Yes, but that was more to do with war in general, and Fish had The Falklands conflict in mind, I believe.

^ I once heard some of the tracks on Season's End sung by Fish just before he left the band. Probably still my fave H Marillion.
Just listened to Radiation, and it's not as bad as its reputation suggests. Sure, the first few songs are more straightforward, but well written, the slower tunes are quite pleasant, and the last 2 tracks are back to Prog territory, and what they do best. The raw production is actually a nice touch for them. |

Seasons End is what really got me into Marillion.....I remember hearing Script, Kayleigh, good stuff for sure but I suppose back in the day not enough to reel me in...like H has done.

The details of Marillion Weekends in 2015 have been posted on the band website today (Marillion.com).
I really would like to go, but, in all honesty, I would struggle to justify going to this.

Thought I might mention a massive revelation I've experienced recently.........
Years ago, I gave up on Marillion, after Afraid Of Sunlight. Then, with the recent vinyl editions of .Com, Radiation and This Strange Engine, I was urged by one Aussie Byrd Brother (of PA fame) to snap them up. Reluctantly, I bought them over time and thought they're O.K., some really good stuff here and there, but nothing blowing. Here's the bit : I've been concentrating on TSE, and it's bloody awesome, with the titular epic totally bowling me over. And there is a REMARKABLE section approaching the climactic end section, the passage just when h sing "From Crimson to black. But coming back...." Then THE BEST passage of Marillion music I've heard to date plays through - Rothery solo is just sublime, with Kelly's ethereal keys and subtle rhythm section virtually bringing tears to my eyes......... Just incredible. Rant over...... Edited by Tom Ozric - April 30 2014 at 06:20 |

So I am sitting down tonight having a great listening session, I bought a new cartridge so I am spinning tons of vinyl to break it in.
Following along the lyric notes in the gatefold and never noticed this.. |

^ Ha ha ha - Sunsey Town...........!
I have the original EMI version I bought back in '89 - no gatefold, no lyrics, no credits, just the cover - and all it says on the back after the song titles is .... "This album was produced" ...........not even who by, or dates or location.... or who plays in the band. I had to look at the LP label to notice the new name Hogarth (and a Selmer to less extent). Almost thought they'd employed Lou Gramm from Foreigner........ |

Ha...Yes Marillion are good at those tidbits. Mine actually says "This album was recorded & mixed" (duh)
Brave on the back says "this album cut and dried" |

^ Oh, I was hazy on the info.....just got my vinyl in front of me now - it does say it was produced by Nick Davis & Marillion, and This album was recorded and mixed. I'm sure one album does say 'this album was produced'......
Oh, and it's Helmer, not Selmer.......... Edited by Tom Ozric - May 04 2014 at 00:09 |

Nick Davis is very good producer/mixer/engineer. He did the remix work for Genesis half speed remasters, as well as working with Marillion.

^ Laz, - knocked out ( as opposed to 'rushed out' !!! Just looking at the LP now. Incidentally, I eyed off the LP of AoS at an import shop in Melbourne for months, perhaps over a year, on the racks, back in the latter half of the 90's. It started out with a 35 dollar price tag, then some time later $25, and I finally gave in a long time later when they had put a flouro clearance price-tag of $15 AUD, still sealed. This one has the amazing Out Of This World, but I still find the passage in This Strange Engine much more moving. Whilst maybe not all the time, but Marillion certainly have this special kind of chemistry that occasionally cranks out the most emotional Prog that surpasses other quality Prog bands.....

I must prelude my ignorance for Marillion as I left the rock/prog music scene for instrumental stuff (got tired of vocals), such as jazz/fusion, classical, and electronic/new wave in the mid-80s through the 90s until finding my prog musical roots again in the 2000s. So I knew nothing of Marillion and its history until PA and a few years ago I picked up a cheesy, "Best of Marillion" that was from the Fish era...some nice moments but did not blow me away.
Today, while browsing through a second hand CD/music store, I found a handfull of Marillion albums that someone must have turned in their collection recently. So I picked up my first 2 Marillion albums that I knew were highly rated from each of vocal eras. I got "Misplaced Childhood" and "Brave". I have listened to both back to back about 2 times, and at this early stage Childhood is a little bit ahead in my liking. But Brave seems to demand more attention to listening and will need more listens. Being the cheapskate I am, I may head back to the 2nd hand store and see whats left. I don't remember all the titles except for the flaming headed Radiation .
