I didn't add King Crimson and ELP since they'd dominate the polls.

And for starters, I'd choose Camel. Their powerful debut showed the overall 'Camel' sound from the first album! With such classic songs as Mystic Queen, Six Ate, Curiosity, and Arubaluba, I find this easily the best debut (though most of them are great).

I'll vote Camel as well, their debut showed that they could really rock the shorter instrumentals. Just a pure masterpiece, easily a top 10 album for me. If I could add another it would be The Mars Volta's "Deloused in the Comatorium".

I've actually only heard three of these (Shocked) so I'd better not vote. I think Rush's debut is pretty good though. I stil need to hear Camel's, which I want to do because I like them a lot.

^It's an amazing record, I would recommend the tracks; Curiosity, and Arubaluba.

The live version of Arubuluba issued as a bonus track on Mirage blows me away, so I have no doubt I'd love the album.

Tough call (and I know and enjoy all of them), but I gotta go with Freak Out.  I like it more and more with age.

Almost went with Magma, but.....

LOL that would easily take over the poll if I put that up! I tried to keep 'classic' bands. Only 70's.

^and llama, you're missing out!! There's some decent tracks, but overall it's a classic Camel album. And Bytor is right, the instrumentals are incredibly solid. Especially on a debut album. Six Ate and Arubaluba are both some of my favorite Camel tunes Smile

Would have voted for Floyd's `Piper' ten years ago - a knockout defining psychedelic debut album that sounds like no other album before or since - but my friend and I, who worshipped it, have totally OD'd on it. Don't think I've listened to it in years now....

But as much as I love the first Camel album, I'm going with the underappreciated first Yes album! A charming, jazzy rocker with lots of fiery playing, lovely vocals, an upbeat joyful mood. The album always cheers me up, and `Looking Around' is just a KILLER pop song too!

Have to say, if I chose `Other', `Earth and Fire's debut album is a total stunner as well, one of my all-time favourite debuts!! `Ruby Is The One', `Vivid Shady Land' - every track is great!!

i would say Frost*, it's just an epic album with an awesome starting with Hyperventilate and some incredible sounds... Jem Godfrey is AMAZING on the keyboard and Black Light Machine is, IMO, one of the best songs out there

I really do love the Yes debut too. Underrated. Sweetness is so sweet! Harold Land is awesome, and Yesterday and Today is hypnotizing (too bad it's so short).

I never listened to the band Earth and Fire!! At first I thought you meant 'Earth, Wind & Fire' and I thought "that disco group is on this site?!

Anyways, I'll look it up! Looks like Song Of The Marching Children is pretty popular...

Well worth checking out, Brandon! Their debut is a little more straightforward than the rest of their albums, but it just crackles with so much energy, full of acid-guitar psych rock songs with terrific male/female vocals. I always like to draw attention to that album, and Earth and Fire are just a great band in general!

And as you said, !

I always think of you HolyMoly when mentioning Earth and Fire, I know you're a big supporter of them!

I just dug the LP out and looked over it, not a bad song on that debut - ALL STUNNERS!!

`Wild and Exciting', `Twilight Dreamer', `You Know The Way' and so on!

I love the kind of awkward English translated lyrics on `Vivid Shady Land' like `Leaves all smashed on the river side, The trees are burning and they're crying bright' lol! And that upbeat chorus with `making love with our minds' bit is killer!

I also thought `Ruby Is The One' is kind of a super-sexy lesbian anthem too!

I picked other-Triumvirat-Mediterranean Tales

Their debut is the most strikingly beautiful and brilliantly played ones by anybody i have ever heard. It tends to be a bit under-rated, though, around here. They did not have Helmut Koellen within their ranks yet, but Jurgen Fritz on keys leads the band amazingly well.

Yeah, once I get going, I can't shut up about em!  I've certainly made enough noise about them on this forum.  Thankfully a lot of that noise has gone to constructive use, in the form of formal reviews.  I gave 3 of their first 4 albums 5 stars.

And now I vow to go Back to topic

Hatfield is sort of a supergroup since it has Richard Sinclair and Pip Pyle, but if I put that down I'd so vote for that!! Hatfield has to be one of my favorite albums ever...

I was thinking of adding Univers Zero since that band really defines Avant (in a way) and I didn't think of National Health.

That is a great album! The keyboards are so solid, the only thing I believe what kept that to be a masterpiece was the vocals. I think they were well known, but they were known for the wrong reasons; that they were the 'German ELP'.

Nonetheless, fantastic band. I could've added that.

Michael, I now understand why you and HolyMoly are such fanatics about this band. I love Renaissance and Jefferson Airplane, 'nuff said. I'm buying the first 3 albums immediately.

Their debut is surprisingly powerful!! Didn't expect that after the calm prog bliss of Song of the Marching Children and Atlantis. Anyways, there's few bands these days that I go "holy Censored I love this" and I felt that with Earth & Fire.

I always wanted a proggy Jefferson Airplane, and I just thought I was dreaming. Now I have found it!! Thank you Michael and HolyMoly Embarrassed

That is EXACTLY how I feel about that Triumvirat debut album - everything in it's right place except the vocals. They kind of let down the rest of the album for me, and I think I'm rather too dismissive of the great music on it because of the voice.

Hmmm, not the only time there would be issues with Triumvirat and inappropriate singers - Looking in your direction, Barry Palmer!

Ha, YES!! That's exactly how I felt when I first heard it! I was like `Holy S%%T, I have to tell EVERYONE about this album' lol! I remember I was on the phone to my fellow Australian Archives buddy Tom Ozric right away telling him `Uh, mate, that debut Earth and Fire album that Greg Walker's got in stock on LP reissue.....yeah, you're going to want to snap that up right away....'!

That first album is like a crunchier Jefferson Airplane (another band I love, especially the debut and `Baxters'), the lead singer has such a tough, confident and commanding voice (while still remaining very feminine and sexy), and there's so many catchy riffs and psych moments scattered amongst the tracks.

Some of the CD reissues of the debut album have lots of terrific bonus tracks (for once!) that start to show their shift from psych/acid/rock to more progressive stylings.

Haha, I couldn't think of another way to explain it. I was gonna say '70's super group' but the term 'super group' means members of a previous band creating a group. So that doesn't apply.

I just mean the 'big' prog bands.

Thanks for your comments, guys. Yeah, the vocals could be better, but for me, they don't detract much from the album's instrumental greatness which astounds me every time i hear it. I reviewed it and gave it an (appropriate for me) five stars

In regards to Yes and This Was, there was a fundamental change from the debuts to the second albums. The addition of a new guitarist in each case, The Yes Album (Steve Howe) and Stand Up (Martin Barre) offer  a night and day contrast from debut to second album, and the approximation of the actual "sound" of each band going forward.

Of the albums listed, I chose The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

Out of this list I'm struggling between JT, Camel, Soft Machine and GG. Mmmm... the giants are still with no votes...strange, anyway I guess it's my favorite.

I wanted to stick with the list but there are so many good debuts, as others already said Earth & Fire is very good. I would add PFM (I'd go for that one if it was here), Banco, Black Sabbath and Trettioariga Kriget just to name a few.

Well done!  I picked Yes, it was very influential on me even though they did a few covers.  BTW, the second Yes album was the remarkable "Time and a Word," still featuring Peter Banks on guitar.

This is quite an excellent performance from the first LP, if you've never seen this...rare Peter Banks footage!! (sorry, the player embed function isn't working for some reason)

I may be wrong, but I think the OP deliberately avoided debut albums that are considered "classics" - these are debut albums by classic bands, but where the debut albums are not commonly considered their best work; in fact, they're sometimes ignored.

I love later Floyd, but I was never a fan of the Syd Barrett dominated band and Piper doesn't do it for me.

The first Giant album is good, but my vote goes to Camel, who hit the ground running and never stopped.

Other great debuts: Druid (Toward the Sun) Horslips (Happy to Meet, Sorry to Part) and Gryphon (Gryphon).

That's what "other" is meant for.

I voted for Kobaia, and it was an easy choice despite loving several on the list (I know them all), and having lots of beloved débuts that I could have mentioned as an "other" 'choice.  I think that Kobaia is a knock-out début album.  Magma is one of my absolute favourite bands, and that is my favourite album by Magma.  I find it a stunning double-album début.

I really like GG's debut, but I have to give my vote to Kobaďa. Love that one!

I picked Camel with Magma next.
I'm not sure what the "other" includes but i'm thinking Mahavishnu Orchestra, Anekdoten, Anglagard.

I voted other, because of this one:
or else I would probably go for either Soft Machine or Floyd...

I tried to contain only English and American bands mainly. Also they weren't very much 'known' and aren't considered as the 'classic' prog bands to non-prog fanatics.

Thinking about it, I could've added Focus since Hocus Pocus was played throughout rock stations.

good choice. I like the first two Triumvirat albums , less keen after that tbh
Thanks, i like something in all of the Triumvirat records, though i consider the first three the only essential prog albums from the bunch. My order of preference is
                                                                                Illusions
                                                                               Spartacus

                                                                               Pompeii
                                                                                Old Loves Die Hard
                                                                               A La Carte
                                                                               Russian Roulette

Man, this has got to be one of the easiest polls I've participated in. Cool Magma's debut is a steal! The album that started all that madness that is Zeuhl. Classic album - very consistent. I've always enjoyed the darker atmosphere of it compared to Vander's later works. It's great. Thumbs Up

Magma , Yes , PF and Softs are battling so hard I had to go for other  - the darkside - Univers Zero 1313. Though worth mentioning is Present's Triskaidekaphobie  ( Fear of the Number 13 ).

From this list CAMEL. But the best debut for me is Dream Theater's "When Dream and Day Unite".

Have them all except for Rush. I never really 'clicked' with that one.
Very tough choice. To be different, I'll vote 'other' - ATOMIC ROOSTER's debut.

Can't believe Tull's, Caravan's and Magma's debuts are doing so bad, considering the weak competition.

I'm amazed how reliable a poll winner Camel is in this forum. This happens time and again. Now they even win against the biggies.
