no, it's Atomsmasher, there is a mistake in the title. I have a hard copy of the album. Phantomsmasher is the follow-up to James Plotkin's project Atomsmasher.

A noise band called Contortionist Jazz Exotica found my music blog and sent me a cassette tape to review. It is pretty harrowing stuff, but also quite good if you're into horrible, unlistenable noise (which really, who isn't?.)

"Imtriprovisation.

Ashtray Navigations is the main project of Phil Todd, who makes noisy psychedelic improvisation that has strong krautrock connotations to it.

Those Are Pearls That Were His Eyes is the umpteenth release by AN, and is in keeping with their style of long drawn psych wonderings. This album consists of one nearly fifty minute "song" consisting of nothing but oure trippyness. It starts out with a Nurse With Wound influence, with what could easily random pots, pans, spoons, and other assorted kitchenware, being banged around at random, set against an ambient backdrop of a recording of birds and light and airy synth dronings. As the song progresses, the kitchenware goes away, and gets replaced by some guitar dronings and scratches, with the ever constant airy synths. This rather noisy section then suddenly transitions into some lone, floating type guitar playing.

This album is not for the casual Prog fan, but for fans of the noisy side of Psych and Kraut, this album is a treat."

HA! Great to see AshNav on here. Why though are they listed as a US band? They're Leeds-based. I've known Phil since 1995, and the first ever Ash Nav gig was a duo of him and me.

I tend to favor Schoenberg's pre-12 tone works like Verklarte Nacht (the version for string orchestra is a must-hear), Pelleas und Melisande, Gurrelieder, of his atonal works I like Five Pieces for Orchestra. Xenakis is a composer I need to become more familiar with. But he's the ONLY Greek composer that is ever discussed on classical forums it seems.

Another noisemaker is Alfred Schnittke:

Schnittke is probably best known for his polystylism, which is a style he practically invented. John Zorn owes A LOT to Schnittke in this regard.

I can't get into him to be honest. I do however think very highly of his Peer Gynt and many of his film works. I also liked Symphony No. 2. Such a haunting work. But I'm sure you can guess who my favorite 20th Century composer is... Big smile

Shostakovich, Bartok, Ravel, Vaughan Williams, Villa-Lobos, Prokofiev, Janacek, Berg, Stravinsky, Tippett, Szymanowski, Revueltas, Honegger, Britten...are composers I continue to come back to time and time again.

Today I bring you a little known Noise-punk-rock band, the Jaunties.

The Jaunties was lead by Jason Willett, known for his work in 1/2 Japanese and various short lived 80's punk bands.

I really don't know too much other than that about this short lived band.
