So many of you cannot wait for the next marillion album. I think that this is obvious to all of us.

Yet... Pete Trewavas and Marillion (and Eric Blackwood) came out with a new "project" called Edison's Children which features every member of Marillion and was called by Lazland... the official reviewer of Prog Archives... 


"Staggeringly good, and a must for all prog fans to hear at least once in their lives".

i've read plenty of complaints that they haven't heard anything new in awhile and when they finally put out this fantastic new project that Lazland calls one of the greatest records he's ever heard ...

nobody says anything about it.

marillion fans should be jumping up and down about this. it is one of the greatest things this band has done. 

and don't worry that this is what is taking away from marillion writing a new record... 
this was all done amidst tours of transatlantic and marillion conventions and not during their "recording and writing time". 

so embrace it. because as lazland said... this is absolutely freakin amazing!

Happy New Year to you all! As the business of the world grinds back into life after the festive season, I'm getting "our" record company, KScope, on the phone enthusing at the reaction from its worldwide distributors to the advance copies of "Not The Weapon But The Hand" - the album Richard Barbieri (Porcupine Tree, Japan, Jansen Barbieri Karn) and I just managed to finish before Christmas.
SO that's got the year off to a good start!
Sound samples are up on the site (just click through the links) if you're wondering how it sounds.. Richard and I will be meeting up next week to sign the first 1000 copies (ouch!), so if you'd like a signed copy pre-order soon from Racket as I believe preorders are already nearing the 1000 mark. Exciting times..

I'm popping to Barcelona at the weekend for a show with Catalan rock- star Pep Sala (sold out) and then, weekend after that, Le Divan Du Monde in Paris for which I believe there are still a few tickets remaining.. Voulez vous mes amis?

Then it's off to Real World with the Marillos for another week at the (some would say "ultimate") residential studio where we'll begin honing a fine collection of baby songs into grown-ups for your lucky ears later in the year..

On Saturday the 4th February I'll be guesting with my good friends Mr So & So at The Peel in Kingston. Rich Harding will be singing a couple of old Marillion songs with us as well. Should be a lot of fun. Hope some of you can make it down.

On the evening of Sunday the 26th February my British Guitar Academy band (with special guests Tin Spirits) will be playing at the Hobble at the Waterside theatre all day music event in Aylesbury. This is probably the last BGA event for some time.

Well, this is a surprise. A few weeks back I finally got around to taking the plunge and re-joining the Web UK, which I'd been a member of briefly but drifted away from when I went to university and student budgeting meant cutting back on inessentials. I'm fairly sure I signed up after the cut-off point to get the 2011 Christmas issue so I was reconciled to not getting the Christmas DVD they put out of the German Space Day concert, but when I got home from work this evening I found a copy of the Christmas issue with DVD waiting in my mailbox! It came as a complete surprise so I must remember to thank the Web admins for that.

Hey all, so Marillion is one of those bands that continues to grow on me.  When I'm in the right mood, I'll put something on by them and it will be nice background music.  Every once in a while, a song will stick out and make it in to one of the play lists that gets a regular rotation.  At some point over the summer, "Neverland" really clicked with me and has hung out on a semi regular play list since then.

I happened to hear it the other day and it clicked on a new level with me, such a beautiful song and I noticed that the lyrics of the first half of the song are really sweet, though I couldn't figure out quite what most of the repeated parts at the end of the song were.  So today I finally took a few minutes to look them up, I sat there for a few minutes not really understanding them . . . when it finally clicked I got the hugest smile on my face.  I kind of felt silly for not getting it sooner, but still, what a neat concept for a song.  Kudos to the Marillion folk.

That's a nice post Tom, and I agree with every word.

The two bookends to Marbles are amongst the finest pieces of music it has been my pleasure to own, and in addition to the wonderful words, special mention should go to Rothery for his finest moment on record, which is saying something.

Once you get the lyrics, you agree with Mark Kelly, that this is not a concept album, rather a deeply thoughtful work with Hogarth's childhood love of a game as the glue around the work.

Just got my first Marillion album(s) a few weeks ago. The thing is, I found this "compilation" that included both "Script for a Jester's Tear" and "Misplaced Childhood" for the price of one, so I thought this was the prefect time to get to know them. The downside was that "Script" didn't include all the bonus tracks, which I have read are really brilliant too. However, so far I listened more of "Script", and I really liked it a lot, just about all of it was very good, only "Garden Party" was kind of weaker. Still have to listen more to "Misplaced Childhood", still it seems to be very good too (though I predict I'll end up liking "Script" more). I had read that Fish sounded a lot like Peter Gabriel, yet I didn't expect him to sound so much like Gabriel (sadly, for me that is a downside, since I don't really like Gabriel's singing so much), however, it's a shame Genesis didn't pick Fish for singer on "Calling all Stations" (I read on wikipeda that he had been at least considered).

Still, I guess I'll be getting the other two Fish era albums later on, perhaps even "Script for a Jester's Tear" once again, with the bonus tracks. Then I'll see if I want the get some more.

If you really like Fish-era Marillion I can heartily recommend the Early Stages boxed set of live shows, which I personally think contains better performances of the most significant bonus tracks from Script (the Market Square Heroes single, comprising Market Square Heroes, Grendel and Three Boats Down from the Candy). Or if you don't want to splurge on that set you could go for Recital of the Script, which is a 2CD set of a Script-era live performance, but then again Early Stages is incredibly reasonably priced these days for the amount of material you get with it.

I'll look forward to hearing your thoughts on Clutching At Straws, I think it's one of the best things they've ever done.

I've delved quite a bit into Marillion since my last post and I must say, "Misplaced Childhood" is the worst place to start your Marillion collection. After hearing the other Fish-era records, I can certainly say that I enjoy the other three albums a lot more. In fact, even "Misplaced Childhood" has grown on me a bit recently ... but not as much as the others. I haven't delved into any of the Hogarth albums, yet, and don't really plan to.

I got to say, Misplaced Childhood is my least favourite of the Fish-era albums. There's some great stuff on there, mind, but I feel that the concept kind of fizzles out towards the end and I can't stand White Feather.

Totally agree. White Weather is definitely my least favourite song on the album and is probably one of my least favourite Fish era Marillion songs. Not a good way to the end the album, in my opinion. I started with Misplaced Childhood as my first Marillion album and it kind of turned me off at first, but after multiple listens it finally clicked. I do agree, though, that Misplaced is not really a good place to start. I'd say leave that for Script or Fugazi.

It's strange, but I always thought that Misplaced was the ideal place for new listeners to get into the band, if only because of the recognisable tracks on it.

Well, I do have a lot of albums I want to get, and I've been going slowly (or at least, slower that I'd like to). But I guess I'll want to get the rest of the Fish era Marillion soon enough, even something live (so I expect to check out your recomendations, soon I hope... I guess it would be better to get those instead of getting "Script" once again). Then I may want to get some live Hogarth era album... I have no idea how he sings, but I'm hoping I may like his singing a bit better than Fish's (though not his music with the band)... also, I don't know if they have live songs with Hogarth with Fish's era material, i guess it would be interesting to listen to it. As a matter of fact, I'm really fond of live albums... often, I find the songs have more energy, and sometimes they are further developed compared to the studio versions; and sometimes I find live albums a good way to start getting to know a band, because with a live album I can get an overview of their better songs and see which albums I want to explore first, without feeling I waste money buying a compilation album with the exact same songs (and versions of them) that I will later get with the full albums (if I like what I hear enough).

In terms of live albums readily available, you can't go too wrong with the three recentish - fish-era reissues from EMI: Recital of the Script, Live from Loreley and The Thieving Magpie. Loreley covers the most ground in terms of albums.
 
For Hogarth-era live albums, there are a huge number that have been issued, often through the band's own Racket label. Not all are readily available though. Made Again is an earlyish live double album that includes a full run-through of the Brave album as well as a couple of Fish-era tracks, but isn't one of my favourites. Albums like Tumbling Down The Years (includes Garden Party) or the excellent companion Size Matters (includes Kayleigh/Lavender/Lothian) can be bought from te official website. Your best bet for Hogarth-era live though may well be the recently released Best.Live which includes some Fish written stuff and a selection of tracks from a number of Hogath albums;
