I finally listened to the DeeExpus albums this morning and I quite enjoyed them. The debut was excellent. The follow-up wasn't quite as good but still an enjoyable listen.

Well, Steve Hogarth hasn't stopped sounding like Steve Hogarth so if that's a dealbreaker it probably won't win you over. But in terms of the instrumental performances, I think it might be the proggiest thing they've done for a long time, maybe more so than even Marbles or Brave at points.

A little tip-off I got from the Marillion forums: apparently the band are using Abbey Road's "Live Here Now" service to record the London gig and have it on sale as a CD immediately after the show!
It'll also be available for mail order purchase and download purchase from here: in case you need to catch a train quickly and don't want to hang around waiting whilst they get the CDRs burned on the day.

Well I just say that Marillion are the greatest band for their fans! I live in Finland and ordered the album at the first day it was possible. Today I got mail from the Racket and there was a download link to STCBM, because they thought it was nice for us hardcore fans to get the album too as they were sending it to the UK fans first (fair enough because there are the GIGS right now in UK!). Thanks Racket, I've been listening it all night and it is simply a stunning album! The chord progression on Sky.. floored me, also everything else on that disc

A big
![]() This echoes many of my thoughts about the gig I saw at Manchester the day after, the first time I'd seen the band since the mid 80s. I considered writing a full review of my own but felt I couldn't really do justice in comparison, and that it would be best not to overdo it and leave Steve's review as a better summary of the current tour. Hogarth was simply outstanding, I have to say he gave the best vocal performance I have ever heard live. As I have seen probably 200 gigs that is some compliment. He is a fabulous frontman. The sound balance was perfect, Rotherey was sublime and the reception the band got was incredible. This is a band that are almost as one with their fans. It's a joy to see. A wonderful aside was when h asked if the crowd had any requests and one wag from the back shouted "how the f**k do you pronounce Trewavas". The crowd and band were in hysterics. The setlist, which was identical to the Cardiff show without Between You & Me, could've been a little better for me personally, as a couple of my favourite albums (AoS and TSE) were omitted completely and they played some of my least favourite songs off others, BUT..... I understand with 17 albums to choose from it's pretty tough. Whilst I don't have STCBM yet, the new stuff sounded fantastic, especially Gaza. What a piece of music that is. Real Tears For Sale was an absolute revelation live, and the version of Neverland sent shivers down my spine throughout. Simply magnificent.

I've had this feeling previously, but I was listening to Anorak Live In the UK last night and while listening to Between You & Me the thought "When did Bono join a prog band?" crossed my mind. Maybe it is just me or maybe it was just that song, but I couldn't help but think that h's voice has a very Bono quality to it.

Cheers Rog, I really appreciate that. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself so much as well. Love that bit about Trewavas ![]() I'll review the new album this coming week. Suffice to say at present it is turning out to be a real gem.

I've got to be honest Scott, I've never got that Bono comparison from that track,. although I have heard it said before funnily enough.

To be fair, I'd say it's the best Marillion song of the pre-Script era. ;) |

It was fun when it was released, but was, in effect, a Genesis clone. By Fugazi, they were moving beyond that, because they were far better than that.

In terms of the version from Market Square Heroes/B-Sides Themselves, I absolutely agree - the production job on that one really highlighted the Genesis connections. In terms of other versions, I think it gets a bad rap. The Fair Deals Studios version (on disc 2 of the Script remaster) is much darker and spookier than anything Genesis did back in the day, and the live versions I've heard tend to lean much more in that direction than in the lighter and airier version from the EP B-side. I'm actually really keen on those renditions; I think the decision to stop playing it was the right one, but more because it didn't fit their musical direction than because of any deficiency with it.

Latest from the band. I will review STCBM in the next week, time willing. However, I can say here that it is a gem, at least 4.5 stars, and highly recommended:

Just received the new album and gave it a listen last night. I like it very much on first listen. A beautifull modern prog album (the first track is 15 minutes!). The whole thing clocks in at about 74 minutes and has no weak tracks imo. Marillions best album since Marbles?!
