Pfff, rubbish comment. Not everyone can growl. Some fans of old-school death-metal complain about "pig squealings" from youngsters who just can't growl. One needs some training if he/she wants to growl. Moreover, when reading the posts and comments in this thread, it doesn't seem that "the whole world's at [one's] feet" if the vocals are of the "Growling" type. The future belongs to auto-tuned vocals. |

I have to say that growled vocals are actually one of the few musical elements I just can't stand. So clean is definitely what I'd prefer.

I can't imagine this song with clean vocals :
I think the vocals fit perfectly the music.
In the field of extreme metal, I think the vocoder used on Cynic's 'Focus' ruined the album : this was a failed attempt to mix growls with "cleaner" vocals. Processed/clean vocals work better for me in Fear Factory's 'Demanufacture' . Edited by lucas - August 18 2012 at 16:03 |

Growling and other harsh vocals actually require a great deal of training, that is, if you want to do them without destroying your voice. You have to go through the entire process of learning singing technique, and then apply that to harsh vocals. There are professional instructors who specialize in teaching harsh vocals, and there's actually a DVD out called "The Art of Screaming" which goes through all the technique and everything required to do some brutal and varied harsh vocals without blowing your vocal chords out.

I know, my comment was a joke.
Do you mean any growler can sing?

If they use proper harsh vocal technique, then yes. |

It is a very subjective question. Because the objective answer is that anybody who is not tone deaf can sing. Carrying a tune is really not a big deal at all, unless the melody is really complicated. But I have never heard an out and out growler whose melodic singing I could enjoy very much in its own right. Yeah, not even Akerfeldt. I honestly find his melodic singing very dull and boring. Mastodon sort of mix aggressive hard rock/heavy metal singing with occasional harsh vocals and I have maintained that that's a much better approach. Extreme consonance and dissonance in juxtaposition is usually a very awkward combination (not saying there's no way it can work, never say never). Leaving Patton out of this, who is a master of many vocal techniques, harsh and otherwise.

Any type of vocal used correctly is ok with me. Growl needs courage btw, on live performances we may see unlucky moments sometimes (like Mastodon though I like them). I think if you can't stand growl vocals you are missing a lot in your prog life.

I've tried some Opeth, and while I think the growls are impressive, I can't get into it as easily, even in songs with both growls and clean vocals.
So, regular singing for me.

![]() I would say BURTON C. BELL of FEAR FACTORY is a great mix of both death growl and the soft conveted choir boy approach. |

I can't stand growling, though I have forced myself to respect it I guess. It's not as bad as commercial music being made without any emotional attachements of course, but it's nothing I'd listen to.

I like both. I prefer a band that utilizes multiple vocal types (male/female, extreme/melodic singing, etc) rather than just one type of vocals.

I enjoy both when used in context. Opeth is one of my favorite bands, and I can easily tolerate the growls and clean vocals, because they definitely complement the music. As for post-metal, clean vocals really can't do the atmosphere justice. The yelling works out well. The darker side of unclean vocals is like screamo. I cannot, absolutely cannot stand the whiny wannabe growls and yelling attempts. Ugh. But in prog, growls are pretty relevant when used in a melodic sense. Clean vocals... well, everybody enjoys those, jeeze.

My favorite bands that "get it right" on the voice/growl thing are:
They both use the growl to accentuate - not dominate - the song. Face it - the human voice isn't meant to scream constantly. It should be used to convey anger, rage, etc. Sparsely, preferably |

I like both - but I think it depends on the song. In some songs, growling really works, others it doesn't, eg. the start of Harlequin Forest by Opeth would sound stupid with growling.
