Poor Zeuhl getting a beating this time. Forget Magma and listen to some of the other acts in that sub. Eskaton and Weidorje have already been mentioned but more samples won't hurt.
A strategic vote for RIO/Avant-Prog. I want to keep Zeuhl, Post/Math and Symph aboard.
Interesting. I consider Zeuhl to be a sub-category of Avant Prog and of course Magma plays RIO fests and influenced some RIO bands, including perhaps my favourite band, Art Zoyd.
Agreed, but I listen more to Zeuhl than to any other RIO/Avant-Prog:
some of the Magma albums (Köhntarkösz, K.A. and Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré) are my fevourites, but Eider Stellaire's debut album and Weidorje cannot do anything wrong with me either. That's why I wanted to keep the Zeuhl subgenre inside, even at the cost of its supergenre.
This was just opportunistic voting; I'd rather see three or four other subgenres go first.

I agree Greg, I think a lot of people who thinks to get into Zehul go for Magma because they are so highly rated, I believe it's a mistake since they are very hard to digest even for several listenings. Zeuhl can't have so bad ratings!I'm sure that all the guys who voted for zeuhl didn't try to get into the music of Magma. Even just for them, zeuhl deserves better. Sub-genres mustn't shut music in limited labels! Thisis the most meaningless and foolishpollthat can be.

I do regret bringing up your name, Hercules, and wouldn't have had you
not posted in this thread already. I think PA should have space for all
sorts of different tastes and opinions, but I guess it's not always
that easy to come across as respectful when talking about our tastes.
Did your friends leave the site because they felt persecuted and
maligned by PA users, or was it more just because the focus shifted for a
lot of users from the kind of music (Melodic Prog, for instance) they
liked best?
I have seen changes here in tastes -- Dream Theater, for
instance, once seemed far more popular than it is now. In fact, at one
time every poll on the front page was a Dream Theater poll (mind you,
that was a joint effort by DT appreciators and detractors). There's no
use dwelling on the past, though, if PA has changed, so be it. I'm glad that this site embraces more music than it once did (its expanded in scope and so has the user-base from my observations since I was first visiting here). I think people are generally pretty respectful in their musical opinions here. I really don't see as much bashing as I once did, at least not from me (that's a little rather egotistical joke, by the way). I think it's okay to express that you don't like certain music -- especially if you try to give reasons, and are open to other opinions (just as one should feel free to praise music but be open to different opinions) but I digress.
I have no problem whatsoever with you for quoting my name as you were being perfectly reasonable. My only issue is with name calling and abuse and you were guilty of neither.
Their reasons for leaving were occasionally the former (thankfully rarely) but mainly the latter - they felt many new bands had been admitted to the site which were not genuinely progressive and diluted the focus of the group. They tended to prefer more classical prog, so the focus has unquestionably shifted. Also, as you say, the hordes of DT fans who once dominated the polls section seem to have disappeared; if they were still here, prog metal would not have been evicted so early!

Hercules has mentioned a shift in tastes at PA towards more experimental music, which has alienated a certain kind of Progger (hope I'm getting that right), but I don't think that shift is enough to save my favourites.
That's because said shift doesn't exist, it's just his persecution complex talking.
Been a user here almost 4 years and it's still only the same very small group of active users who actually listen to that kind of (good) stuff
What an obnoxious person you are, casting insults at anyone who disagrees with you.
I've not got a persecution complex at all - I've been here a lot longer than you and know loads of users personally who've gone off the site (I used to use the site through my late partner's account since 2003 before I registered in my own right after he died).
How is that an insult? It's a sofa diagnosis. "Obnoxious," on the other hand, certainly is an insult.
If you genuinely don't think that falsely accusing someone of having a persecution complex is insulting, than you really have got problems that need addressing.

Thanks, I really appreciate your response. I'm not always the most tactful of people and am socially awkward, so I often am concerned about how I come across. You've explained really well.
I don't normally do this, especially when I'm not involved in the conversation to start with, but I have to say that I genuinely enjoyed the way you guys just exchanged words. Something a lot of people on this site could learn a lot from.
Logan is widely known as the in-house avant and strange music guru, whereas Hercules is one of the most knowledgeable chaps around concerning the melodic side of prog. Two very different interests in music, yet both are able to communicate in a friendly and altogether understandable manner.

Interesting that you say this, because I got into Zeuhl via Magma. I didn't like them first listen, but for some reason their sound sat in my memory in an appealing way, and when I went back to them, I was completely floored. Different people, different routes of appreciation, I suppose.

^ Try some of the earlier tracks in the thread. There actually might be better Eskatn ones to try first even if Attente (think that's what I posted) is the one that first grabbed me.

Yep,
I got into Magma laterally so-to-speak. The way I explored the
categories at this site before joining (did this for a long time before
joining) was going through the mp3s of each category looking for music
that would quickly click -- I'd play a bit of one of one track and if it
didn' t quickly appeal I'd move on. I was a real noob to the vast
majority of music under this prog umbrella. I was already really into
lots of the lesser-known Zeuhl bands before I really approached Magma
(knowing the others did make it easier to get into Magma). I totally
get that "sound sticking in your memory" even if you don;t really like
the music at first. I was like that with Gentle Giant and my first mp3
player (before buying albums I downloaded several of their songs). It
was the Free Hand track that just got into me, and then I adored it.
Same happened to me me with Gentle Giant's Way of Life later on.
Incidentally,
I was going to post a Weidorje track too, but decided against it as I
thought it might scare off some people, as that was one of the first
that I also got into.
On a side-note, and this might scare off
some people, so be warned: For those possible people that think Zeuhl
is just about flowers, butterflies, rainbows and naked nymphs, ;), here
is one of the darker expressions in the Zeuhl universe (and no, I'm not
talkign about Magma's Ooh, Ooh Baby for those looking for more irony
than I intended).

I'm confused... Does this poll have any real impact on the actual content of this website? That is, will the least popular genres actually be removed from the Prog Archives website? Or is this poll just for the poll creator's personal interest?

Oh goodness no, this poll has no effect on the actual site. It's just the poll creator's interest, yea. It's just sad to see so many people don't like zeuhl.

Okay, thanks for making that clear Andy!
Personally, I like the fact that this site has a huge range of different music and artists. There's always new artists to discover.
