Yeah, once I get going, I can't shut up about em! I've certainly made enough noise about them on this forum. Thankfully a lot of that noise has gone to constructive use, in the form of formal reviews. I gave 3 of their first 4 albums 5 stars.
And now I vow to go

Of these Floyd, could have gone for Univers Zero, Hatfield or National Health

Hatfield is sort of a supergroup since it has Richard Sinclair and Pip Pyle, but if I put that down I'd so vote for that!! Hatfield has to be one of my favorite albums ever... I was thinking of adding Univers Zero since that band really defines Avant (in a way) and I didn't think of National Health.

I picked other-Triumvirat-Mediterranean Tales
Their debut is the most strikingly beautiful and brilliantly played ones by anybody i have ever heard. It tends to be a bit under-rated, though, around here. They did not have Helmut Koellen within their ranks yet, but Jurgen Fritz on keys leads the band amazingly well.

That is a great album! The keyboards are so solid, the only thing I believe what kept that to be a masterpiece was the vocals. I think they were well known, but they were known for the wrong reasons; that they were the 'German ELP'. Nonetheless, fantastic band. I could've added that.

I just dug the LP out and looked over it, not a bad song on that debut - ALL STUNNERS!!
`Wild and Exciting', `Twilight Dreamer', `You Know The Way' and so on!
I love the kind of awkward English translated lyrics on `Vivid Shady Land' like `Leaves all smashed on the river side, The trees are burning and they're crying bright' lol! And that upbeat chorus with `making love with our minds' bit is killer!
I also thought `Ruby Is The One' is kind of a super-sexy lesbian anthem too! |
Michael, I now understand why you and HolyMoly are such fanatics about this band. I love Renaissance and Jefferson Airplane, 'nuff said. I'm buying the first 3 albums immediately. Their debut is surprisingly powerful!! Didn't expect that after the calm prog bliss of Song of the Marching Children and Atlantis. Anyways, there's few bands these days that I go "holy I love this" and I felt that with Earth & Fire. I always wanted a proggy Jefferson Airplane, and I just thought I was dreaming. Now I have found it!! Thank you Michael and HolyMoly Oh, oh!!

That is EXACTLY how I feel about that Triumvirat debut album - everything in it's right place except the vocals. They kind of let down the rest of the album for me, and I think I'm rather too dismissive of the great music on it because of the voice.
Hmmm, not the only time there would be issues with Triumvirat and inappropriate singers - Looking in your direction, Barry Palmer!

Ha, YES!! That's exactly how I felt when I first heard it! I was like `Holy S%%T, I have to tell EVERYONE about this album' lol! I remember I was on the phone to my fellow Australian Archives buddy Tom Ozric right away telling him `Uh, mate, that debut Earth and Fire album that Greg Walker's got in stock on LP reissue.....yeah, you're going to want to snap that up right away....'!
That first album is like a crunchier Jefferson Airplane (another band I love, especially the debut and `Baxters'), the lead singer has such a tough, confident and commanding voice (while still remaining very feminine and sexy), and there's so many catchy riffs and psych moments scattered amongst the tracks.
Some of the CD reissues of the debut album have lots of terrific bonus tracks (for once!) that start to show their shift from psych/acid/rock to more progressive stylings.

Haha, I couldn't think of another way to explain it. I was gonna say '70's super group' but the term 'super group' means members of a previous band creating a group. So that doesn't apply. I just mean the 'big' prog bands.

Thanks for your comments, guys. Yeah, the vocals could be better, but for me, they don't detract much from the album's instrumental greatness which astounds me every time i hear it. I reviewed it and gave it an (appropriate for me) five stars

In regards to Yes and This Was, there was a fundamental change from the debuts to the second albums. The addition of a new guitarist in each case, The Yes Album (Steve Howe) and Stand Up (Martin Barre) offer a night and day contrast from debut to second album, and the approximation of the actual "sound" of each band going forward.
Of the albums listed, I chose The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

Out of this list I'm struggling between JT, Camel, Soft Machine and GG. Mmmm... the giants are still with no votes...strange, anyway I guess it's my favorite.
I wanted to stick with the list but there are so many good debuts, as others already said Earth & Fire is very good. I would add PFM (I'd go for that one if it was here), Banco, Black Sabbath and Trettioariga Kriget just to name a few.
