Ok,no such luck...................but one can dream cant one?

Can we have a section devoted to you Dream Theater fanboys, preferably in the "Discussions Not Related To Music" section?

You guys could represent your countries in the "Tedium World Championships".....apparently last years's winner spoke for 47 hours on Mike Portnoy's polyrhythmic paradiddles and their relevance to Third World Debt.

It seems that hating DT has become more of a hobby than an opinion. I can imagine the bedrooms of all the haters; a multitude of DT posters with knives in them. Surely all the energy you put into hating a band can be used much more positively.

I dont hate them....I just dont particularly like them.

As for posters in bedrooms.......that kind of somes up the fanboy mentality doesnt it-I'm 43, gave up childish things when I became an adult.

Look at the first page of Prog Lounge, then tell me I'm wrong!

Maybe it would help to have a SEARCH text field right next to the "new topic" button. Perhaps more people would search before they post then. That way we would have less threads of either "fraction".

All I can say Tony, is firstly start some threads about different bands/ themes which are interesting enough to catch peoples attention and thus maintain their shelf-life for several days... what do you want to talk about?

Secondly, don't answer any of the DT threads...if you and other non-DT fans ignored them, then they would slip down the pages more quickly....Voila!

I'd start a thread for you, but on average only 2 people ever respond to mine...and one of them is a rude message from Snow Dog, so I have given up... ..lets hope you have more luck!

Thanks for those thrilling words of advice Fandango.

Have you noticed how fewer people are posting these days.........????????

This is a real issue, that has no real solution.Nobody reads all the way through a thread any more,I have frequently seen the same observation made three or four times without anybody making reference to the previous repeated observation.

Hey Sorry Tony... I keep insulting you on this thread!!  Please accept my humble apologies; that was a bit below the belt!

And if Flowerchild should come back and read this, then it won't make any difference because he will have already reported me for the comment I shoved on his Poll!

The problem with Trousersnake is that he gets too highbrow and esoteric for me... he looks down his nose at my mundane Neo-Prog and would probably choke if he knew I was listening to 'Pepper's Ghost' at the mo...

Ooooh... I wouldn't say I look down on neo-prog as such... would you class The Flower Kings as neo-prog? I do, anyway.

I just like music to be as wild and creative as possible. Any less and I feel a little cheated...

For real though, the out-of-control number of DT-related threads is a little annoying, but not nearly as annoying as the seemingly greater number of people complaining about them.

Tony:

Speaking personally (i.e., not in my official capacity), let me ask you a question.  Suppose for a moment that the admin group decided to create a separate category for prog-metal threads.  What, exactly, would you replace them with in the Prog Music Lounge?

The reason I ask is this: whatever your answer - which I assume would be some version of "other threads" or "threads about topics other than DT and prog-metal" - why are you, and others, not simply creating those threads now?

As I believe fandango pointed out - and I have noted ad nauseam on myriad threads, as well as in the guidelines - if those who dislike DT, prog-metal and the growing number of prog-metal threads simply ignored those threads and created whtaver new threads they thought should be created, or posted only to threads they felt were "appropriate," then the prog-metal threads would quickly disappear onto the second and third pages of the category.

How many times do I have to say this before the veterans (and some newbies) "get it?"  I'm beginning to think that at least some of the newbies that many of you disdain for their love of prog-metal and DT "get it" better than some of the senior members and collaborators...

I happen to like DT (though I certainly don't think they are the greatest thing since The Beatles, much less God's gift to prog) and some other prog-metal groups (including Ark and Opeth), on occasion.  As an aside, I personally feel that most prog-metal bands are woefully inconsistent, but that, at their best, they create a legitimate form of prog, and deserve their place here.

In that regard, those who love - or hate - prog-metal or a particular band have every right to express their opinions (as long as those debates remain "civil" and do not devolve into personal attack or other violation of the guidelines).  And, at this point, since prog-metal is a legitimate form of prog, those discussions properly belong in "Prog Music Lounge," unless (as with any other form of prog) it is clear that it is a recommendation (in which case it would be moved to that category) or an other-than-music discussion (e.g., I moved a thread about DT's lyrics to "Non-Music Prog Lounge," where it properly belonged).

I would really like to see the veterans - and the "oppositional" newbies - make a greater effort to welcome the newbies who came to us through prog-metal.  Indeed, if you want them to learn about the "history" of prog - and the symphonic prog, folk prog and other groups who created the genre that prog-metal came out of [N.B. You will find that quite a few newbies are just as conversant with King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, and others as they are with DT, Opeth, Pain of Salvation and other prog-metal groups], you are not setting a good example by showing immediate disdain for their taste in music.  As Dale Carnegie might say, that is not the way to win friends and influence people.

I am not suggesting that prog-metal fans should have a license to simply monopolize any particular category of threads: indeed, that is a violation of the guidelines, and would be dealt with if it were actually occurring.  However, although there are in fact an increasing number of prog-metal threads in Prog Music Lounge, (i) they are not so many as to warrant either a separate category or a warning, and (ii) if those who don't like or want those threads started some other (legitimate, please) threads, then the number of prog-metal threads would decrease proportionally.

As Rodney King put it so well, "Can't we just all get along?"

A little acceptance, patience and humility goes a long way...

Peace.

As others said the problem is not that i hate Dream (which i dont), but that a lot of members seem to only know them and a couple of other prog metal bands. So whatever "best ..." question is asked I get at least 5 people giving the DT answer, while most other members actually think about the question and come up with some band not necessarily their favorite, but appropriate to the question.
These one-dimensional answers don't help anyone and digest the forum, not only by taking up half of the first page but also by spamming proper threads with "no-brain" answers.

Well, i like DT...'Octavarium' is a good CD.

But occasionally it feels like a 'DT Fanboy' forum here, be honest guys!!

Open mindedness appears have been thrown out the window and awarding EVERY thing DT touch 5 Stars appears to be the order of the day. I love DT, I think they crap on most of the bands out there at the moment, they are talented musicians, but I am sorry, NOT ALL their albums are classics, sorry, its true. There is no way 'Train of thought' should be mentioned in the same breath as 'Close to the edge', 'Dark side of the moon' or 'Foxtrot' etc...they ARE classics and Mr. Portnoy and Mr. Petrucci would likely agree with me. I respect them a huge amount, but they also very probably respect their past and influences...bands like Yes, Floyd and Genesis are why DT EXIST! please understand that guys!

I believe DT have 2 classics...'IAW' and 'SFAM'. not sure either of them should register in the top 50 prog albums of all time though, maybe the top 100.

I would bet a few bucks DT would AGREE with that.

Just playing around for the weekend, breaking some balls-without breaking the rulez

I imagine that if Rush were just "happening" now (remembering the hullabaloo they caused when they first roared into common consciousness) as opposed to the late 70's,the amount of threads related to Rush would probably be enormous, far outweighing the situation we have with DT now. Members are excited and inspired and that can only be a good thing!!

However, what does get up the nose is the swiftness with which these fans get aggressive and display a distinct lack of humour.Just as we non-Dream Theater aficionados should be tolerant of these threads,so the DT fans should be tolerant of a bit of moaning, whingeing and naysaying. If it is all done with a bit of humour and irony then it can be FUN. (and I'm not being hypocritical hereOuch)

As for starting new threads-it doesnt seem to work. I bet no more than 3 people will read this post never mind a thread by the likes of me,Gdub,Tux,James,Jim,Peter,Dan et al. I have publicly demonstrated that many (most?) members just skip from the "opening salvo" to the end of the thread (even some 5 star SuperstarsConfused). The same piece of info,or advice gets repeated, completely independently of what has been written previously.

And, of course, make a reply too long like this one and you've no chance.

Tony:

Forgive me; I wasn't suggesting that you couldn't poke fun at people or their tastes...by all means, do so: after all, your tastes are suspect as well...

What is odd about this conversation is that, at this moment, as I write this post, there are 28 threads on the first page of the Prog Music Lounge, and only 2 are about DT or Octavarium.  And at its "height," there were only 5.  Five out of 28; hardly something to be screaming about.

I believe that the problem here is one of "perception" rather than "reality."  As Tony notes, when a new band or anticipated album comes out, it is likely that the number of threads for that band/album are going to increase, perhaps even exponentially.  But even during the Radiohead debacle and KE9's manic ELP period, there were never more than half a dozen threads out of the 28 that appear on the main page.  Again, hardly something to freak out about.

Yes, it does seem that some, maybe even many, of the newbies and other DT and prog-metal fans are somewhat "myopic" about their taste, or at least seemingly limited.  However, I believe that is balanced by the number of newbies who may have come to PA through prog-metal, but who also have a working - if not better - knowledge of Crimson, Floyd, Yes, ELP, and other seminal and "veteran-approved" () prog bands.

Peace.

Couldn't you add another two "sticky" threads: One about the definition of "Progressive Rock", where you link to various definitions in the internet and quickly explain that it does not mainly mean "innovative", and another one listing the often disputed bands that are not included, like Muse, Meshuggah etc. and a quick reason why they're not there (that explanation ending with "it has been decided, don't bother to ask").

I guess that would decrease the number of new threads as well as their spam percentage

Mike:

Re the "definition" threads, there are usually only one or two at any time, so I don't see it as a big problem.  As noted by me and others, if you are tired of that discussion, simply don't join it.

Re the "disputed" bands, I usually move those threads to the "suggestions" category under "bands and albums" so they don't take up room in the Prog Music Lounge.

Hope that will suffice for the moment.

Peace.

Even more than that Maani.  Look at the Calprog review thread in the Live performances forum for an example.  Here is a great thread with tons of pictures and several different views about 5 bands at a fantastic progressive event and no more than 5 people posted.   Why spend the time "casting pearls before swine" (Btw that is a figure of speach in case anyone trys to make it something else). At Progressive Ears there were six pages of responses with no pictures allowed in the forum posts.  I don't think many people here want to hear about anything new that is outside either 1. Old Classic period bands 2. Dream Theater and or Prog Metal.

The old who is your favorite whatever thereads, Dream Theater and what not threads are plain boring and have been done so many times I don't repond anymore..

Everyone has a right to thier opinon and subject matter I guess but this is just becoming so old.

I think you're tarring Dream Theater fans with one brush.  SOME of us have objective points of view when it comes to their albums (I, for one dislike ToT, and think Octavarium is average).  And to be honest, i'm fairly positive most fans know of plenty of good Prog bands from each era.  Elitism doesn't always make a forum better, you know.

I come here not to discuss my love for Dream Theater or any other prog-metal bands, but instead to vary my musical tastes.  Sure enough, if they come up in a conversation i'll happily talk about them but i'm much more interested in hearing YOUR points of views regarding both old and new music.
