3 stars Well intended effort and an improvement on their first, rather hectic album.

Unfortunately, this work is still lacking direction - and as such - it fails to impress. To their credit, they applied some restraint here, but that is just not sufficient to elevate this work beyond noting the lack of irritation associated with their debut release.

My criteria is relatively simple. Would I listen to an album again? I'd have to say no to this one. Not whilst hundreds of potentially promising albums are sitting on my shelves, awaiting for the first spin. "Galleons" is not bad, it's just not quite good enough, either. There is enormous material available even from those early years of Prog, yet to be examined - and in some cases, absorbed - thanks to numerous releases from the vaults in recent times.

With that in mind, I couldn't possibly rate this work as essential. Life is just not long enough to fill with other, but the very best.

In my opinion this is not a review.....it tells me nothing.

Well BORA is churning them out but I  wish hed explain the music as it is sposd to be a music review not a review about your review.... Reviews should taLK ABOUT THE ALBUM - is that too much to ask>????????????AngryAngryAngryAngry

I don't see where the problem is, really!!!

It's quite obvious he speaks of Galleons and compares it with their previous albums... and I agree with his assessment... though unlike him, I find this one to be their weaker effort

It's not like he's dissing the album, he's just saying it's non-essential...

In itself, this is the kind of review I wrote up when I started here... (until a rewrote a good chunk of them in later years (including all three Finch albums)

It's a well-informed if unsatisfying write-up, and rather good; maybe if he knew people are expecting more in material description he'd expand his style.   On the whole I see nothing wrong with it, he seems to know where of he speaks.

Please define this well written phrase.......lack of irritation associated with their debut release. I already said I was okay with it. So be it. So those that think it  is a good enough review can go to Mr. Bora. I will put stock in the serious reviewers such as Epignosis, Atomic Crimson, Clem of, etc. People who can actually tell you something about the music good or bad. A well informed review, bull.

indeed ... seems to be a recurring problem at the moment, maybe force people to write a review of a minimum length instead of this quick review stuff. Hmm..

My post seems to have disappeared.... I must have cocked up somewhere when I tried to edit it Clap

I saw your post. I reported it yesterday. Your post just disappeared. I thought I was Hallucinating. I reported him in the ratings thread. I think they review a few older albums honestly then trash all this years albums.

Yes, trying to be clever by posting some ineffectual rating of old stuff then trashing everything new tis year apart from one ... not hard to spot ;-)

I doubt anyone will "go to" him for much, I don't even know who this guy is, never heard of him.   But I stand by my remark; it is an informed if not-very-good review.  This is a public reviewing platform and all reviewing styles, as long as they observe the rules & guidelines, are welcome.

^ I can understand your point. I make no decisions for the site. I do however choose which reviewers to put stock in. He will not be one of them.

While it is regretable he is giving arbitary 1-star ratings that are far from fair or even reasonable, I cannot see any evidence of actual wrong doing. Everyone is entitled to their opinion even if it is idiotic.

What?

In all honesty, if you like Rush, and you don't like anything else, why bother rating the others?

It's like "I love Rush" so I'll give them 4 stars, but I don't like anything else so I'm going to lower their overall score by giving every one of them a 1.

Very odd indeed.

^ I agree that he is doing something wrong and in his pathetic way trying to manipulate. At what point does the site say enough is enough. I cannot determine that but I know when i see such ratings they smack of wrongness. His opinions are worth nothing to a site which strives to be a fair database. This is my opinion.

Yup - it stinks and sure it looks like deliberate manipulation but why give Rush 4-stars? Surely if you're going to hype them up a chart (assuming that's what all the 1-stars are about) then why not give them 5-stars?

1-star ratings without review are ineffectual if you have several reviews, and they are even more inefectual if you have reviews from offical PA collaborators/reviewers.

With his 1-star rating-only your album's average is 4.166, without it that becomes 4.178 ... a 0.281% difference in 73 ratings - the maths says it all - 1 in 73 is 1.37% - our review weightings have reduced the effect of his rating by a factor of 5 (ish).

It is really not worth anyone's while correcting a 0.281% "error" in an album rating, because we've got 38,386 other albums that we'd also have to do it for. Once we start being picky about which ratings to allow and which to delete then we have to do it to every album and every rating otherwise we would be a guilty of bias and favoritism and then we're on a slippery-slope to misery.

When I can prove that someone has created multiple accounts to deliberately hype an album then I'll delete them because that's a direct and flagrant abuse that entails breaking site rules. But someone with a single account who thinks they can make any difference to anything by giving all the "opposition" 1-stars is wasting their time and I'd rather they didn't waste mine.
What?

Just to note - I wasn't asking to have his rating removed from my overall score - you're right - it's extremely minor, the intent of the notification was simply to inform you of another individual doing manipulation.

more culprits here...

http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=43347

It must be time to kill the quick rating thing and make everyone write a review?! Otherwise the ratings will continue to be manipulated easily.

There are more I have noticed, some cleverer than others at trying to cover their tracks a little, but I can't be bothered with it to be honest.
