I'm tempted to vote King Crimson just because they weren't on the last poll, but then I would be lying.  Besides, define "greatest."  Geek

Even though this guy puts the bands in their objective correct order

Nothing in music is objective, you just don't get it

I just pointed out the facts that Crimson does not have an album with an engaging storyline or concept

Who gives a f**k about a concept? Most bands don't have or don't care about concepts. Are they inferior to the bands having concepts?  Who needs it when you have such an engaging, innovative ground breaking band, that keeps evolving and reinventing itself and never thought about selling out. It's always been about the music first, that alone is worth a vote.

But if you don't think so master ProgMetaller2112, than I'll change my vote right away. Ahhhhh....Genesis right?

I reject this definition.
I think there are lots of good concepts in King Crimson's music: 21st Century Schizoid man is a great concept for a song, as is Starless and Bible Black, Thela Hun Ginjeet, The Power to Believe (in its multiple parts), along with many others.  Almost any song has a concept to it, so they are automatically included in the albums.  Of course this argument applies to both Yes and Genesis.

Genesis and Yes achieved the highest heights, Yes kept it going longer (at those heights), but Crimson kept reinventing itself in ways to always push the envelope, always keep things new and unexpected. So, I find myself unable to vote for one with absolute conviction.

I find it funny that you put Yes at the bottom and make a joke referencing one of their bad albums from the 80's, yet still are content to have Genesis at number 2.

^ With me and the Crims, roughly speaking, 90% of the time.

You don't sound like a guy who has actually heard a single Crim record from the '69-'74 period (what's with all the laughs? Stern Smile). Think you are bluffing about your history of listening to them. If you claim that they don't rock people's brains out, then your are just fooling yourself and nobody else.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy I've heard every Crimson album from the 69-74 period they have great moments at times but most of the time they don't go anywhere they do not satisfy me with but hell that's just me there an average band when compared to Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator , do u want me to keep going

If it doesn't happen to you doesn't mean it is wrong if it does to somebody else.   This piece easily crushes any Genesis or Yes track for sheer heaviness:

Or this, for that matter:

By the way, I love Genesis and Yes too but I doubt you are going to believe me the moment I say something positive about KC.  Seems your universe is a pretty binary one.

No, there is no point in you keeping on going. There is also no point in denying the influence of this band. Also, saying that they are an average band, ... . As much as I hate to do this, I'm gonna use the word "pretentious": that is one hell of a pretentious statement you've made there.

I never said they didn't influence other artists did I? I just personally think they are an average band I've heard those songs before Larks Tongues(both of them) and Red and there good just nothing to great in my opinion, so sorry if I don't think they're that great cuz you can listen to them all you want. There is no point in arguing with me. I just think they're average nobody has to get butthurt so calm down and CoolCoolCool down

I'm not super-agitated; I'm rather baffled. You nicked the Crims as an average band. What kind of an "average" band could make as much of an impact as King Crimson?

King Crimson, easily. I like early Genesis a lot, and I respect Yes, but I can't stand most of their output.

Yes is my favourite.
From this 3 great  bands I would rank King Crimson as second.

Out of these three I'm voting for Genesis, as I listen to them a lot more than I do the other two.

Since Pink Floyd's not on the list, it has to be Genesis.

You ask people their opinion and then tell them it is bad

Even though this guy puts the bands in their objective correct order
there is no objective correct order

C'mon, s/he's obviously kidding.

Exactly my point. KC are the heaviest classic prog band I've ever heard.

does it have to be heavy to be good though? not necessarily and KC are Symphonic Prog not Heavy Prog

^ You are missing the point. They don't have to be heavy to be good. Even when they are not heavy, they are goo-oo-ood. And, using the rough PA terminology and standards, no, they are not Heavy Prog, nor are they Symph Prog. They are under Eclectic Prog, though, and yet, technically, they are all three of these things ... well, ... were. Lastly, when I noted their heaviness, I meant to reflect the impression they've made on me.

Doesn't have to be, but the way you questioned Gandalff using the headbanging icon was as if to suggest they are not heavy at all and that makes no sense.   They are clearly very heavy and if any of the big classic prog rock bands would at all be described as headbangable by this metalhead, it would be KC, not Yes and most certainly not Genesis.

KC was symph only until Lizard, in my opinion. They maybe included some symph elements later, but they were never as symphonic as on In the Court or In the Wake.

I ain't missing the point all I said was that it doesn't have to heavy to be good, I could of sworn that they were considered Symph Prog but I guess not

Of all the concepts I've ever known or been aware of there are only few that could potentially make prog great.
Let me repeat that: there are only a few concepts that could potentially make prog great. Some concepts can actually embarrass prog. Let me repeat that: Some concepts can actually embarrass prog.

A few concepts embarrass Prog but when they hit the nail in the head, concepts change a good Prog album into a masterpiece

  1. The Lamb - Genesis
  2. 666 - Aphrodite's Child
  3. Thick as a Brick - JT
  4. Darwin - Banco del Mutio Soccorso
  5. La Buona Novella - PFM
  6. Six Wives - Rick Wakeman
  7. The Wall - Pïnk Floyd
  8. Tommy - The Who
  9. Quadrophenia - The Who
  10. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders of Mars - David Bowie
  11. Tales from an Island - Impressions from Rapa Nui - Blank Manuskript
  12. Seven - Magenta
  13. Tales from Mystery & Imagination - Alan parsons Project
  14. V: The New Mythology Suite - Symphony X
  15. Misplaced Childhood - Marillion
  16. Recuerdos de mi Tierra - Triana
  17. 20,000 Miles Under the Sea - Nautilus
  18. Illusions on a Double Dimple - Spartacus
  19. Ascenção e Queda - Petrus Castrus
  20. Depois do Fim - Bacamarte
I could go on for hours.

Conceptual albums are a cornerstone of Prog

1) That's not the point I was making. Mr. PM2112 here claimed that concepts are "one of the factors that makes this kind of music great". My point is that it's not always the case. Some prog can live without concepts, like KC's prog. "Concepts" may be the cornerstone of prog, but not all concepts make prog great.

2) I don't think that The Lamb is something to present to the world with pride. I think it rather embarrasses prog. Ergo, my following thought is that some of the other entries in your list could be questionable too. Sorry to say that.

I agree a concept is one of the many features prog has and I agree with Ivan that when it's done right it only increases the album's quality. I don't have to agree with the list because it's purely subjective, I have my own list.
But the whole thing started when PM2112 gave KC as an example for saying, if you don't have concepts you can't be better than other bands having good concepts. And that is Bullsh*t. HAVING NO CONCEPTS DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE BAND'S QUALITY!

soo that just means you have very niche tastes and look for very specific things in music which is all very well and good for you but doesn't really have much to do with the quality of KC's music.

I like prog because for a while I can leave this world and enter into another. It happens with Syd Barrett who doesn't have a concept (but his whole life was a concept). In general a concept makes it simpler. A concept is possible also with instrumental only music. There's an album by Senmuth that's about the travel of Osiris in the realm of death until his resurrection which represents also the cycle of day and night. It's totally instrumental but if you know what has inspired the music what is apparently just dark and noisy becomes a story in which one can make a full mental immersion.
