I figured this would happen for the 70's, but I see every decade since then being a lot closer.

Specifying only '70's material, I would have to go with Rush.  Throw in the rest and I might vote a different way.

You guys do realize that '70's should exclude ITCOTCK, right?

In the Court is actually my least favourite of the 1960s through 1970s albums anyway.  King Crimson by a mile.  Much more varied, interesting, and versatile band, I believe.

I used to be very big on Rush as a teenager, and still enjoy Caress of Steel as well as quite a bit of other Rush material (and I never turn off any Rush if it comes up on the radio, erm, well, unless I have company, a headache, can easily manipulate the radio frequencies while driving, have a non-radio music option, can safely reach the off button et cetera).  King Crimson I discovered as a mature, make that immature, adult.

I'm with the majority
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

LOL I know what I picked Wink

Rush was the first prog band I got immersed in, though, so I do give them a hat-tip for that. If not for them, I wouldn't have discovered my now faves, and that's not to say their stuff doesn't hold up either. It definitely does!

But then there's KC...

Makes their album strength better without it.

Why am I not surprised that a poll featuring Kc and Rush already has 50 votes. Gotta love it.

Both bands released their best material in the 70's in my opinion but RUSH just had that magic so simple yet so complex as well. KC all over the place with line-up changes. Who can compete with Lee and Peart?(Don't tell me Wetton and Bruford) ha. I think some of King Crimson's music in the 70's is a joke( Providence Dead sounds like a cat getting strangled)All those improv pieces all sound the same to me(not even remotely interesting). Rush in my opinion though the instruments and music were not as eclectic they were still pretty darn good. Imagine if Rush had a David Cross or someone like that. Think about it. For a 3 man band they were still pretty darn good(and still are).
Their best albums for me are LTIA and AFTK. I choose

Larks Tongues in Aspic< A Farewell to Kings

King Crismon. I do enjoy Rush, but I think their albums through the 70's sound all very similar, while King Crimson were extremely diverse. Plus, there's no album from Rush that get's close to Crimson's debut. Nor any Rush song I like as much as Epitaph and Starless (though 2112 may get close).

Easily Rush - I've never gone nuts for a King Crimson album however I do recognise their importance to prog music.
