Word. I'll give it to the tenor if only for Coltrane and Sanders. |

Tenor, because it is Coltrane's main instrument, the main solo horn of his most orgasmic albums.
Soprano gets an honorable mention thanks to My Favorite Things and the Village Vanguard recordings. But they all can be amazing in the right hands, just as they can be awful (Kenny G anyone?). Edited by The Miracle - November 26 2011 at 21:45 |

Is it me, or the alto saxophone usually sounds very light on record, could never really get into it. I mean, the whole Time Out record wouldn't be the same if it were a tenor, but still, it sounds weird at times for me hearing that very thin sound of the alto.
And yes, the soprano rules when used well. My Favorite Things is just incredible.

Having played alto, baritone, and soprano sax, it's a hard call for me. There's something I love about each of them. Soprano is very difficult to keep in tune, but you can bend the pitch all over the place to make it extremely expressive. On the other side of the spectrum, bari is more difficult to bend pitch but it grooves. I don't know why I've never tried tenor.

Can't tell, but soprano saxophone is one of the most annoying instruments ever if played much out of tune, second only to piccolo. (Still like saxes though, even if they are nothing compared to woodwinds )

I've played alto, tenor and baritone in the past, and baritone's my favorite to play and favorite to listen to.
