I predict the next 3-4 polls will consist of all the best genres getting knocked out

Interesting. I consider Zeuhl to be a sub-category of Avant Prog and of course Magma plays RIO fests and influenced some RIO bands, including perhaps my favourite band, Art Zoyd.
Agreed. I'd almost sooner someone cut off my manhood... It's rather sad for me to see three of my favourite categories with as many votes already as they have (RIO?Avant, Progressive Electronic, and Zeuhl). I'm not sure how I'll vote. I'm leaning towards symph even though it has some of my favourite albums in it (especially in the French symph scene). Nah, I can't do it. I might go with Proto-Prog or Post-Rock... Erm, maybe Crossover... *throws in the towel* don't think I'll vote. I don't think that any of my particular favourite categories will get to the end even if Krautrock has done well so far. Hercules has mentioned a shift in tastes at PA towards more experimental music, which has alienated a certain kind of Progger (hope I'm getting that right), but I don't think that shift is enough to save my favourites. |

That's because said shift doesn't exist, it's just his persecution complex talking. Been a user here almost 4 years and it's still only the same very small group of active users who actually listen to that kind of (good) stuff Edited by Triceratopsoil - January 07 2014 at 15:11 |

Except that symph has a chance of getting knocked out, so the poll has got that going for it, which is nice. |

That classic Urquhart line said, I will comment a bit, I haven't really observed the phenomenon either (and must admit that it was a bit of a troll from me -- sorry 'bout that). Perhaps there has been some shift since the really early days of the PA forum (I was lurking around here since the beginning, basically, and do think that there are more who are into less bog-standard Prog now, but then the site has grown, so it's to be expected, but then one would expect more boggers here too). The "avanteers", though a select few, may be more vocal than they once were, and perhaps are not as marginalised as they once were. I once bumped an old Arena vs. Area poll, and Arena was way ahead when I bumped it, but after I bumped it most people voted for Area (which is not to imply that Arena is bog music; just an example, y' know, of a more experimental act, though more of a classic too, against another). That said, Neo-Prog, of course, often displeases the older classic Prog "worked as a roadie with Yes when they were still good" set. Edited by Logan - January 07 2014 at 15:46 |

What an obnoxious person you are, casting insults at anyone who disagrees with you.
I've not got a persecution complex at all - I've been here a lot longer than you and know loads of users personally who've gone off the site (I used to use the site through my late partner's account since 2003 before I registered in my own right after he died). |

Yeah, best this not get any more personal than it already is (or it's really already past that point, so less personal...). * PA, the impersonal forum for impersonal people*. ;)
I do regret bringing up your name, Hercules, and wouldn't have had you not posted in this thread already. I think PA should have space for all sorts of different tastes and opinions, but I guess it's not always that easy to come across as respectful when talking about our tastes. Did your friends leave the site because they felt persecuted and maligned by PA users, or was it more just because the focus shifted for a lot of users from the kind of music (Melodic Prog, for instance) they liked best? I have seen changes here in tastes -- Dream Theater, for instance, once seemed far more popular than it is now. In fact, at one time every poll on the front page was a Dream Theater poll (mind you, that was a joint effort by DT appreciators and detractors). There's no use dwelling on the past, though, if PA has changed, so be it. I'm glad that this site embraces more music than it once did (its expanded in scope and so has the user-base from my observations since I was first visiting here). I think people are generally pretty respectful in their musical opinions here. I really don't see as much bashing as I once did, at least not from me (that's a little rather egotistical joke, by the way). I think it's okay to express that you don't like certain music -- especially if you try to give reasons, and are open to other opinions (just as one should feel free to praise music but be open to different opinions) but I digress. On a side-note: I thought the value of a poll series such as this would b getting all PA tastes under one roof and hopefully exposing people to music new-to-them that they might like -- maybe someone will come to appreciate a category, or at least music from it, that they didn't like or know before thanks to these polls. How is that an insult? It's a sofa diagnosis. "Obnoxious," on the other hand, certainly is an insult. See also for reference -

How can Krautrock still be here?
(Not that I actively dislike any of the subgenres, but come on!) |

^ I used to dislike Krautrock when I got into prog but changed my mind over the years when I gradually discovered a few exceptional gems, and of course with some help from a few respectable gentlemens here.

Why does people dislike Zeuhl so much? Never visited Kobaia?
I vote for Heavy again.

Maybe they've only visited a airly small suburb of Kobaia and haven't visited the non-Magma worlds. Magma wasn't the first Zeuhl band I got into. These may be the first three tracks I heard that hooked me when I first started to explore the category (not to say that it would hook others): Edited by Logan - January 08 2014 at 00:58 |

I agree Greg, I think a lot of people who thinks to get into Zehul go for Magma because they are so highly rated, I believe it's a mistake since they are very hard to digest even for several listenings. I didn't like Magma for a long time but thankfully discovered Zehul by listening to the bands you posted plus Weidorje which opened the floodgate, then the road to Magma was a lot easier.
