I agree with infocat . Most of the Hogarth-era stuff takes a little longer to unpack than the Fish stuff (not that the early albums don't have their own hidden depths). But Brave has depths within depths and kind of stands out from the rest of their discography as something very special of its own.
Radiation I found very hard to love until recently, not least because I've always found the track sequencing a bit off (a lot of poppier numbers shunted to the front of the album and the proggier pieces at the back). AEProgman, if there's still Marillion stuff there at the store, here's what I'd recommend looking out for: FISH Script For a Jester's Tear, Clutching At Straws, Fugazi. HOGARTH
Afraid of Sunlight, Marbles (hold out for the 2CD version though, the 1CD one is missing some really great stuff), This Strange Engine. |

^ Thanks for tip Warthur. I also enjoy reading your reviews!
Since I have been enjoying the Childhood and Brave (its growing on me), I went back today and found Clutching at Straws, have not had time to listen to it yet. Was hoping to find Jester and Marbles but no dice. The others still there were a couple of live albums, Radiation, and marillion.com but did not pull the trigger on those. Looks like I will need to get Jester and Marbles (and others) the normal way, this site is bad on the wallet...

marillion.com is another one which takes a while to get to grips with even for fans, like Radiation, so good call saving it to later. (Worth checking out at some point though if only for Interior Lulu.) Clutching At Straws, I am convinced, is the absolute best thing the Fish-era band ever did; hope you enjoy. :D

Thanks for the share Steve. It's a shame I haven't got a blue ray or I'd be all over it.
The band are playing a few dates at Christmas and good news for me is they are playing Manchester again . |

Not sure why it’s taken me this long to add to this topic, considering I’ve only seen Marillion live four times—two with Fish, in 1986 and 1987, and twice with Hogarth, in 1991 and 1992.
I haven’t had time yet to peruse the entire thread yet, so I don’t know if anybody from west Michigan has posted yet, but this was one of the few markets in the USA where they had a significant impact, the fact that they played here so often being ample testament. They had quite a bit of local airplay as well. They made an in-store appearance before the ’87 show; I still have a 12” single of Sugar Mice signed by the entire band. They were opening for Rush on that tour, and I’d heard that they were booed off stage by Rush fans on their Detroit show. Hard to figure. The band provided a DAT (remember DAT? Hey, me neither ) of their 1992 concert to the local AOR station, which played tracks from it afterward. While the band was in town, they made another in-store appearance (I think it was only 3 members) and played a few songs semi-acoustically, including a cover of the Who’s “Substitute.” This mini-concert went out over the air live; I still got the tape of it. Sure I remember DAT, I never had a DAT player.....but I have plenty of friends who recorded concerts onto DAT tapes since they were pretty mobile, small decks.
One of my friends used to wear a beanie and hid 2 mics in his beanie to record shows, bad bad boy! |

And what do you think about Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors - the first solo album by Fish?

Anyone familiar with this concert and/or live album? http://www.mickpointer.com/scriptrevisited.html I made Forum searches using the phrases Mick Pointer Band and Script Revisited, no results (except related to Netherland's prog radio). A new gig will come in December... PS. The album now added into the Tributes section!

Well lookie here, stranger! The thread is still going, but not particularly strongly, I am afraid. Lots of them thar Marilion fans rode off into the sunset, leaving poor Cowboys such as I to ride a lonely furrow You are hereby given leave to resume your duties as town sheriff |

The above was my first post here since May, I used to pop by everyday!
Okay, I will start off a new discussion. I will post my review of Steve Rothery's solo effort in the next week, or so. What are everyone's thoughts on it? |

I've kept in touch with Steve (Progfan1958) over on Facebook and consider him a very good friend. I've attended the 3 Marillion conventions in Montreal with him and also 2 shows in Chicago when Marillion came through for their summer US tour. I also met Kenmar at the 2011 convention. Such a sweet guy. Kind heart and pretty passionate. He's all over the new fan documentary. Whatever happened to Progkidjoel? Such a good kid with great tastes in music. E |

I didn't know what I would think of it because I'm typically not into all instrumentals, but I love the new album. Really shows a different side of Rothery. I've only spun it about 2 or 3 times, but it'll spend a lot of time in the CD player I'm sure. E |

never saw this thread before .. I cant contribute to the new subject but as far as Marillion goes - I have to say this:
I heard of them years ago as 'a band that was like genesis' I was so into genesis that I didn't bother with them, although I had (still have) a copy of Misplaced Childhood that I never listened to. Recently for some reason I heard the entire Misplaced Childhood album (an mp3 download maybe) and it blew my socks clean off .. I listen to it over and over again .. only when I have enough time to listen to the entire thing - because to me - it's all one song - one experience. I've since picked up a few others (fugazi and jester .. and a couple more) but nothing compares to Childhood for me. One of the most perfect and immersive albums ever made ..for me at least.

I enjoy instrumentals, so far I find it luke warm, but only because I have not spent much time with it. Steve is an excellent guitar player and I expect the album will resonate with me. Generally I am not a big fan of these solo albums, for example H album a couple yrs ago was a sleeper for me, I really tried with that album.
