Plenty!

Dylan, The Band

Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn, Bruce Springsteen, Richard Thompson, Roy Harper.

Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, U2...

Springsteen is probably my favourite rock performer of all time. If you get the chance to hear any boots from his tour of 1978 don't hesitate. The perfect combination of folk, rock, jazz and (yes) prog. Just listen to what they did with "Prove It All Night" on that tour. Perfection.

Apart from the prog genre, I like many different kinds of music :

Jazz with world elements : Jan Garbarek, one of the most gifted saxophonist I know/ Pat Metheny and his subtile guitar phrase

Folk : Richie Havens and his strong voice

AOR : TOTO

Vocal jazz : Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan

Post-rock : the last Björk, Vespertine, a blend of ethereal music with sublime orchestrations and grandiose vocals, harp and discreet music boxes

The Grateful dead : Terrapin' station is a true masterpiece

Contemporary classical music : Claus Ogermann, Two concertos, a sublime record / Henryk Gorecki, Symphony n°3, a dark masterpiece / Zbigniew Preisner, Requiem for my friend, another sublime record / Wojciech Kilar, Warsaw to Hollywood (excellent film scores) / Mark O'Connor ( violonist for Dixie Dregs on 'Industry standard), Fanfare for the volunteer, sublime music for violin and orchestra / John Williams, music from Saving private Ryan (truly poignant) / Georges Enesco / Charles Koechlin, Oeuvres pour hautbois (one of the finest work for oboe ever produced)

Polish pop  (I am a native of Poland) : Czeslaw Niemen, Marek Grechuta

Mainstream rock with a touch of proginess : Kevin Gilbert

Stoner : Led Zeppelin, II, their best to my mind

Shredders : Steve Vai, Passion and warfare, an absolute masterpiece / Eric Johnson, one of my favourite guitarists / Jeff Beck, There & back, his best record / Steve Morse, the best guitarist in the world

That's all folks!!

HMMMM: for me it would be..Led Zep...Deep Purple,Tool(dont like their bizarre filmclips though..even though they are in tune with the songs feel and sentiments...go figure) as a pianist i also enjoy classical piano works especially early 20th century composers such as bartok et al who started to inject more prominent jazz and blues chording and frasing into the traditional classical context

Well there's plenty of bands I like, but one stands out from all the rest...

Yes, the holy of holies... The best band of all time, one of those once in a lifetime bands that I will be remembering in forty years time...

> Tool

They are absolutely the best band out there... (in my opinion)

Originally posted by dude dude wrote:

What the? Their video clips are the best film clips out there... The interesting use of stop-motion animation by whichever one of the band members it is who makes them, Danny I think, is just another aspect of the depth and quality of Tool...

A band that produces art, not music... I just can't say enough about them...

Most all of the bands I love are prog but other than that I like electronic music :

like Jean Michel Jarre , Klause Schlze ( imagine Pinkfloyd or Alan Parsons no vocals and only synths) obviously Alan  Parsons.

Led Zep is also fun

Oregon was a great band, their seventies stuff is beautiful...I've got about 50 ECM vinyls, lota of great stuff there, Garbarek on a bunch of them...and Britsh folk music, just awesome...I became addicted to a Sandy Denny collection for quite a while too, imo easily the best female singer ever...ok, singer period, what expression.

Geez..

Outside of Prog I like everything from Sarah McLachlan to Stevie Ray Vaughn to Brother Cane to The Rippingtons (if you get the chance to see them live don't pass it up) to Led Zep.

It would probably take less time to list the acts that I don't like, though that list gets longer every day.

Yes Dude, the biggest "hit" that Steeleye Span ever had was in fact "All Around my Hat," from the excellent (1975) album of the same name. Other great Steeleye titles include their essential first (1970) album, "Hark! the Village Wait," 75's "Commoners Crown," 86's comeback masterpiece "Back in Line," 89's harder-rocking "Tempted and Tried," and 96's "Time." The band's music is traditionally-based, with heavy rock overtones (drums, bass, and great electric guitar figure largely in their sound). For me , a liking for prog, and many of its softer, more beautiful moments (as in old Genesis or PFM) logically led me to this type of music (plus, like you, I'm from a former British colony with a strong seafaring past and a vital Irish subculture).

I have 12 Steeleye Span discs in total (& really like them all!), and over 200 traditional/Celtic discs (not counting numerous MP3s) altogether (more than I have of Prog!), including one by WEDDINGS PARTIES ANYTHING (saw them live: Great!) from Australia. I really love the life-affirming beauty, power, and soul-stirring poetry of "trad." Check out some "Span" soon!

Thumbs Up I too have & LOVE Trower's BRIDGE OF SIGHS. The title track is awesome, and so is the immortal "Too Rolling Stoned," one of my favourite songs!

This is one thing which has bothered me over the years - Robin Trower is one of the great unsung heroes of the guitar, but just because he has chosen in the past to use the same feel/sound as Hendrix, he gets labelled as a copyist.

Nobody seems to have the same problem with the leagues of guitarists who over the years have copied Tony Iommi (another vastly under-rated guitarist); nobody complains that Clapton is a little derivative of past greats in his (undoubtedly great) blues works.

What is it about Hendrix that makes people so protective of his sound........?

jim:good point!! it seems that when you reach the status of rock icon you become untouchable(here is a PERSONAL opinion, i have never held the likes of Van Morrisson or BB King in the same awe as they are in the rock world (just a tad overrated!!)) but as for Hendrix yes, he was probably the biggest single influence on rock guitar in history but from him others have fashioned their own sound and creativity.Sure Hendrix did Purple Rain voodoo child,Machine gun etc but Trower did the superb "bridge of Sighs" "Too rolling Stoned" etc Are they any less songs and musical compositions because they were not done by Hendrix? what do you think???

My all time favorite band are Deep Purple. A band I am really into now are a British band called Mostly Autumn. They are a cross between, Purple and pink Floyd, with a bit of Folk thrown in. They are a 7 piece with an absolutely stunning singer (Heather Findlay). Just musically a fantastic group.

I also love Mostly Autumn. I have a question: it seems that Classic Rock is trying seriously to promote it (lots of DVDs and live CDs, etc). Are they getting media attention in the UK?

I'm with you on this one, Mostly Autumn are a superb band & if the sampler of their new album (given away free with this month's 'Classic Rock') is anything to go by, this will be well worth the money.

Also I cannot believe I missed this band in my earlier posting - the absolutely wonderful Allman Brothers were a band full of astounding musicians; a tragic loss when Duane Allman was killed @ 24 years old

As mentioned above, they have a sampler in this months Classic rock magazine. I think some of the fans from Mostly Autumns web site are trying to promote the band by giving out flyers etc at other concerts and e-mailing radio stations but as for the press, well, I suppose MA full into the unfashionable music section and like most bands within this genre, don't really get noticed by the media.

Pfff... hard to say...

I think some stuff from 'Sad Wings Of Destiny' + 'Beyond The Realms Of Death' may be called prog, but most of the seventies-Priest music is 'just' high-quality heavy metal! Judas Priest, for me, is the ultimate crossover between Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, with a great singer. The first three eighties albums are ok, but the rest is kind of crappy... I thought 'Jugulator was a fine comeback, it sounded a little like Metallica or Megadeth. But I'll say it again: if you want superb heavy metal, check out seventies Judas Priest!

If you want a best of.....then Catch The Spirit is a good double cd to have, though it doesn,t include anything from their latest album, Passengers.

My personal favorite is The Last Bright Light. This one just about captures everything about the band. Honestly, there is not one track on there that I dislike.

I feel the same about the other MA albums though....I think they are that good.

Passengers, their latest album has a slight change of direction. you can still hear the Floyd influences and I think they have recently produced a new Live album, At The Opera House or something. Other than that, if you want some of their live material, then go for The Story So Far, which is also the title of the live dvd.

Hope that helps

If you cannot get what you want from amazon, try Mostly Autumns own web site. I think they have links in there regarding sales.

Also, try 'Heroes Never Die, The Anthology' - this is a best of compilation, but instead of just raiding the old master tapes, they re-recorded all the tracks; this was the first album of theirs I got & it's a very good starting point.

Alex: I agree with XTC, but think they should be included on the prog site.  I've made my case for this elsewhere...

Gonghobbit: Oregon reigns!  They are among the greatest bands in any genre of any time period.  I have almost everything they ever produced.

Dude, Peter: Sorry, guys, Steeleye Span's biggest hit was "Stuck in the Middle With You," which went to #1 in 6 countries.

Fave non-prog bands for me (not including XTC, 10CC, Babble, and Zappa, who all belong here), in alpha order: Allman Bros., Bowie, Doors, Dylan, Family, Grateful Dead, BJ, EJ, Led Zep, J. Mitchell, Police, Queen, Steely Dan, C. Stevens, U2.

Peter -

Do you have access to my record collection at all???

The Tubes Live album - splendid piece of '70s glitz; recorded at Hammersmith Odeon, London on the one show they played before being banned in London, due to the obscene antics of Quay Lude

Nina Hagen "Ich Glotz TV" I've got the original 7" vinyl single of that somewhere - didn't know she was an opera singer, though......

You appear to have specialist knowledge of my music collection...... you're not living under the bed in our guest room, are you?

Richard/Peter:

Although I didn't actually like them much, I actually saw The Tubes at The Beacon Theater in 1975.  They were the craziest act I'd ever seen - and I'd seen some pretty crazy acts! (including Alex Harvey, Alice Cooper, and others).  Got to have a beer with Quay (or is that "Mr. Lude?"...) after the show.  He was actually a pretty neat, unexpectedly "normal" guy.

My favorite non Prog band whilst growing up was Steppenwolf. John Kay's Growl, Goldie McJohn's hammond work was killer. Nick St. Nicholas on Bass, Jerry Edmonton slamming the Skins. THe only lead player I can remember was Mars Bonfire, but he only stuck around for a few albums.

What about "Spirit" they came out with some pretty inspiring stuff.

Smile Hi Maani! I'm jealous ("green" with envy, get it?) of all your classic concert-going experience, especially your beer with Fripp & Eno (I'll never top that, though my bro' in law once lived next-door to a (must have been distant) cousin of Bill Bruford's, who after vounteering that yes, she was related to her famous namesake, said "I think he's in a band called "Yes" or something. Are they any good?"Confused DUHHH! True story, & my brush with prog greatness, such as it is.... I did shake Victor Wooten's hand, however. Oh well...

"Quay Lude's" (just a stage persona) real name (or at least band name) was/is Fee Waybill. He was a former roadie. Apparently somewhat of an extrovert on stage....

Thanks for the compliment Embarrassed on my Amon Duul II review. I'm going to write some shorter reviews of beloved classics over the next few days. I may not churn them out like a certain Mr. Ronnquist (? spelling -- who apparently either employs a large staff, or has hundreds of previously-written reviews waiting in his computer; the man must listen to music even more than I do, some 36 hours a day, eight days a week!), but I intend to thus increase my output. The longer reviews can be exhausting to write, & perhaps (perish the thought!) somewhat of a chore for some to read. I will still write the longer pieces as occasion and album dictate, however.

Re the shades of the Moodies (get it? Blue lettering -- ain't I the clever one?) Wink in the AD2 song, yes, I could see that (with that song, although the band's sound is very diverse, overall), especially in the mellotron and sweeping synth. Thanks for checking them out!

Regarding the problems with sending me Private Messages (which can be handy), I had put you on my "Buddies List" (you were the first), but the "status" part always indicated that you could not contact me. I may have done it wrong, though, because I have just now deleted then re-added your name, and now the computer indicates that you can message me! I'll send you one now, to test!Big smile

Yes, Danbo ol' buddy, both are very good. My fave is "The Neighbourhood." One of the best rockin' electric blues-based bands in the U. S. of A., with Mexican-American/Latin flavours as well. Love the singer's voice -- very real and heart-felt! Their all-Latin EP is good too! Collossal Head is also great!

Some of them yes...and I would say you're right...but some of them are really good...
I really like Opeth, like said before, it's one of my favorite non-prog bands or no, they are considered to be Prog some times...I heard or read words like 'Progressive Death Metal'
Katatonia is really nice to listen to, but not too long, I have their album 'Viva Emptiness' and it's not this kind of "this is no music to me" Death Metal
And I have ALL 'My Dying Bride' albums, because I was a fan before I became a prog fan...really melancolic...
But for the rest you're right

P.s. why do you all change your avatar all the time? I identify you by this picture and not by looking on the name, it's faster

About my favorite non-prog bands...well, too many to mention...

- jazz: Joshua Redman (amazing sax player), Bojan Z (great pianist from eastern Europe) and Thelonious Monk

- blues: SRV, Gary Moore (blues era)

- rock: Toto, Queen, Hendrix, Dire Straits...

- metal: old Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Symphony X, Nightwish, Steve Vai, Angra

- french singers/groups: Jacques Brel, Alexis HK, Noir Désir, Louise Attaque

- others: some disco music (yes, and I'm not ashamed!), and about everything good

But these ones are not the best IMO. Apart from prog metal, I think that the "oldies" (Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden...) are the best ones.

Cream

Hendrix

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Albert Freddie & BB King

My favorite non-prog band has to be Led Zeppelin. They are the only band other than Rush that I can honestly say I like ALL their songs. No other band comes close to my love of Led Zeppelin or Rush.
