Christmas message from the chaps:

Phew! So 2011 is almost over - what a year that was! Thanks to everyone who:

Came to see us in concert
Came to a convention
Bought tickets for concerts in 2012
Shopped online at Marillion.com
Listened to our music

We feel like the band (and the feeling from the fans) has gone from strength to strength this year which, after so many years, is an amazing thing to feel. Thank you all for keeping the faith and keeping OUR faith fueled to the max. We owe you so much.

2012 promises to be SPECIAL on a number of fronts. We're looking forward to the WORLD TOUR (the first dates have gone up at www.marillion.com/tour) but most of all we're looking forward to getting back into the studio and finishing off our NEW ALBUM. (Some great music is on it's way..) We'll be sharing our plans for its release early in the year but, until then, we will try to keep you updated with everything that's going on.

We will be launching a shiny new website in January which we hope you'll all enjoy. It's looking great in development.

So, in short, WE CAN'T WAIT. 2012 is going to be a killer year for Marillion.

A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.

Pete, Ian, Mark, H and Steve

I'm properly excited about the new album - it'll be the first time in a while that I've bought a Marillion album on the first day (or preordering, if they do that) since the Anoraknophobia days. I'm glad I drifted back and discovered the Marbles-and-later stuff when I did, it's really won me over.

I am currently viewing last year's Christmas present from Marillion, Ding Dong Loreley on High.  Has anybody heard anything regarding the 2011 Christmas present from the band?

Excitement is permitted on this thread, believe me!

The word is that the new album will be ready next year - let's hope.

I just found out our family vacation is planned to run through the 23rd of June, causing me to miss the Marillion Chicago shows. I am trying to decide if I want to ditch out on the last two days of vacation to get home for the show. It is a big family vacation, with all of my wifes extended family. We do this every year, so it isn't like my absence from the last day would be noticed. Well, my kids notice, but maybe I will drag my daughter with me. Her last (and first) concert was Yes, and her name is Kayleigh. It only seems the right thing to do, right?

Something occurred to me when I was browsing the Marillion.com website and saw that they had set lists going some time back. Flicking through them, it seems to me that the band have been slowly but surely upping the instances of Fish-era songs at gigs. It's not like you're necessarily going to see several of them in one show, but it does seem as though these days you have good odds of seeing them perform a single Fish song per show - usually Slainte Mhath or Sugar Mice - whereas before 2009 or so it would be a rare show indeed that saw a performance of a Fish-era track.

Between this and the band's eagerness to play the prog stage at High Voltage back in 2010, it's got me thinking. Is it just me, or do they seem a bit less driven to distance themselves from their early work than they were, say, around the time of Anoraknophobia? It really seems as though the band has got to a place where they're comfortable acknowledging their roots and are happy to identify at least a subset of their current work as still being prog.

I dunno, maybe I'm just seeing things, but if I'm right it might mean very interesting things for their next album.

Agree with Warthur. The same thing occured to me when Hogarth appeared in Classic Rock Presents Prog talking about his favourite Prog Bands. After High Voltage their Web--mag was titled - "For Those About to Prog". Great cover with Steve Rothery.

I think that you are right. There was a period, around Radiation & Marillion.Com when they tried to describe themselves as more of a Radiohead type band, and less of a prog band. I get the feeling that they are all more comfortable with the label now.

It almost seems to me like they have actually found an area of Prog that fits them. They have a sound that is all their own, it is modern, but it is hard to deny it is actually Prog. No, it is not Prog of the symphonic form, but it is a very progressive sound. They found a way to incorporate all of the things they were using from the joining of H, and still make these long, epic and intense songs. They quit trying to be anything other than what they really were, and they became a Prog band once again.

And weren't they comparing themselves to Massive Attack a lot at around the time of Anoraknophobia?

It seemed to be reflected in the music too, particularly on Radiation - they seemed to be deliberately downplaying the progressive aspects of their sound, which meant they ended up seeming rather self-conscious and embarrassed - not something that's ever helpful in performing artists. I suspect Marbles was the tipping point - they took a risk and went back to creating something more prog-minded, and the warm reception it got made them realise they didn't need to compare themselves to anyone except themselves.

I'd in fact argue that in the H-era - particularly from Holidays In Eden on - Marillion are best approached as a crossover prog band as opposed to a purely neo-prog band, in that since then they've been influenced by a much wider range of pop and rock traditions than during the Fish era. The balance tipped towards those other influences and away from prog for a while, and it's tipping back towards prog now, but the prog was always there and the other influences were always there too.

Hello Freaks and Anoraks, my first time here! Seems like this is the place for me to be Smile

It was New Year's eve in 1986 and I was 17! Mom was away so I invited all my friends to our home and it all went a littttttle too far.. Boys and girls too drunk.  You get the picture? It was the time of golden VHS and I was recording this concert (German Open Air Festival show from summer of '85) that was coming from Finnish tv. My mom got back, found all these drunken people all over the place and after serious yelling stopped also the VHS-recording that she found was going on.

Couple of days later, when everything was ok again,  I watched the tape and among all the other artists, there were also this very odd band. I was really into heavy metal at that time and suddenly this mysterious keyboard sound that was coming out of the very old tv set of ours was something that I wasn' t really experienced never ever before. Pseudo Silk Kimono of course! The singer had very strange red stripes painted at his face too.. Very mysterious!! That tape ended just a little bit later (MOM!!!). But those few seconds are the reason why I am writing this!

Now, f..kin 25 years later, I'm still absolutely in love with this amazing band! I love Fish-era (saw them in Stockholm with the tall Scott at Clutching-tour, amazing!)! But I must say that h-era is far more important nowadays, especially after being in my very first Weekend at Port Zelande this year! It was so very amazing experience and so sure will be there next time too!!

More later!

Cheers, Api

By the way, VERY nice Round Table we have here; truly enjoyed reading your stories!! Happiness must be the Road Wink

I agree that they are crossing genres, but I also think that is what makes Prog what it is. Early Prog was basically crossing classical with rock. Some bands seem to mix up Jazz (Crimson). It always seems like it is the crossing of genres, and then where you take those crossings to. IMO Marillion was trying to find direction with Holidays. Seasons was basically a band trying to prove something, that they didn't NEED that old voice. That album comes across as a "see, we can do Prog, we can do Metal, we can to Pop, we can do this, that, and the other thing."
Brave was the band finally finding themselves again, but with the added voice. They also seemed to be following a pattern, of sorts. I would almost argue that the first three H releases, possibly four, mimmick the Fish releases.
I think the Radiohead era was more or less due to Radiohead becoming so highly respected and Marillion seeing how they can be artsy AND enormously successful. Plus, Radiohead sounded a bit like that era of Marillion in tone. It was almost a natural fit in a way.
Oh heck, I am rambling. I know what I really want to say, but am having a hard time expressing it.
IMO, by the way, Neo-Prog has always been Prog wanting to be Pop. I enjoy much of it, but that stuff just seemed like the bands were all looking for hits. New Marillion never feels like they are searching for a hit, even though songs like "Genie" and "Fantastic Place" could easily be number one hits if people would just listen. But it always sounds like they are doing exactly what they want to be doing, and it fits inside a greater picture.
