I personally think that's a little harsh - I may not like LGG's music, but I can see the appeal; I think there is a fair degree of talent behind the hype and the image (all of which is pretty much borrowed from old Madonna videos then stuck through a 'R' rated filter). Sure it's manufactured, but she knows exactly what she's doing.
No problem with her at all. |
Not only that, but, what the hell is the "music knowledge" that people would have to be able to ignore Lady GaGa? Knowing a few prog bands? Oh yes that's knowing music.
I understand that pop music is in a way selected for the masses by the labels and media who decide what to push and how to push it while ignoring other acts. But please don't think that without this veil all people in the world would suddenly group together like a flock to hear, listen, venerate and adore progressive rock.

I was going to comment about Lady Gaga but then I realised the topic had completely changed to which North Korean dictator is best.
But I'll go anyway.
My mother thinks lady gaga is incredible, because she can play piano. And I'm like "so what"?
Her latest album was designed to make profit, 4 or 5 catchy singles with good melodies, the rest of the album, honest sh*t. It really shows how the idea of an album isn't cared about any more, because artists make all their money from singles.
Another thing is. Is that she claims Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are her favourite bands, and her biggest influences are Elton John and David Bowie…. So why does she write such sh*t? If she was really being true to her music, she would write an album in the style she performs it, acoustic, on a piano. But that doesn't make much money. So she doesn't do it. It's just pathetic.

Cant imagine way we are interested in this at all, does it matter what stunts media pull to sell pop music.
Cant be a surprice after 50 years of pop radio/TV, that they promote whatever the industry tells them.
If a freaking 2 years, sold billions of albums playing 2 cords, media would shout wonderchild.

I couldn't give a damn what anybody else listens to. I listen to all kinds of crap. I f they want to listen to this donkey face then that's their prerogative. But all she has going for her is her outrageousness. It baffles me why Howard Stern likes her but has slammed Madona so much in the past on his radio and TV shows. Lady Ga Ga's " music " panders to musically illiterate audiences wheras jazz, classical and some progressive rock is embraced by educated and somewhat better educated audiences. I did a biography for the band Janus with co-operation with Colin Orr here on PA better known for 1972s Gravedigger back in 2010. On a 2002 CD they had a 15 year old female vocalist Nathalie Brown that just blew me away. The track Slave Girl & Owner is available for streaming in the Janus entry.check it out . There are literally hundreds of these prodigies in every corner of the planet. Nevena from Bulgaria is another example she did a verson of Omega's Girl With the Pearls In Her Hair that even freaked the band out. All donkey face has going is her stupid stage act and her goofy costumes.

My missus thinks she is wonderful.
Thus, when she has a concert on TV, revenge is taken on me for perpetual prog, and it is shown.
I retreat to the safety and comfort of my study and prog archives

But then again if you watch MTV's "Best musicians and artists of all time", seems like 99% of them in their list is your Lady gaga's, Madonnas, Coolio, Ice T, Snoop Dog, Eminem, Justin Bieber, etc... and with incredibly thought-provoking lyrlcs like "Yeah baby baby baby baby baby, come and gimmee", how can you disagree with their overflowing talent? Mostly always just American pop stars. Sure you have your few token UK name acts like Rolling Stones, Beatles, Zeppelin, U2, The Who but they don't really wander outside of that territory. You'll never hear any italian or french or south american or japanese or swedish, etc.. acts in their lists... Me thinks it's because MTV is being paid by the American networks/music business who release all of the bands in the "top 100 lists", etc... No money to be made trying to endorse Le Orme (who has good pop stuff which sounds better to my ears than Lady Gaga pop). Basically, "you scratch my back and I'll put you on our 'top 100 best artists of all time' program designed to brainwash the viewers into thinking the only bands worth listening to and buying are the one's we advertise in our 'top 100' lists :-) Don't gimmee that 'top 100 artists' of all time stuff :-)

So you pick your music based on how attractive the singer / band is? Bit odd for someone who likes prog. Generally, prog fans tend to look past image! Although, some of us appreciate a bit of theatricality and she certainly doesn't lack on that.
She is talented. She has different ideas on how to present herself, and I like that. If she continues on the same theme like Madonna, she could easly be around for 20 years. However, I am a bit disappointed in recent stuff being bog standard hi-energi ultra conservative disco. I did think she had a bit more about her but I may be wrong.
In the end I'm not bothered one way or the other. Her stuff is for young girls and boys who want a laugh. Like many pop star before her and there is a place for that. One day she may do her Ray of Light.
