I don't hate the game. It's fine for what it is, but it doesn't excite me or glue me to my seat waiting to see what will happen next.

And if there are deep consequences and reactions, I haven't come across 'em.

Edit: I never said Jade Empire was universally "better". The combat system is more engaging to me. Admittedly, I probably won't play it for a good long while. I really liked it when I played it a couple years back, but I doubt I could love it another time through.

Jade Empire allowed you to have a love triangle with the two female leads. That elevates it to greatness in my book. WinkLOLLOLLOL

But yeah, your decisions will have more weight when you get later in the game. Some decisions seem to have clear-cut answers, though, because you aren't familiar enough with the world to know why you'd pick the alternate. Replaying the game gives you a different perspective, though I doubt you'd really care to do that (if you even finish it the first time through). Also funny when you know the characters and go back through other origins. Female City Elf is my favorite. Especially with what you can tell Cailan when you first enter Ostagar. Regardless, DA:O is not a perfect game, but I enjoyed it. Combat was right up my alley, though, since I love old school tactical games and RPGs. Which reminds me, I really need to get Frozen Synapse!

Hah, you know, I started to mention BioShock but decided I should stick with just Dark Souls lest I confuse you. If you can get past the soul-crushing difficulty, I think you'd really dig Dark Souls. Also, you might try the old Team ICO games, ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, if you can find a PS2 or PS3 (they were re-released in a double pack for PS3).

I really enjoy the Assassin's Creed series so far, considering I care about what's going on and the gameplay is quite intriguing to me. I loved God of War, lots of Final Fantasy games (and sure, you could level a bevy of criticisms against the series, it's mostly for nostalgia and comfort.), I loved Bioshock, Mass Effect 1 and 2, Jade Empire, KotOR, Super Metroid, Gears of War, Half-Life 2, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Resident Evil 4 (for the gameplay, alone), many Legend of Zelda games - 2-D and 3-D, select FPS games that aren't Call of Duty, Fallout I, II, and III, Chrono Cross, Mega Man X, and a boatload of games from the past handful of decades.

How on God's green Earth can anyone like Chrono Cross? Ouch

Anyway, did you ever get around to Deus Ex: Human Revolution? It's not perfect, but it's really fun and at least worthy of wearing the Deus Ex name (unlike the travesty that was Invisible War).

With regard to MMX, are you fond of action games like that in general or just side-scrollers? Shadow Complex is a decent side-scroller. Alternatively, if you have access to a PS2, Zone of the Enders 2: The Second Runner is an entertaining game (though the anime drivel posing as a story is pretty awful). It's also supposed to see PS3 and 360 re-release some time in the coming year.

I probably only love Chrono Cross because of nostalgia, but the folks over at IGN, or Folk, singular, love it - granting it a 9.7, which is higher than either Bioshock, Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption, Dragon Age, Arkham Asylum, etc.

It has widespread acclaim most places I've read, but that's just a figure.

I'm not too into most side-scrollers unless there are certain inherent aspects like the sense of claustrophobic exploration in The Metroid series or the hectic science fiction romp of the X and Zero mega man games, or the rpg type Castlevanias (especially Symphony of the Night, Dawn of Souls, and Portrait of Ruin).

When I first read a synopsis of Dark Souls I almost salivated. It sounds right up my alley in almost all respects.

Too bad I don't expect to afford a new video game for more than a quarter of a year. Three more months or so! Woohoo for having a f**kin' family suck up all your money, whee!

Yeah, it was widely praised by critics at the time, but most people I know aren't fond of it today. On its own, it was convoluted and had a terrible battle system, but was still alright. As a sequel to Chrono Trigger, though, it was a sore disappointment. Not like Invisible War was a disappointment, but still. I think I'd have liked it a lot more if it weren't for the battle system that made me want to shoot myself.Dead

Also, hey by the time you can afford to pick it up, Dark Souls will be $20 anyway. Big smile

Yeah, that guy is moderately retarded.  I've only just started the game, but already want to smack him

I don't, but I'm grabbing some stuff on Steam right now (Magicka, Dungeons of Dredmor) and I'll happily grab you a copy if you'd like Add me on Steam and I'll send it across when I've got it: https://steamcommunity.com/id/WhisperIneffable

Edit: Just bought the gift and it's in my inventory. I'll send it across whenever you add me.

Dungeon Defenders? I played the heck out of that for a week or so before it got old, which is a good track record for me. I felt similarly to Orcs Must Die, only with less interest. It was more action-oriented, less strategic.

Think of a game of Warcraft III's Wintermaul Tower Defense crossed fluidly with A World of Warcraft like sensibility (no, it's not an MMO. It's a Tower Defense action RPG hybrid) I'd give it a B+ for being fairly well built, addicting, and quite difficult. Not worth spending a lot of money or effort on, but good, semi-strategic fun that's just fast paced enough to hit ya. That being said, I haven't played it in over a month and don't feel guilty. That's my take on the cutesy wootsy Dungeon Defenders.

I also tasted Terraria, which was intriguing in a sort of metroid meets legos kinda way. It's quirky but I doubt I'll be playing it much more. My goddamn copy of Arkham Asylum was shipped by gamestop and it doesn't work so I've gotta print off a receipt, take a trip up to the nearest store, then trade it in for a functioning copy.

Another game I think fits into this discussion is Braid, which actually blew me away, from the pretty , pastoral visuals to the subtle, emotive music and, of course, the brain-slamming temporal puzzlers.

I'll do my best.  Hopefully I will.

No time currently to do so though.  Maybe later this week.

Six hours played of Binding of Isaac and I still haven't beaten the game. RAGE. I almost got it when the game had mercy on me and gave me a dollar, but I stupidly got Brimstone and got owned by Mom.

I'm starting to get moderately hooked on Terraria, I think.  I'm only playing on a "small" world and there is so much to explore it's sort of ridiculous.

I'm also enjoying The Witcher more than I expected to

The Witcher isn't that bad really.  It's just the odd combat system needs getting used to.

I use a mouse though, so it's not as easy as having a gamepad.

Huh? The Witcher is PC-only. Everyone plays with keyboard and mouse.

I know but some people use a gamepad even on PC.

By the way, what's The Witcher 2 like?  Just curious.

I don't think my machine can play it though.  It's for future reference.

I have just realised might mate gave me a copy of Mount & Blade but I've never even installed it.  I noticed Joel likes Mount & Blade: Warband.

Is it worth trying at some point?
