Led Zeppelin are like the 70s Beatles; four great musicians with amazing chemistry and a unique sound, become huge stars, and then start experimenting with their music.

Read the book "Hammer of the Gods" sometime -- a great historical account of Led Zeppelin. Concert promoters had a love/hate relationship with them - on the one hand, they could consistently sell out any venue at any time. On the other hand, their management (Peter Grant) used this leverage to negotiate some pretty sweet deals.  They're one band that wasn't ripped off by the music biz.  They were on top of the world, and they called their own shots.Their popularity really was unprecedented for a band that wasn't a "singles" band.

I didn't like Hammer of the gods that much. Felt too much like a groupie log with bried inserts of music babble.

It really was more about the legend of Led Zeppelin rather than the music - the crazy tours and drinking, drugs, and loose women and all that jazz.   I still liked it, though I'd probably be up for a more musical account/analysis at some point too.

Mick Wall has written a book about them as well, called When giants walked the earth. Might give it a read at some point.

I wonder if anyone ever called him "Brick".  Seems like a good nickname for him.

Rolling Stone has a special edition this month featuring Led Zeppelin.  You might want to check that out too.

I liked it too. A good read.

Just got back from concert with Ian Anderson & Co. performing the full TAAB & TAAB2. A good show! IA can't sing anymore, but he's still an excellent entertainer and flutist. And the rest of the performance was brilliant too, just as it was when I saw them back in July.
