At the very least, this thread should be moved to the 'Fun' section...after all, there's bugger all in the way of musical content!!

Fair enough, as long as you DO check 'em out. The great thing about them is they they're partial to a bit of musical pissing around themselves! |

The problem with Trousersnake is that he gets too highbrow and esoteric for me... he looks down his nose at my mundane Neo-Prog and would probably choke if he knew I was listening to 'Pepper's Ghost' at the mo... |

Ooooh... I wouldn't say I look down on neo-prog as such... would you class The Flower Kings as neo-prog? I do, anyway. I just like music to be as wild and creative as possible. Any less and I feel a little cheated... |

The existance of this thread would suggest otherwise . |

If you equate a little light-hearted banter to relieve the utter tedium around here with being childish then Ty1020,all I've got to say is this:

Do you buy Dream Theater albums just to smash them?

For real though, the out-of-control number of DT-related threads is
a little annoying, but not nearly as annoying as the seemingly greater
number of people complaining about them. |

Tony: Speaking personally (i.e., not in my official capacity), let me ask you a question. Suppose for a moment that the admin group decided to create a separate category for prog-metal threads. What, exactly, would you replace them with in the Prog Music Lounge? The reason I ask is this: whatever your answer - which I assume would be some version of "other threads" or "threads about topics other than DT and prog-metal" - why are you, and others, not simply creating those threads now? As I believe fandango pointed out - and I have noted ad nauseam on myriad threads, as well as in the guidelines - if those who dislike DT, prog-metal and the growing number of prog-metal threads simply ignored those threads and created whtaver new threads they thought should be created, or posted only to threads they felt were "appropriate," then the prog-metal threads would quickly disappear onto the second and third pages of the category. How many times do I have to say this before the veterans (and some newbies) "get it?" I'm beginning to think that at least some of the newbies that many of you disdain for their love of prog-metal and DT "get it" better than some of the senior members and collaborators... I happen to like DT (though I certainly don't think they are the greatest thing since The Beatles, much less God's gift to prog) and some other prog-metal groups (including Ark and Opeth), on occasion. As an aside, I personally feel that most prog-metal bands are woefully inconsistent, but that, at their best, they create a legitimate form of prog, and deserve their place here. In that regard, those who love - or hate - prog-metal or a particular band have every right to express their opinions (as long as those debates remain "civil" and do not devolve into personal attack or other violation of the guidelines). And, at this point, since prog-metal is a legitimate form of prog, those discussions properly belong in "Prog Music Lounge," unless (as with any other form of prog) it is clear that it is a recommendation (in which case it would be moved to that category) or an other-than-music discussion (e.g., I moved a thread about DT's lyrics to "Non-Music Prog Lounge," where it properly belonged). I would really like to see the veterans - and the "oppositional" newbies - make a greater effort to welcome the newbies who came to us through prog-metal. Indeed, if you want them to learn about the "history" of prog - and the symphonic prog, folk prog and other groups who created the genre that prog-metal came out of [N.B. You will find that quite a few newbies are just as conversant with King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, and others as they are with DT, Opeth, Pain of Salvation and other prog-metal groups], you are not setting a good example by showing immediate disdain for their taste in music. As Dale Carnegie might say, that is not the way to win friends and influence people. I am not suggesting that prog-metal fans should have a license to simply monopolize any particular category of threads: indeed, that is a violation of the guidelines, and would be dealt with if it were actually occurring. However, although there are in fact an increasing number of prog-metal threads in Prog Music Lounge, (i) they are not so many as to warrant either a separate category or a warning, and (ii) if those who don't like or want those threads started some other (legitimate, please) threads, then the number of prog-metal threads would decrease proportionally. As Rodney King put it so well, "Can't we just all get along?" A little acceptance, patience and humility goes a long way... Peace. |

As others said the problem is not that i hate Dream (which i dont), but
that a lot of members seem to only know them and a couple of other prog
metal bands. So whatever "best ..." question is asked I get at least 5
people giving the DT answer, while most other members actually think
about the question and come up with some band not necessarily their
favorite, but appropriate to the question.
These one-dimensional answers don't help anyone and digest the forum, not only by taking up half of the first page but also by spamming proper threads with "no-brain" answers. |
