant it this way..

But these ones are not the best IMO. Apart from prog metal, I think that the "oldies" (Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden...) are the best ones.

A ton of stuff for me:
Black Sabbath (Ozzy years, it just wasn't Sabbath without Ozzy)
Cream
Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Albert Freddie & BB King
Allman Bros.
Steve Winwood's last album "About Time" is killer, best thing he's done since Traffic (not a note of cheeesy pop music on this thing!)
Tower of Power
Prong
Helmet
James Brown
Otis Redding
Ray Charles
Frank Sinatra
Tony Bennett
Santana
Blue Oyster Cult
lots of classical music like Bach, Ludwig Von, Ravel, Debussy, Stravinsky, Mussorgsky et al. (can't stand Mozart though, way too sugary for me)
a lot of jazz, swing, jump blues like Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner etc.
Tito Puente'
And House music (specifically the jazz-house and deep-house)

I enjoy a lot of music that isnt prog, theres this one reggae album that i heard and forgot the name, and i havent heard it since. disheartening. But my all time favourite non-prog artist is Tom Waits, awesome.
