It's not obnoxious when you are a skilled player. The insane micro makes the game.

That will just never be my kind of game. When skill overwhelms strategy in a strategy game, I simply would rather play a game where the application of skill is more rewarding (e.g. Tribes). |

Heh, people QQ about him all the time on the forums, that's why I wanted to try him. Building turrets and pissing people off sounds great. Alas, my computer...
Austin, have you bought runes yet? I finally looked around for some things about it and let me recommend you (and Marco too, really) get armor and magic penetration marks, flat armor seals, flat magic resist (you can do scaling with those if you want), and health or move speed quints in tier one or tier 3. Have the armor and magic pen on page one and page two and there are your AD and AP rune pages. I wish someone had told me that, I have a mishmash of random crap :(

I love using his turrets to spy on enemies willing to gank anyone.

I'm not sure that's really the case. I think that RTS tend to just have a relatively simplistic strategic element. Near optimal strategies work themselves out pretty quickly among the pros, easily being emulated then by all players. Since players employ the best strats, it comes down purely to micro and random elements. I know what you mean though. It just appeals to me personally. I only play RTS strats anymore. |

Today, I tried the TERA open beta. In the end, TERA's combat is a lot like Phantasy Star Online, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, it's a bit slower (bad thing) and lacks the loot, being a Korean MMO with silly crafting systems and junk. It is also Korean MMO in a lot of other ways. The grind isn't so hot (probably put in 5 hours, got to all of level 13). Female characters... well, let's just say I made the ill-fated decision to roll a human female with a giant sword, and she now runs around in Daisy-Dukes and half-exposed double-Ds. *sigh* The game looks pretty good, with a vibrant color palette and some pretty pleasant views. Unfortunately, as soon as you get past the starting island, there's nobody to be found, and the large world really comes back to bite itself in the ass. Oh look, giant city! Too bad I've seen all of 3 people wanderings its streets. The "story" bits are also pretty goddamn awful, with a terrible script narrated by a guy who sounds like Bailey from the Mass Effect series.
Given that TERA is a buy-and-sub game, I think this one is a big fat "PASS". Currently downloading Diablo 3 beta. Will remark on it tomorrow. Edited by Gamemako - April 20 2012 at 23:29 |

So, Diablo 3.
I haven't played a Diablo game in almost 15 years, and I can't say I'm all that nostalgic. There are some interesting systems, but in the end, the mousekiller genre hasn't aged all that well in my mind. And no, I didn't play Torchlight. D3 gives you multiple methods of autoattacking, but prevents you from swapping them on the fly. Positioning doesn't work right for middle-ranged attacking; my monk's slightly-ranged attack combo has him occasionally walk right up to opponents, which he is terrible at (the combo has very little knockback). Trying to target opponents without accidentally moving your character over to the opponent gets annoying in a way I never remember happening in mousekillers past. Or maybe it's just the Monk class. Who knows. It is nevertheless annoying. Honestly, I just get the feeling that I'd enjoy D3 a lot more with a controller, and that is a terrible, terrible thing to say. You know, I don't think I've really liked a Blizzard game since Starcraft... |

I didn't think Diablo 2 was very good, to be honest. Blizzard's games are so grindy and boring. And that really is a terrible thing to say!
Gamemako, have you ever played League of Legends? We need a PA 5 man team to overcome the drooling morons of that community. And it is free to play! Although, as Jerry Holkins once said about F2P games, it is "free to play" in the same sense that a nightcrawler on a hook is "free to bite".

No, I haven't. It's a sort of MMORTS, isn't it? I'm not just that fond of competitive games in the first place, let alone competitive RTS games. Appreciate the offer and all, but it's just not my cup of tea. |

That's basically what I meant. I didn't really enjoy Diablo 2 all that much. Too hack 'n' slash for my liking. And yes, StarCraft is Blizzard's last great game. I've not played StarCraft 2 though. Edited by VanderGraafKommandöh - April 22 2012 at 09:35 |

I was reminded yesterday about PSO2's imminent arrival. From the alpha vids, methinks that game will be the death of me. I will also recruit everyone for it because it will supposedly be F2P.
//EDIT By imminent, I mean probably fall or winter of this year. Edited by Gamemako - April 22 2012 at 10:51 |

While it is "competitive" I guess, that's not really an accurate description. You only control one character, the matches are 5v5, and you can't build anything. It's more like the PvP elements of an RPG in an arena with rounds. But yeah, MOBAs are not for everyone.

I don't really play online games, so I wouldn't be interested in it anyway. Hence why I haven't heard of it (well, I have but I'd forgotten it existed).

PSO was Dreamcast action-RPG circa 2000. You could actually play it entirely offline should you choose to do so.
