I think.....I think....that he is saying that all we are posting are our opinions (we know that, doesn't really need stating) and then as an example he gives his (wrong) opinion on an album we are not discussing.

The thing I love about Dream Theater is that, every album, they come up with something new. EVERY album. I do agree that Systematic and Black Clouds had some points of contact, but those were the shorter songs (the ones written to be singles). Dramatic Turns, for its turn, seems generic: every time I listen to the album I think about some song from either the Kevin Moore or Derek Sherinian years and I do not like that; Dream Theater were supposed to be an original band, with original ideas every album they put out and I don't see that many new things here.
This is the first album since Falling into Infinity I have troubles getting through it all in one piece: I usually skip songs, which is something I don't do in any of their other albums!
Don't get me wrong, it isn't a bad album, but it isn't very good either, just average. The thing is, in my opinion, the album has recieved so much praise because it does not take any risk at all, they play it safe all along! If you like more of the same, then fine, it is your thing; I like it myself some times. However, Dream Thetare is one of the few bands that I simply did not expected this kind of thing to happen at all, which is why I am so disappointed with this album.

I can think of a few moments that are new for DT on the new album. For one, how about the "tickle" section during the intro of Lost Not Forgotten? |
Don't they have one of those in almost every album since Images and Words? And besides that, and now that is a matter of my personal taste, I didn't liked how that turned out to be; it is terrible and the rest of the song isn't much better also.
Or most of Bridges In The Sky? |
OK, Bridges in the Sky is phenomenal, as is Outcry and On the Backs of Angels, but that's 29 minutes out of 77!
I admit, however, that they could have mixed it up in the structure/arrangement department.
|
There are many things I would change about the album, but mayber if it was shorter (merely by taking off of it some songs), it would have been a much better experience in general.

For me. This album has some very good music interludes. Problem is they are inside some very boring songs.

But to me for DT prog metal I enjoy Train of Thought more than BC&SL. Endless Sacrifice, In the Name of God and Stream of Cons are DT at their prog metal best. |

I agree with a lot of this.....So many people were beyond excited at the release of ADToE, that in some places it was like a dry hump for me.....I skip thru a lot of the album. I've said before at how I get bored less than half way thru say Outcry, and even when they played that live it was a bore.
We, as fans, really have no idea at how disrupted the band was after Portnoy decided to leave, and the krapp that followed. I can imagine the disruption of just auditioning a new drummer and how that may have turned their world upside down for months.
Then, to me, to rush and release a new album with a new drummer, and reports are that Mangini was not even in NY for most of the studio work, all his parts were done separate and via email......mehhhh....I for one would have put more effort into the whole project. I just think LaBrie was looking to move on and get an album out to put something in between them and the Portnoy issue.
Part of me has always agreed with the original Portnoy arguement.......Dream Theater needed a break. I still think they need one.......I'm sure their families would appreciate it too.
I still think it is a 3.5 album, nowhere close to BC&SL, SFAM or SDOIT. I really don't know what would have changed had Mangini been physically present for the whole process, I mean he certainly does not command the production/creation process like Portnoy had done...I guess time will tell.
I'm actually more interested in what Portnoy will do in 2012 than what DT will do in 2013.

I don't know, his projects so far were not much better to my ears. . . . Adrenaline Mob was a snorefest, Neal Morse's Testimony 2 is hellish to say the least (as bad or worse than Lifeline; I am VERY surprised to see it being so highly regarded), etc. And don't forget that LaBrie did most, if not all of his vocal work in Canada, so only Rudess, Petrucci and Myung were actually in the studio wile the album was in the making. This only adds to my negative stance towards LaBrie, really, because, let's face it, there is not anything special with the singing and he did a whole lot of drama to be able to do his thing in Canada, away from the rest of the band, for the album to have a final result much like the one we have in every othe release since Six Degrees.

^ Ohh krapp...yes Adrenaline Mob was HORRIBLE!!!! I think Mike got that message pretty quickly. He really needs to drop the thought of becoming the next Black Sabbath.
I forgot about LaBrie's laying the vocals in Canada.......you are right. Morse is in a different category, I like his stuff but you canot be in the same mood to listen to him as DT.
Well at this point all we can do is have a wait and see attitude with Dream Theater. I just think if they really wanted to close the door on the whole Portnoy debacle and show the fans a new face, they could have spent more time on the new album and really blown us away.....but they did not so the door stays ajar.

CCVP, you seem to have a lot of problems with the making-of ADTOE more than the actual music itself.
Besides Testimony 2 (which is a great album (just as bad as Lifeline???)) Mike's recent projects haven't gotten me excited. Even the new MMPLM (Flying Colors) album is now lower on my priority list (Pop/alternative with prog tendencies)

I have problems with both, but the music is definitely in the forefront; after all, if the end result (AKA music) was really good, I could easily overlook all the problems they had making the album, as is the case of Awake and Scenes, for example.

ADTOE is my first DT, actually I haven't heard any of their previous albums ... This will change, I'm trying to decide if Score would be the best one to continue ... But back to ADTOE: I strongly feel that it's best 2011 album. There's still few I haven't heard yet, I hope Santa will bring me new Haken and Agents Of Mercy ...

For me hearing Train of Thoughts is like hearing DT covering Metallica and that IS NOT better that A Dramatic, no way.

DT covering Metallica?? Really! Come on maaaann u can come up with a better arguement than using Metallica...the only song King Hetfield and crew come close to prog metal is One...which is a great song...after that Metallica is all pop metal, they bailed on thrash metal after the black album.
..........A Dramatic Turn of Events I think failed at what DT should have tried to do with regards to their situation these past 6 months. There are some very good songs on it, there are some very boring songs on it. Boring because IMO they tried to hard to reach that melodic symph prog metal sound.

It's a more nu metal/metallica-oriented album (in As I Am JLB sings like Hetfield ). They said many times that they take inspiration from Metallica, and ToT shows this thing more than others... As a 80s metal fan (and post-Black Album Metallica is not included), I don't say it's crap, but simply I don't like it.
