The Musical Box, The Knife,The Return of the Giant Hogweed to me sound like they influenced Prog MetalShocked. Therefore I think those songs are heavy as for the later stuff not so much but those song are indeed heavy in my opinion. The stuff is earlier than anything Crimson ever did besides Schizoid Man but even at that I don't that song is really that Heavy aside from the power chords and drumming it really doesn't have what I love about Metal musicEvil Smile

Yes that is the point I was making. Fripp's leads on Schizoid Man hold similarities to death metal soloing. I guess my Avenged Sevenfold comment was unnecessary since it would be Maiden and Metallica that they got their influence from as opposed to Genesis.

also Hackett did not invent two hand tapping.

who used it first for rock music????

I never thought of Hackett's lead playing as metal-related. It's very melodic and classical influenced with a big tone but I don't see how that's metal. I see more relation to metal in say Fripp's lead work on 21st Century Schizoid Man, what with all the experimentation with wild noises and atonal melodies, holds a lot more similarities to future death and thrash metal soloing. Hackett's soloing has more similarities with Avenged Sevenfold than death metal :P

Avenge SevenfoldLOL more like Iron Maiden and Metallica, death metal sucksShocked for the most part

Why do you think that?

I'm not a fan of the low growling vocals and drumming, it all sounds the same, but Death is good. I' more of a fan of Thrash and Classic metal and their solos are more fluid and there's more varietyWink. I know a lot of Thrash sounds the same too but at least it varies more

Confused

No I have not. I actually don't listen to any progressive music whatsoever and simply come on here to pretend I do.

Have you heard the ending to Starless? LOL

No I haven't actually it lost me half wayLOL

A lot of people think the mid section is too long. Do yourself a favor - listen from 7 minutes onward.

To me it sounds as if they lifted it from LizardUnhappy, that bass sounds familiar

Schizoid probably but Epitaph?????

I just find it really intense, maybe not heavier in the sense of proto-metal, but the mellotron and piano are so dramatic.

Understandable, but it's not the least bit heavy in the proto-metal sense

Correct.
