I have no hesitation in saying yes, particularly (but not exclusively) from a prog perspective. Somewhere Else felt rather lightweight, Happiness Is the Road was too uneven, and I don't really count Less Is More as one of their "main" studio albums personally since was really more of a stylistic experiment in tinkering with an unusual tangent rather than a direction that the band seriously proposed to take their music in on a long-term basis.

I know this has probably been discussed before, and probably many many pages ago, but I was wondering what the general consensus is with regard to favourite Marillion albums.  I don't have the new one yet so can't rank that one yet.  However I have a feeling this will be right up there.  Fortunately this is probably a cert for a birthday present for me in a few weeks time so I'll have to be patient and wait.  The new stuff sounded fantastic live, especially Gaza, but I'll restrain myself from streaming or downloading and wait for the real thing.....
Anyway my favourite albums by the band are:-

1.  Marbles
2.  Happiness Is The Road
3.  Afraid of Sunlight
4.  Anoraknaphobia
5.  This Strange Engine

Brave has fantastic material but suffers from poor production, so misses out on the top 5 for me.  Controversial I know.  I'm sorry for lovers of the Fish era, but those albums are light years behind the above 5 (and a few others too).  Script and Misplaced Childhood would rank above Holidays In Eden (the poorest h era album imho), but other than that it would be h albums all the way for me.

I'd be interested to see other views.

The new one is easily the best since Marbles. I would say it is at least on a par with the great Afraid Of Sunlight.

I will review it next week.

Latest e-bulletin:

5 October 2012 Update From The Racket Club

Whilst the band are finishing off rehearsals before flying over for the South America and Mexico tour starting next week (dates at www.marillion.com/tour), we thought we'd take this opportunity to update you on a few things here at Racket Records.

As most of you are aware there have been some delivery problems with the Sounds That Can't Be Made Deluxe Edition CD. We now know that they are landing/ have landed in all countries around the world, so your copy should be with you any day. If you haven't received yours by the 28th day from your shipment email, please email [email protected]. Please don't email us before then as we really have no more information for you. We hope that those of you who have received it can see that it's worth the wait. If you still haven't got hold of a copy you can buy one now fromwww.marillion.com/music/albums/sounds.htm. The album is available from us in Deluxe, Standard CD, MP3 & FLAC versions.

Many of you are emailing to ask when the final part of the Holidays In Zelande box set DVD's will be available. They are being finished now and it's looking like an early to mid November release - we will put details on the website and Facebook when it's all finalised. A multi-region Blu-ray will hopefully be available in late November.

Also many of you are asking if there will be anymore Sounds That Can't Be Made merchandise - well we already have one t-shirt, a mouse mat, a car sticker and a mug. We will also have some new Sounds That Can't Be Made t-shirt designs available very soon.Go to www.marillion.com/music/albums/sounds.htm to view all 'Sounds' related products on one page.

We have put some more US and Canada shows from the recent tour into the download section of the Racket store and we hope to add some from the July dates and the UK shows over the next few weeks.
CLICK HERE to view all available 2012 Downloads.

Copies of the 'Sounds Live' album are still available from LiveHereNow. Recorded & released on the night at the London Forum in September featuring songs from the new album performed live.

Finally our friends at Snapper are releasing Anoraknophobia on vinyl which is available to pre-order here: www.marillion.com/shop/albums/anorak-vinyl.htm

I'm away for a couple of months, and nobody posts here? What is going on?

Okay then, let's kick start things again. Who here has seen the band on the recent world tour, and what were your thoughts on what you saw? Of special interest would be feedback from South America, where the band hadn't been for a number of years.

I saw them on their two night stopover in Chicago this past summer. Very cool to see a straight up set list and no themes like from the conventions. Now that I've heard all of STCBM, I like to have heard more from that album, but they were only showcasing "Power" (which I'm really growing to enjoy) and "Lucky Man" (which still hasn't landed). Excellent set list, but was a little torqued to have them omit a couple of songs on the second night for "The Invisible Man" and "Neverland", which were played the night before. Still, not enough to dampen the experience.

Brave Live 2013 in Port Zelande, Montreal and Wolverhampton.

I never thought I'd see this performed live. Next March is going to be so special.

It does make the prospect of presenting the wife with a fait accompli of tickets for Wolverhampton a distinctly more certain thing. How can I pass this up?

Latest e bulletin. A new Edison's Children album being madeClap

13 December 2012 Update From Pete
Hi there… Pete here, coming to you from the Endless Mountains of Pennsylvania. Happy Holidays!
Edison’s Children has had its first birthday, as In The Last Waking Moments… is now one year old. To celebrate the occasion we have released
“In The First Waking Moments… The Making of ITLWM”, This is an 80 minute collection of the demos, alternate versions and remixes of “ITLWM”. There are also some very funny outtakes on the CD and me doing lead vocal for A Million Miles Away and such.

I am currently recording the next Edison’s Children album with Eric Blackwood @ Castle Edison. The new album will also be a “themed” album like the last one and will feature at least one song over the 20 minute mark. I will be signing all CDs/merch ordered from edisonschildren.comfor the next two weeks. Stay in the loop atwww.facebook.com/edisonschildren for frequent updates on how the recording is going.

Watch out for the end of the world!!
Pete.

I've left it a while so as to form a rounded opinion, but I have to agree with the majority here, the new album is the best since Marbles.

Much as I like Somewhere Else and Happiness Is The Road, STCBM has more depth.  It's a very deep album, layered and with a wonderful atmosphere that drags you in much like Marbles did.  Parts of Gaza are truly spinetingling, but that track is not on it's own.

A great album.  Is it as good as Marbles?  No certainly not, but a great album nontheless.
