I'm with Henry on this one - trolls are usually your common or garden keyboard heroes, frantically trying to attract attention, shouting 'look at me, look at me', whilst waving their arms to prevent drowning in a sea of their own inadequacy.

As a forum moderator, they can be a thorn in the side occasionally, but once identified, deleted with extreme prejudice.

Well yes, from a moderators perspective, I can see why they may be a problem.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Not a problem as such, Andy, more an occasional irritation; an e-mosquito, if you will... causes irritation, but nothing a good slap won't get rid of.

That is the common perception, yes - thing is, as we know, they are two very different things, neither of which we ever have or ever will tolerate here.

This common perception will probably become the new meaning, Jim. Especially as it is now being discussed by the media.

The old timers around here will remember KE9. Now, that was a troll, and also an 'internet bully' I believe he actually sent threatening PM's to other users, who were critical of ELP!

Do we have any of his posts cached anywhere? I'd love to read them again. I thought he was quite funny, until I decided he was actually potentially dangerous..

The really dangerous ones are those who manage to gather a coterie of admirers/followers, despite their forum abuse; there was one here many years ago, but that member was dispatched to the wastes as soon as it became apparent how unpleasant an individual they were.

Now there's a name from the past I'd forgotten...

I post this after reading the grim wikipedia entry on trolling, which identifies it as a dangerous anti-social activity that borders on criminality, and is buttressed by quotes that the internet needs to be policed. Ouch

I would get stupid from it, or even "uninhibited," and vulgar, but it is not particularly damaging to me, and I think many people on sites like ESPN and news sites read the comments just for the ridiculous trolling, which is often entertaining. On a site like this it is more disruptive, but a kind of perversion?

What does the forum think?

You didn't provide a Wiki link so I went to look it up.  The one thing I didn't find was a definition applicable to the internet. LOL
Troll (research station), a Norwegian Antarctic research station on Queen Maud Land
Troll (album), a 2005 album by Norwegian folk metal band Lumsk
Troll (gay slang), a slang term for gay men who wander about looking for sexual partners
Troll (automobile), a Norwegian car manufacturer
Karl Troll (1865-1954), Austrian architect
etc.
Oh wait, here it is:
Troll (Internet), an internet term for a person who, through willful action, attempts to disrupt a community or garner attention and controversy through provocative messages.

Ignoring the person will generally derail them.

There is something about being able to be anonymous that does encourages people to behave that way.  I myself have annoyed a few people on this site, but I am not hiding behind a mask.

Isn't it too transparent to be a mask?
Anyway, apart from being annoying I hope I haven't crossed the line into being abusive.

Occasionally irritating, less often funny.

Walter actually got on my nerves, because he was so stupidly trying to defend the indefensible, without listening to any cogent arguments to the contrary.

I'd consider KE9 more like a very susceptible ultra-fanboy that became a bully,(because he couldn't read the last critic about his faves), rather than a troll per se...

VelvetClown was more of a troll, Wallace as well.

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

I don't shy away from being annoying but I do try to draw the line at being disrespectful.  Hopefully I have accomplished that.  Smile

It's an essential part of the online ecosystem. You may as well find Earth's nitrogen cycle disruptive.
